After a couple of years of it being so dry and having to contend with drought conditions it seems like we ought to be caught up with our water. We started the month with a chapter ride to the Asheboro Open House put on by Chapter G High Point. The new North Carolina Motorcycle Drill Team put on a fine performance. These guys looked like they been together for years but actually only been together for months. They will represent our state well in all their competitions. It s time to sign up to work Wings Over the Smokies. I ll be passing around a sign-up sheet to collect your shirt size. It won t be long before its rally time again! As I write this months article Memorial Day is coming to an end. This means summer has un-officially started. I hope this year everyone has a safe and happy summer with lots of trips and adventures. RIDER EDUCATION I'm writing this article from St Augustine Florida we have been on the road for 10 days and we've been rained on every day so as you can guess my article will be about riding in the rain. When it starts to rain and you are on your bike the first thing that happens is you get wet. (No DAAAAAA) You stop somewhere safe and put on your rain suit. This isn't a simple task some times, so make sure when you buy a rain suit that it fits easily over your boots. The next thing you must worry about is traction or the lack of it. Your movements should be slow and smooth, minimize you lean angles and give yourself more room to stop. Your space cushion should get larger as well, increase your following distance. Make yourself as visible as possible because the rain will try to hide you from the cars around you. Riding in the rain sucks, as we all know, but with these few simple tips it won't end your trip.. As always Ride Safe Gerry The Tech Guy After researching what brand of tires to replace the Michelin Pilot GT s on my GL1500, I narrowed it down to another set of Pilot GT s or trying the Elite III s by Dunlop. The Pilot s only negative was that they sang like a banshee! Next I pulled my records and found that the Pilot s gave me 19,242 miles of trouble free service! That is mostly Two Up with a trailer. Of course I try to keep check on the pressures As I was scribbling this Tech Tip I ran across this thread on the message board. I inserted this part as I had the exact same experience described here! Anyone needing tires please read over this. Thanks Tim Pennington From what I have been reading, Metzler's have been experiencing more than tread separations recently. They have been problems with the tread separating and leaving the tire altogether. Recently there was a three-page article in Wing World from Bruce Johnson about his run in with the Metzler ME 880 bias ply tires on his GL1500. It is an excellent article including pictures of the failed rear tire. This is in the December 2008 Issue of Wing World magazine, pages 56 through 58 and it is available online at http://www.wingworldmag.com/. The title of the article is Rescued in Iowa: Everything that is right about GWRRA. A few months prior to this article appearing in the Wing World magazine, one of our chapter members experienced an identical failure on the rear Metzler ME 880 of his 90 GL1500. At that time he thought it was a fluke and had a new set of ME880's mounted on his '90 GL1500. Since reading this article and then having the same problem with his ME880 s, he has now removed the ME880 s from his GL1500. His son has an '87 GL1200 Aspencade and he too experienced the separation and loss of tread in two different places on the rear tire of his Metzler ME880. This happened only a few weeks ago. A call was made to Metzler in an attempt to see if they were aware of the problem and/or make them that there is a continuing problem. The individual at Metzler who answered the call only said that if he had a problem to report it to the NHTSA if he felt like it and gave him the number to call. So, he did and left a message. A Mr. Mark Swanson, Safety Defense Investigator with the National Highway Safety Administration, returned his call. Pictures of the failed tires have been sent to Mr. Swanson along. Also, Mr. Swanson has sent a prepaid return shipping authorization for the tire carcass. This most recent defective tire will be shipped to them this week. He said that if anyone else had issues with these tires that he wanted to hear about it. His email is mark.swanson@dot.gov. His phone number is 202-366-7020

Chapter A2 COUPLE OF THE YEAR Bill & Deidre Sprinkle Greetings from your Chapter Couple. We do not have much to report this month. We continue to work on our upcoming Golf Tournament. Please remember Chapter A Greensboro s Yard Sale on June 6, 2009. All proceeds will go to help Christine. We participated in the Road Captain s Course on May 16, at Tom Fitzgerald s home. After the book part, we were divided into 3 groups and took a nice 40 mile drive around Forsyth County. We continue to do well with our can food donations to the Senior Pantry in Lexington and we want to thank everyone who has donated items for our Christine raffle at the meetings. Everyone has been so generous, and it is greatly appreciated. Do not forget our Care Bear ride on June 27, followed by fun at the Lake. I will have printed directions at the meeting if anyone needs them. Also, make Ride for Angels Hospice Ride. July 18. Rain date is July 19,. It was a big success last year and they are hoping for greater things this year. Until next time, Ride Safe.
