On a stroll across the frozen Engadin lakes, you appreciate the vast expanse of the high valley and, especially at sunset, the magical quality of light in the Engadin. The flat winter walking paths from Maloja to Silvaplana and on to St. Moritz are perfect for families depending on snow conditions, with pushchairs, too. For a particularly picturesque winter walk, follow the path from Sils into the romantic Val Fex, or from Maloja through the snow-blanketed forest to the frozen Lake Cavloccio. Those setting their sights higher can follow the Philosophers Trail up on Muottas Muragl. Along this scenic winter walking trail, seats furnished with woollen blankets invite walkers to reflect on the breathtaking beauty of the landscape all around.

Mountain adventure Page 21 Snowshoe treks With snowshoes on your feet, you are free to explore the pristine forests and snow-blanketed plateaus at your own pace a magical adventure for anyone seeking tranquillity and adventure off the beaten track. In recent years, Maloja has made a name for itself among enthusiasts as a paradise for snowshoeing, while Madulain offers an idyllic evening snowshoe trek followed by a fondue dinner in a cosy alpine hut. Snowkiting Snowkiting is like kitesurfing, only on skis or a snowboard. A favourite venue is the frozen Lake Silvaplana, where you glide over the snow pulled by a kite powered by the Maloja wind. Another option is the frozen Lago Bianco up at the Bernina Pass. Ice climbing The ice climbing gorge in Pontresina and the various frozen waterfalls attract experts and novices to the Engadin from far and wide. The Pontresina Mountaineering School offers a range of courses at all levels. Ice sports Every village in the Engadin has an ice rink, where locals and visitors can skate, play ice hockey or hold a curling match. Some are also floodlit and open in the evening. Enthusiasts will particularly enjoy two special experiences: skating on the natural ice of frozen Lake St. Moritz and visiting the Glatschin adventure ice rink by Plazza Rosatsch in St. Moritz Bad. Madulain Ice Path Ice skating enthusiasts will love this beautiful open-air trail through the meadows along the left bank of the Inn. The light effects on the frozen river, views of the historic village heart and the sense of peace in the valley f loor are enchanting. The path is 1,000 metres (1,100 yards) long and begins at the works yard Madulain, where parking is available. AUTHENTIC NATURE

THE ENGADIN A WORLD OF SUBLIME ALPINE BEAUTY. Panoramic view of the Bernina massif from the Diavolezza

Page 26 Authentic nature AUTHENTIC NATURE EXPERIENCE AUTHENTIC NATURE Fairy-tale winter landscape by the River Inn, near Celerina The wonderful climate of the Engadin The Engadin s elevated location, high in the Alps, creates unique weather patterns. Experts refer matter-of-factly to a dry, continental climate. As variations in temperature between day and night are as great as those between summer and winter, conditions for winter sports are superb. The dry cold preserves the freshly fallen snow so that the landscape keeps its white, fairy-tale appearance throughout the winter, and sports enthusiasts enjoy powder conditions rivalled only by those in the Rocky Mountains. All the same, this southerly mountain valley enjoys exceptionally high levels of sunshine.

