Nowhere else on earth can you spot so many species so easily and in such close proximity as in Kenya and Tanzania, both renowned for their incredible diversity of animal life. Follow migratory herds of elephants and wildebeests, observe the antics of playful monkeys, marvel at the majesty of lion prides and watch gangly giraffes nibbling from acacia trees all from the comfort of our four-wheeldrive vehicles with guaranteed window seating. Providing us with her insights on biodiversity and human evolution is Stanford environmental biologist Elizabeth Hadly. Join us for this ultimate experience and check the Big Five off your animal life list! Brett S. Thompson, 83, Director, Stanford Travel/Study Highlights VISIT a Masai boma (settlement) and learn about a way of life that has endured in Kenya and Tanzania for centuries. SAVOR the delights of our deluxe tented camps and safari lodges, built to have minimal impact on the environment while providing a close-up view of nature. SEARCH for the Big Five elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard on thrilling game drives in the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

Lake Victoria MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE Nairobi K ENYA T ANZANIA SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Ngorongoro Crater NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA Arusha Kiliman Airport Itinerary SUNDAY & MONDAY, AUGUST 9 & 10 DEPART U.S. / NAIROBI, KENYA Depart the U. S. on overnight flights to Nairobi, arriving on Monday. Meet our local guide and transfer to our hotel for a well-earned rest. Gather Monday evening for a welcome reception at our hotel. FAIRMONT THE NORFOLK TUESDAY, AUGUST 11 NAIROBI / MASAI MARA national RESERVE After breakfast and a briefing, join our local guides for a driving tour of Nairobi. Stop at the Nairobi National Museum and explore the many exhibits, including those on human evolution. Continue beyond the city to the Karen Blixen Museum, located at the foot of the Ngong Hills and once the farm where the Danish author (aka Isak Dinesen) of the famed memoir, Out of Africa, lived and ran her coffee plantation. Tour the estate, now a museum, and get a glimpse of colonial life at the turn of the 20th century. Fly to the Masai Mara and transfer to our deluxe tented camp. KICHWA TEMBO TENTED CAMP (B,L,D) WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY, AUGUST 12 & 13 MASAI MARA national RESERVE Enjoy two full days of wildlife viewing in this vast, 600-square-mile game reserve in southwest Kenya, unique for its large concentration of migratory and resident species of game, including a burgeoning population of big cats. Rise at dawn for early-morning game drives in search of giraffe, buffalo, elephant, zebra and lion in the lush grasslands of the Mara and witness thousands of wildebeest in search of water and fresh grazing on their annual migration. In the late afternoons, choose a second game drive or relax in the tents of our deluxe camp with its sweeping views of the Mara and the Sabaringo River. KICHWA TEMBO TENTED CAMP (B,L,D BOTH DAYS) FRIDAY, AUGUST 14 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA After breakfast in camp, transfer to the airstrip for our flight to Migori, from where we drive across the border to Tarime, Tanzania. Then fly to the grassy plains of the vast Serengeti, which covers an area of 6,000 square miles. The terrain consists of grassy savannahs, kopjes (or small rock outcrops), woodlands and forests all of which provide a receptive environment for the many species of mammals and birds that abound in this area. Enjoy wildlife viewing en route to our deluxe lodge. SERENGETI SAFARI LODGE (B,L,D) SATURDAY & SUNDAY, AUGUST 15 & 16 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Spend two days observing the vast array of animals in this natural paradise and World Heritage site. Thomson s and Grant s gazelles and impalas are likely to be spotted, along with lions, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, ostriches and

jaro warthogs. Take daily drives throughout the park and, in the evenings, admire the stunning views of the vast Serengeti Plain from the vantage point of our lodge. SERENGETI SAFARI LODGE (B,L,D BOTH DAYS) MONDAY, AUGUST 17 NGORONGORO CRATER Enjoy a final safari in the Serengeti en route to the airstrip, where we board our flight for Ngorongoro. As we transfer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, we pay a visit to a Masai boma (settlement) and learn about a way of life that has endured here for centuries. The semi-nomadic Masai, among the best-known of Africa s ethnic groups due to their unique customs and distinctive bright blue-and-red attire, are the only people permitted to live within the area s boundaries. Continue to the edge of Ngorongoro Crater and arrive at our deluxe lodge, perched spectacularly on the crater rim. NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI LODGE (B,L,D) TUESDAY, AUGUST 18 NGORONGORO CRATER The world s largest intact caldera provides breathtaking views of animals in their natural element. Drive into the crater to spend a full day exploring its vast floor, which teems with wildlife. More than 30,000 animals inhabit this area, including black rhino, cheetah, monkey, hyena, eland and antelope. Look for hippopotamuses wallowing in shallow pools, ostriches running across the savannah, and if we re lucky, some or all of Africa s Big Five African buffalo, leopard, elephant, lion and rhinoceros. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the caldera. Return to our lodge on the crater s rim and gather for a festive farewell reception and dinner. NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI LODGE (B,L,D) WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19 NGORONGORO / ARUSHA Drive back to Arusha, stopping en route for lunch at Gibb s Farm. Check into individual dayrooms at our hotel in Arusha before transferring to the Kilimanjaro Airport for flight departures this evening. Faculty Leader Liz Hadly was fantastic the best faculty leader among the SAA trips I ve been on. Randy Livingston, 75, MBA 79, Kenya Wildlife Safari, 2012 ELIZABETH HADLY first became interested in her field of environmental biology after spending time at the Smithsonian Institution and exploring the wild lands of the American West as a child. She is especially interested in the role that environmental change exerts on biodiversity in mammals. Her travels to Africa found her focusing on the interplay between the history of the African biota and the role that climate has played in the evolution of humans: past, present and future. I am thrilled to visit Africa again, explains Professor Hadly, to interact with the African people and to immerse myself in the ecosystems there. Nothing is better than a safari, looking out for animals while bouncing down a dirt track with newly made friends. During our program, Professor Hadly s lectures will address the unique history of the African continent and our place in it; the evolution of African biodiversity, with a particular focus on East Africa; and the future of this precious resource in a changing landscape. Professor Hadly has led previous Travel/Study programs to Mt. Kilimanjaro, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia and Botswana.
