We are delighted to work with Exeter City Council on the launch of the city s own local currency, the Exeter Pound. The Exeter Pound will help to keep spending in Exeter, promoting jobs and incomes in the local area and will contribute to the growth of vibrant, sustainable and resilient businesses. A joined up local economy can better serve local needs using local skills and better survive fluctuations in the national and global economic system. The Exeter Pound will build the community in the city between people who live or work in Exeter and local businesses and charities. For visitors to the city each note will be an invitation to explore the character that independent traders add to the city. The Exeter Pound note designs literally reflect some of Exeter s outstanding achievements and buildings a city we can all be proud of. - Gill Westcott, Chair of the Exeter Pound Board The Exeter Pound is a local currency that is equal in value to sterling. The difference is that by spending an Exeter Pound, you are encouraging local trade and therefore contributing to a more resilient local economy. Your Exeter Pounds can be spent in many businesses across Exeter, all of which are independent and local (full eligibility criteria can be found in the scheme rules). The businesses shown in this Guide signed up shortly before the currency launched in September 2015, but businesses are signing up all the time, and all of these can be found in our online directory and will be published in next year s guide. Why use the EXETER POUND How to use the How to use the EXETER POUND The Exeter Pound is a simple and fun new way to explore rich, local trade communities in Exeter. This is a city that has, at its heart, a symphony of shops that are run by local people. Swap your sterling for this local currency at one of the exchange points in the city and, using this handy guide, set out to discover all that Exeter has to offer. 1 Change s to Exeter Pounds at your local exchange point 1:1 The Exeter Pound is an invitation to adventure! But the Exeter Pound is far more than just a novelty - it challenges people to think about the power of money. By using Exeter Pounds you give yourself the power to choose where you want your hard-earned money to go! For every 1 spent in a chain shop, 35p is re-spent in the local economy. The rest swiftly leaves the city But for every E1 spent in a local business, E1.73 is generated!* This is through the multiplier effect: the trader accepting your Exeter Pounds will pass it on to their suppliers, employees or customers. They, in turn, pass it on again, and so on, strengthening the local economy. The scheme is not only Exeter-centric. ExeterPound.org.uk In January 2015, following the design of the Exeter Pound logo by Exeter College student, Lily Bedingham, the people of Exeter were invited to help design the paper Exeter Pounds with a competition to find eight artworks to be used on each side of the E1, E5, E10 and E20 notes. Professional designers, photographers, amateur artists and an array of primary school children all rose to the challenge and the mixed panel of independent judges had a tough job of selecting the final few. Exeter Pound have also created a limited edition E15 note to celebrate the Rugby World Cup coming to our city, featuring Exeter Chiefs and England star Jack Nowell. NB This note will only be in circulation until 31st December 2015. With the help of local graphic designer Si Paull of Sound in Theory, the winning images have been incorporated with a number of security features to produce a set of paper Exeter Pounds the city can be proud of. Each of the designs captures something of Exeter s character, celebrating its cultural and sporting heritage, its creative spirit and thriving music scene. A full set of notes with the serial number 0000001 will be housed at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum for posterity. You can read the full story behind each note at ExeterPound.org.uk 6 7