Authentic nature Page 27 The Engadin lakes In winter, the Engadin lakes freeze over and are covered by a thick blanket of snow, creating a vast white expanse that adds to the sense of boundless freedom of this inspiring high valley. These wide-open spaces offer visitors a beautiful setting for walking, cross-country skiing and snowkiting, and provide a dramatic venue for exclusive events such as the spectacular Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, the original Cricket on Ice, the legendary White Turf horse races and the traditional Engadin Ski Marathon. Sparkling snow crystals The combination of low temperatures, dry air and snow makes everything in the Engadin sparkle. On particularly cold, sunny days, the air appears to be full of millions of tiny diamonds, glittering in the sunlight. Unusual phenomena take place on the ground, too for example, in the Val Trupchun. As the sun rarely reaches the valley floor in winter, snow crystals grow up to 4 centimetres (2 inches) across and glisten magically in the light. National Park Centre, Zernez Explore, discover and learn in a thrilling and creative setting: at the four interactive exhibition areas of the Swiss National Park s visitor centre in Zernez, guests experience the endless and enchanting variety of nature in a completely new way. Further information: www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/ national-park-centre White giants: the glaciers of the Engadin Among the highlights of the magnificent Engadin landscape are the 173 glaciers. Draped majestically around the highest peaks of the Eastern Alps, they extend for more than 40 square km (15 square miles), making up 4 per cent of the region s surface area. Crowning them all is the Morteratsch Glacier at around 6 km (4 miles), the longest in the Engadin. Other glaciers, too with evocative names such as Roseg, Tschierva, Sella and Pers bear witness to the power of nature. Hidden under a winter blanket of snow, however, the ice giants are barely discernible. At most, you can make out the odd crevasse, offering a glimpse of the eerie blue interior. Just as intriguing are the ice caves, created in summer when the relatively warm meltwater makes its way out of the glacier. Exploring the ice giants independently, however, is dangerous; anyone seeking to discover the glaciers secrets is well advised to book an expert guide. Horse-drawn sleigh rides One of the most relaxing and enjoyable experiences on offer in the Engadin is a romantic ride in a horse-drawn sleigh into one of the idyllic side valleys or along the snow-covered frozen lakes. You can arrange rides directly with the sleigh drivers; local tourist information offices provide full details of the various services on offer. Its name is protected as a trademark and stands worldwide for elegance and high class. It was here that winter tourism was invented in 1864, and to this day, no other resort celebrates it in such style. Guests from all over the world enjoy the chic, cosmopolitan ambiance and a unique combination of top-quality restaurants in the resort and on the slopes, hotels that set new standards in luxury in every way, and a packed calendar of top-level international events from World Cup ski races and the Gourmet Festival to the international horse races and the polo tournament on frozen Lake St. Moritz. The shopping is famously seductive, notably along Via Serlas, while close by, guests find all kinds of local specialities such as the delicious Engadin walnut cake. Of course, the quality of winter sports on offer in St. Moritz is also superb from the local mountain, the Corviglia, with its 100 kilometres (62 miles) of pistes, to the legendary Cresta Run and the world s only natural-ice bob run that hosts World Cup races annually. No wonder St. Moritz has been entrusted with staging no fewer than five FIS Alpine World Ski Championships most recently in February 2017 as well as two Olympic Winter Games (in 1928 and 1948).

