Brimming with history and packed full of small independent shops, it s been at the heart of the beautiful lower Wharfe Valley for many centuries. Surrounded by spectacular countryside that provides amazing walking and cycling opportunities for visitors, Otley sits proudly on the banks of the river Wharfe and at the foot of the famous Otley Chevin. But don t worry if you prefer your entertainment a little more sedate. Because in addition to the town s numerous annual events and festivals, there s plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes where good food and drink is always on the menu. 2 3

Countryside, Walks & Cycling Walking is a great way to experience the Wharfe Valley countryside and an excellent network of footpaths provides everything from a short stroll to a full day s walk. The town of Otley lies in lower Wharfedale at a bridging point of the River Wharfe, surrounded by stunning countryside and fantastic views. Picturesque Wharfemeadows Park lies alongside the river, where a torrent of water rushes over the weir. It s a great place for families, with a large children s play area, skate park, tennis courts and outdoor gym. To the south, the Otley Chevin was the inspiration behind a number of Turner paintings and is worthy of attention for its stunning beauty and picturesque setting. Well worth the walk to its summit, the Chevin Forest Park provides breathtaking views of the surrounding area and is one of the must-see attractions of Otley. Significant areas of interest also lie to both the east and west of the town. To the east, the Gallows Hill Nature Area is home to a variety of birds, insects and amphibian species and Knotford Nook is a noted birdwatching site. To the west, the former flooded gravel pits are now devoted to angling and sailing. To the north, you ll discover the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its stunning moorland countryside, lush green meadows and beautiful river scenery. The many wonderful marked trails, from the Chevin Forest Park to the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, together with the riverside walks and the Six Dales Trail, means the active visitor really is spoilt for choice. In fact, the town hosts its own Walking Festival in June catering for all ages and abilities. See www.waw-otley. org.uk for more details. Not surprisingly, there are also many popular cycling routes to discover from Otley. Linked to several national cycling routes and visited by the Tour de France in 2014, the town is a popular destination for both road cyclists and mountain bikers. History Otley has a long and distinguished history dating back to at least Anglo-Saxon times. An historic market town, markets have been held here since the granting of a Royal Charter in 1222. Today, cattle markets are still held in the town, with traditional markets on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Much of the town centre is eighteenth and nineteenth century and is designated as a Conservation Area. What s more, the Parish Church houses some of the best examples of Anglo-Danish crosses in the country. The world-famous cabinet maker, Thomas Chippendale, was born right here in Otley. His statue stands outside the old grammar school and examples of his work can be found in nearby Temple Newsam House and Nostell Priory. The artist J.M.W Turner often stayed in nearby Farnley Hall and used the Otley Chevin as the backdrop for some of his most famous paintings. And the Wharfedale Press, which revolutionised nineteenth century printing, was invented and manufactured in Otley. The town is home to the country s oldest agricultural show and has also been a popular location for TV and film crews down the years. Heartbeat, DCI Banks and A Touch of Frost have all used Otley for filming and in the ITV soap, Emmerdale, Otley doubles as the town of Hotten. The rich and varied heritage of Otley is commemorated by a number of plaques and guided walks around the town, celebrating key people, historical events, significant buildings and important industries. 6 7
