For nearly 450 years (1358 to 1806), Dubrovnik remained the only independent city along the Dalmatian Coast and once rivaled Venice in art, wealth and naval capabilities. The city s historic quarters remain an impressive representation of a medieval city and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. After Rome s Colosseum, today it is arguably the finest and most intact Roman amphitheater in the world.
