ONBOARD INFORMATION OCEAN DIAMOND

Dear Guests, Your voyage with OCEAN DIAMOND is starting soon! Look forward to an extraordinary cruise with a maximum of travel comfort and full of unforgettable impressions! This document contains helpful information about life onboard. Our experienced expedition team will be happy to assist you during the whole voyage. We look forward to welcoming you onboard! Best regards, Your Iceland ProCruises Team 2 3

Good to know! Iceland Land and its people Language Time difference Iceland fascinates with diversity. There are just not many places on earth where you can find black-sand beaches, erupting volcanoes, lumbering glaciers and thunderous waterfalls while at the same time swimming in hot springs, betting on when geysers will erupt, and hiking across barren rocky deserts or across regions with a fascinating diversity of moss, lichen and shrubs. The inhabited coast regions form the smallest part of the island. 11 % of Iceland s surface is covered by glaciers while 60 % of the whole country is dominated by uninhabited highlands or deserts. These desolate regions can only be crossed by 4-wheel-drive during summer. The volcanic island offers lots of space for its inhabitants. Approx. 320.000 inhabitants live on 103.000 km². Approx. two thirds of Iceland s population lives in the capital Reykjavik, in the southwest. The peninsula Reykjanes is home to the international airport Keflavik, about 45 km from the capital. Iceland is also famous for its hospitality, which visitors can experience throughout the country. Climate Although the warm Gulf Stream has a positive effect on the climate, you have to be ready for all kinds of weather in general. In summer temperatures vary around 12-15 Celsius, though they may go as high as 20 C. Rain showers are always possible, even if they do not last long. During the year, Reykjavik s average rainfall is less than that in Munich for example. Temperatures in winter are around +/- 5 C; even though it can be very windy, it is not as cold as generally assumed. Currency The currency used in Iceland is the Icelandic Krone ( krona ), ISK. The homepage of the Icelandic National Bank (www.cb.is) informs permanently about current exchange rates. Widely used are also the Euro/MasterCard and Visa credit cards. Important: Several shops, restaurants and especially gas stations also request the PIN of the credit card, since this is necessary to complete the payment. In larger towns and airports it is easily possible to get cash through EC cash machines. Opening hours Banks are open from Monday to Friday between 9.15 and 16.00. In general shops are open Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 18.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 14.00. Some souvenir shops are also open on Sundays. Tourist information in Reykjavik is open daily from 8.30 to 19.00 (01.06 15.09). Between 16.09 and 31.05 it is open on week days from 9.00 to 18.00 and on the weekend from 10.00 to 14.00. The official language is Islandic. The roots of this old language go back into the era of Norwegian Vikings. English and Danish are nowadays very common as well. Some inhabitants also speak German. Iceland belongs to the time zone of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). 4 5

Good to know! Greenland Land and its people Climate Language Time difference Greenland, autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, is home to approximately 56.000 people. With an impressive surface of von 2.166.086 km² Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world and the world largest island at the same time. While the northern corner of the island is located only 730 km south of the North Pole, the South of Greenland lies on the same latitude as Oslo. With several climate zones Greenland offers both a diversity of sceneries and a variety of wildlife. Majestic whales, mosque oxen and ice bears are only some examples of animal species with habitat in this region. Living up to its name, southern Greenland is fertile and lush. During the summer, visitors encounter blankets of wildflowers which form a vibrant contrast to the icebergs floating in the nearby fjords and the massive inland ice cap. Over 1,000 years ago, Erik the Red decided to settle here and gave the unknown country its name. Today, many ruins recall the history of those early Norse settlers. Greenland has an Arctic climate, which means that you have to be prepared for sunny days, but also for cold, fresh mornings and evenings. The average temperature reaches a maximum of +10 C / 50 F during the summer months. Nevertheless you might experience days with temperatures of + 15-20 C / 59-68 F. Therefore it is important to bring warm as well as light clothes that you can layer. Currency Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark and uses Danish Kroner, DKK as currency. We strongly advise you to exchange money before arriving in Greenland. Most hotels and many shops accept all major credit cards, but in several places cash will be more useful. ATMs are available in all larger towns. As payment for excursions Arctic Adventure guides accept the following major credit cards; Euro Card, MasterCard, Visa, JCB, Diners and American Express. Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic) became the sole official language. Danish is still widely used in the administration and in higher education, as well as remaining the first or only language for some people in Nuuk and the larger towns. A majority of the population speak both Kalaallisut and Danish. Although in schools of larger communities generally English is taught, inhabitants of small communities mostly do not speak English. In summer the southwest part of Greenland is 2 hours behind GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). The Disko Bay at the west coast is dominated by impressive icebergs in all kinds of different shapes and colors. This everchanging display is a result of large pieces of ice calving (breaking off) from the outer edge of Sermeq Kualleq Glacier and floating through the Ilulissat Ice Fjord into the bay. The rich waters of Disko Bay also attract an array of whales, seabirds and other wildlife. Both the international airport, Kangerlussuaq, and the capital, Nuuk, are located at the west coast of Greenland as well. Nuuk with 16.000 inhabitants is also the biggest city in Greenland. Opening hours In larger towns shops are typically open Monday Thursday 10:00 17:30, Fridays 10:00 18:00 and Saturdays 9:00-13:00. However, many towns have convenience stores that have longer opening hours and which are also open on Sundays. Alcohol cannot be purchased after 13:00 on Saturday and all day on Sunday. 6 7