The high altitude enables further pleasures that elsewhere would be an impossible luxury: from ice climbing on giant icicles to snowkiting on the frozen Lago Bianco and ice skating, curling and ice hockey on natural ice rinks. Afterwards, relax at the Bellavita Pool and Spa or dine at one of the GaultMillau-rated restaurants in the top-quality local hotels with their pine-panelled dining rooms. Add a concert or a play at the Rondo convention and cultural centre, and you have a perfect evening: pure holiday pleasure. Whoever comes to Sils experiences everything more intensely: the peace, the light, the power of nature and happiness. At an altitude of more than 1,802 m, the fresh mountain air invigorates body and soul. Many creative spirits have found inspiration in the boundless sense of space and the magical quality of the light: writers such as Nietzsche and Dürrenmatt, artists such as Beuys and Chagall and musicians such as Strauss, Honegger and David Bowie. All have contributed to Sils global reputation as a cultural hotspot. The broad expanses and tranquillity of the idyllic landscapes have a powerful effect on guests, sporty or otherwise. Visitors soon come into harmony with themselves and with nature as they explore: cross-country skiing over frozen Lake Sils, walking across the sparkling Sils landscape or discovering the slopes of Furtschellas, Sils local mountain. Samedan owes its importance to its location at the heart of the Upper Engadin: the town serves as a hub for the Rhaetian Railway and is also home to a small international airport a prized launch site for glider pilots. The Badrutt family, which went on to write hotel history in St. Moritz, originated here; among many historical features is the magnificent 16 th -century Chesa Planta. The picturesque and buzzing village with its stately traditional Engadin houses may appear idyllic, but the charm is genuine: local people (and two museums) ensure that traditional Engadin culture is very much alive. Visitors can easily reach all parts of the Engadin from here, including the summit of the local mountain, Muottas Muragl, with its stunning panoramic views; the peak is also home to the first plus-energy hotel in the Alps, the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl. Close by, there s winter sports action to suit every taste: at the Survih ski area, the cross-country ski centre and on the thrilling toboggan run. Its charm is hard to resist: visitors encounter nothing but tranquillity and nature. Located in the heart of the high valley of the Engadin, Bever is celebrated for its story-telling traditions indeed, the whole village looks like an open picture book, with its enchanted hideaways, its windows sunk deep into mighty façades, and its natural sculptures of ice hanging from roofs and flights of steps. Overlooking all this is the mighty renovated church spire, piercing the blue sky and with its bells marking the passage of time, which seems to move a little more slowly here than elsewhere. Visitors seeking the ultimate in tranquillity can take the path to Spinas, four kilometres (2.5 miles) away, at the southern portal of the Albula railway tunnel. Or hike along the carefully maintained winter walking trail, set off on cross-country skis along tracks prepared daily, or on snowshoes and venture across the snow-blanketed meadows. Here, the path really is the goal. HISTORIC HOTEL CHESA SALIS This patrician house dating from 1590 once belonged to the noble von Salis family. Terms of contract and conditions of travel Page 81 Terms of contract and conditions of travel This catalogue was compiled by Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG on behalf of the service providers hotels, airlines, etc. listed therein. 01 Scope of these terms of contract and conditions of travel These terms of contract and conditions of travel govern the legal relationship between you and the service provider insofar as your contractual partner does not present terms and conditions at the time of booking. Unless expressly specified otherwise at the time of booking, your contract will be with the companies providing services, even if you place your booking through the Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG. In such cases, the Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG acts merely as an agent between you and the service provider; your contract is direct with the provider of the service booked. 02 Conclusion of contract and services provided Your contract with the service provider becomes legally binding when the booking office unconditionally confirms your booking. If the same booking office arranges other services and packages for you that are not booked from a publication of Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG, these terms of contract and conditions of travel shall not apply. The services provided will be as specified in the booking confirmation and in the details provided of the service on offer. Unless stated otherwise in the product description, your activity will begin at the location specified in the contract. 03 Prices and terms of payment All prices are quoted in Swiss francs and are to be paid in Swiss francs. Unless otherwise agreed in your booking or in the booking confirmation, the price of your trip shall be payable in full upon booking. If the price is not paid in full by the date due, your contractual partner shall be entitled to withhold services, to withdraw from the contract and to demand the cancellation costs listed in paragraph 05. Note that if you book your trip through a different booking office such as a travel agent, this booking office may make additional charges for advice, reservations, etc. 04 Price and programme changes The service providers and Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG are entitled to change the details of services and prices before a contract is signed. You will be informed of this at the time of booking. After the contract has been signed, prices can be increased up to three weeks prior to the beginning of your trip if the transport or accommodation costs, the charges for certain services or the exchange rate have increased. Changes to the programme and scope of services may also arise owing to unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances. Should any of the essential features of your trip change considerably and if you cannot be offered an appropriate alternative, you have the right to cancel your booking. In these circumstances, price increases of more than 10% count as a considerable change. Unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances may necessitate a change of programme even after your trip has commenced. Your service provider will endeavour to provide appropriate alternatives in such cases. The Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation will not refund any services not delivered and accepts no liability for programme changes. 05 Changes or cancellations requested by you If you wish to change your booking or to cancel your trip, you must notify the booking office directly. Any travel documents you have already received must be returned to the booking office at the same time. A service charge of CHF 60. per person, max. CHF 120. per order, will be levied for cancellations and changes (affecting names of travellers, dates, accommodation or additional services, etc.). If you cancel your trip or change your booking (name, date, accommodation, additional services, etc.) less than 31 days prior to departure, you will also be charged, in addition to any processing fee, for the following costs as a percentage of the total cost of your trip: 30 to 15 days before departure 30% of the package price 14 to 8 days before departure 50% of the package price 7 to 1 days before departure 80% of the package price on the day of departure and in the event of no-show 100% of the package price The critical date is that on which the booking office receives notice of your intentions; if that is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the next working day shall apply. 06 Late arrival or early departure of your own accord You are responsible for arriving on time. Should you arrive late, you cannot claim a refund for any services you have missed owing to your late arrival. Should you depart early, your expenses will not be refunded. 07 Early departure or exclusion occasioned by the service provider The service provider is entitled to end the service/trip prematurely in the event of unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances that would render fulfilment of contract impossible, considerably more difficult or dangerous for those taking part. If no alternative is possible, the service provider shall be exempted from its obligation to fulfil the contract. Your claim to a refund in such cases shall be limited to unjust enrichment. The service provider can exclude participants from the trip if their actions or omissions justify such a step. In such a case, the cost of the package shall still be due in full and there shall be no refund for services not received. Any claims for compensation are excluded. 08 Liability Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG and the service providers accept no liability, to the extent provided for by law, for slight negligence on their own part or that of their agents. No liability is accepted for loss or damage to valuables, cameras/camcorders etc., fur coats or other expensive items of clothing, mobile phones, credit cards, cash and other valuable objects or for unlawful use of the same. For packages, liability for anything other than personal injury shall be limited to twice the cost of the package. The limitations to liability specified in paragraphs 04 to 07 also apply. 09 Travel insurance Participants are strongly advised to take out travel insurance to provide cover for cancellation or early departure, incl. accident or sickness. 10 Applicable law and jurisdiction The contract between you and the service providers or Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG is governed exclusively by Swiss law. Exclusive place of jurisdiction for any disputes arising will be St. Moritz, Switzerland.
