ARNO BAY CLEVE DARKE PEAK Cleve & districts Discover the Heart of Eyre Peninsula Cleve Rich in heritage, Cleve is a regional service town for the surrounding Eastern Eyre Peninsula. Primary industries in the area are agriculture, especially broad acre farming with wheat, barley, canola, pea and sheep production being prominent. Cleve Town was proclaimed on 5th March 1879. The District Council was established in 1911. Cleve in old English means cliff or hill. District population is approximately 1,790. Events Biennial Eyre Peninsula Field Days Christmas Pageant/Festival Australia Day Breakfast Annual Cleve Show Junior Football/Netball Carnival at Mangalo Attractions Yeldulknie Weir & Reservoir District Map E4 The weir and reservoir completed in 1912, supplied water to the districts of Arno Bay and Cowell but not Cleve. It is an historic and beautiful area with picnic and BBQ facilities and walking trails. The restored wheelhouse is state heritage listed. Wangaraleednie District Map F4 Consists of a monument, grave sites, historical machinery items. Has gravel road access. Wangaraleednie is an Aboriginal name, said to mean place of the west wind. It was first settled 1853 by the McKechnie brothers, who established a sheep run. The brothers lived in the area until 1869. The chimney of McKechnie Bros original cottage, built after 1853, stands within sight of the grave headstones. There are some historic machinery items and a monument which celebrate 150 years and the McKechnie descendents, in 2003.

Mt Millar Wind Farm District Map F4 Eyre Peninsula s largest wind farm with 35 turbines aligns the hilltops was constructed in 2005 at a cost of $138 millon. At the public viewing area you will see the enormous two megawatt wind turbines with a blade diameter of 71 metres atop an 85 metre tall tower - a total height of 120 metres! Mt Millar wind farm will reduce Australia s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 168,000 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent per year. Gravel road access with steep inclines. Not suitable for caravan access. Further information: www.meridianenergy.com.au May Gibbs MBE Commemorative monument to the author of the gumnut babies Snuggle Pot & Cuddle Pie. May Gibbs spent her childhood in this area around the 1880 s and influenced many books with her famous gumnut babies. Birdseye Highway near Cowell. Cleve Hills Scenic Drive and Lookout Highlighted on District Map E4. Sealed and gravel road. In and Around Cleve Ticklebelly Hill Cleve Map E1 Observation Hill is known locally as Ticklebelly Hill. The small, diverse remnant patch of scrub provides an important habitat for a number of plant species including the threatened Silver Leaf Daisy (oleria pannosa ssp pannosa). There are over 60 Silver Leaf Daisy plants within the reserve. Observation Hill was used as an enemy aircraft spotting post during World War II and was manned 24 hours per day. Centenary Park & Town Map Cleve Map C2 The Park is maintained by the local Lions Club. Historic agricultural implements are located in the park including the first council grader and the first Cleve street light. Facilities include BBQ, toilets, playground, historic display. Recreational Vehicle Friendly Parking Area Cleve Map C2 Located inside the Cleve Show Society grounds. Fee applies, honesty system. National Trust Agricultural & Folk Museum Cleve Map E2 The Cleve Branch is based in the original Council Chambers built in 1913 and includes the original Cleve gaol cell and a large display shed. Further information: Phone 08 8628 2038 or 08 8628 2023. Wall Mural Cleve Map E2 Centenary of Federation Mural painted during 2001, depicts the district s agricultural heritage. Main Street, Cleve. Tile Mosaic at RSL Hall Cleve Map D2 This public artwork, named Ballgowns & Ballgames, was completed by Year 10 Cleve Area School students in 2005 and depicts our youth s interpretation of local history and culture. Birdseye Bus Stop Cleve Map D2 A community artwork completed in 2011 with the Cleve Area School Year 10 students and Cleve Districts Tourism and Development Group. Artists: Diane Turner and local artist, Merridy Briese Birdseye Bus Stop is a historical artwork feature about Sylvia Birdseye and Birdseye Transport using clay tiles, signs and mosaic table. Making a stand out feature on the side of the Cleve District Hall. Tile Mosaic Eyre Montage Cleve Map D2 Represents our district industry, flora and coast with the family making our community. Items of Interest Eyre Peninsula Field Days Ag & Cultural Experience Cleve Map A2 The Field Days were first held in 1972 and have grown to a three day event held every two years, in the second week of August, usually attracting up to 25,000 visitors who come to inspect, socialize and experience with 700 exhibitors from all over Australia. The exhibitors showcase agriculture, lifestyle, artyculture and EP Farmer & Fishermen s Market. It provides a colourful Ag & Cultural Experience for the whole family. Further information: www.eyrepeninsulafielddays.com.au Sims Farm Dingle Dell District Map E4 Some 405 hectares was bequeathed by Mr Gordon Sims to the SA Government in 1960 for research and educational purposes. The farm is now used by the Cleve Area School to train students in agricultural courses, which has proven to be very successful. State Heritage listed. Further information: Phone 8628 2104 or www.cleveas.sa.edu.au Agricultural Information With only 9% of the State s farmers, the Eyre Peninsula produces 40% of South Australia s grain harvest. The average acreage of each farm is much larger than those in other parts of the State. There have been many innovative farmers and engineers ensuring farming is maintained for the future generations. Monuments Recognising First Wheat Crop District Map D4 and Goyder s Line These plaques recognise the first wheat crop grown in the district in 1879 and Goyder s Line, which indicates a climate benchmark, first identified for South Australian farmers in the 1860 s. Sporting & Town Facilities Cleve Golf Club - An attractive 18 hole all-season golf course along the Poornamookinnie Creek near the town centre. Cleve Sporting Bodies Inc. - Coin operated lights at tennis/netball/ basketball courts. Grounds include a community fitness gym, grass oval, cricket nets, skate park and playground. Rudall - on the Birdseye Highway Town proclaimed 4th June 1914. Hundred of Rudall proclaimed on 3rd February 1910. Named after Samuel Bruce Rudall, M.P. (1906-1915). In 1998, South Australian Co-operative Bulk Handling (now Viterra) invested in the new grain receival terminal. Rudall Sporting Complex facilities include licensed clubrooms, netball and tennis courts with a grass oval. Kielpa Aboriginal for short distance in the hundred of Smeaton. Railway siding, former town. Birdseye Highway Australia s newest named highway, traversing east to west from Cowell - Cleve - Lock - Elliston. The highway was named after Mrs Sylvia Birdseye in honour of Birdseye Passenger and Freight Service in the 1920 s-1960 s. Her intrepid adventures on difficult roads, mechanical skill and endurance made her a legendary character. Sea SA Ferry Located at Lucky Bay 12 kms north of Cowell. Darke Peak Darke Peak is home to Caralue Bluff, Darke Range and Carappee Conservation Park with Carappee Hill being the highest point on Eyre Peninsula. Darke Peak township was originally proclaimed Carappee in 1914. The township population is approximately 50, and the nearby range was renamed in 1940 after John Charles Darke. It is an excellent cereal and sheep farming district, and is located on the railway line to Port Lincoln. At one time it recorded the highest SA beer consumption per population ratio! Attractions Darke Peak Ranges A remarkable table-topped picturesque 10km range. Darke Peak Range Scenic Drive Highlighted on District Map E4. Darke s Grave District Map C2 Darke s grave and monument still stands as a memorial to the first European who explored the area in 1844. Darke was speared by Aborigines near Waddikee Rocks on 23rd October 1844. In 1910 a ten foot high marble obelisk was erected over the grave. Signage gives an overview of the explorer s life and death. Minerals on Eyre District Map D2 Over 2400 specimens of minerals and fossils have been collected over 20 years. Federation Lookout District Map C3 Opened in 2001 and accessed through private property, it offers a great view of the surrounding farming district. Carappee Hill Scenic Drive Highlighted on District Map C2. Carappee Hill Conservation Park District Map C2 Highest point on Eyre Peninsula and the 2nd largest monolith in South Australia. Most extensive and highest exposed granite rock, 495 metres above sea level. Carappee is believed to mean a place of water. Carappee was dedicated a conservation park in 1973, covering 920 hectares. Offers a camping ground with bush trails and toilets. Facilities Visitor information is available at The Peak Stop shelter, Hellbent Hotel and Darke Peak Hotel. Sporting facilities include tennis and netball courts, oval, BBQ, playground, swimming pool and a golf course/ clubrooms. A children s playcentre is near the sporting grounds. Items of Interest Hambidge Conservation Park District Map A2 There are more conservation parks in this small area than anywhere else in South Australia, all forming the transition zone of east meeting west in vegetation types. Arno Bay Arno Bay has a population of 220 and is situated between Port Lincoln and Whyalla, 26km from Cleve. Arno Bay began as a shipping port servicing the local farming districts. The jetty was built in 1882 and the old beacon and the super shed stand as a reminder of this era. The town was proclaimed in 1883 under the name of Bligh and changed in 1940 to Arno Bay. Before building the jetty, ketches anchored in the bay. Seamen would row ashore and light a signal fire. Seeing the smoke another fire was lit at Ranford Hill (near Cleve). Smoke on the hill told the local farmers a boat was in the bay. The Post Boy was a regular visitor to Arno Bay, until she was driven ashore and lost in 1905. Her figurehead is on display at the South Australian Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide. There are claims bones of the Post Boy lay buried in the sands 200 metres north of the jetty. The shipping port changed when the bulk silos were built in 1963. Events Arno Bay New Years Day Celebrations - held every year in Turnbull Park celebrated 100 years in 2011. Arno Bay Yachting Competition - season extends from October until Easter. Arno Bay Dirt Circuit - held every 3rd Sunday of the month from February - October. Some night racing. Phone 08 8628 0115. Attractions Arno Bay Welcome Wall Arno Bay Map B3 The wall is made of local stone with old jetty planks, 140 red rose bushes featuring a life size cement dolphin made by local Cliff Kerrison, with the assistance of the Progress Association in 2000. Wall Mural Arno Bay Map C3 Painted in 2002 by community members highlighting an historic Port. Turnbull Park / Jetty Reserve On-The-Foreshore Arno Bay Map D5 BBQ and picnic facilities, public toilets and change rooms, shelter shed, playground, jetty and swimming platforms, car park. Recently reconstrucrted / redesigned. The Super Shed Arno Bay Map D5 This community shelter is located in Turnbull Park. The Super Shed is evidence of the busy seaport days and used for community events. Centenary Park Arno Bay Map D5 Established to commemorate the Centenary of South Australia. Old laundry mural was painted in 1995. Arno Bay Estuary Boardwalk Arno Bay Map C5 The boardwalk is designed to showcase the diverse and pristine beauty of the Arno Bay estuary and winds through dense mangroves, mudflats and samphire with grass habitats over small tributaries alongside the main estuary waterway. Stage 2 has extended the boardwalk 700 metres to the coast line. Offers safe swimming area, recreational fishing, wheelchair access, picnic and BBQ facilities, public toilets. Winner of Outstanding Environmental Tourism Project award Tourism Eyre Peninsula 2005. Winner SA Great Award 2005. SA Community Achievement Award Environment and Sustainability 2010 and recipient of many other awards. Redbanks Arno Bay Map G2 This unique area is designated as a geological monument by the Geological Society of Australia. Great fishing spot with pristine beach. Aquaculture Clean Seas Tuna Ltd Clean Seas Tuna Ltd is an innovative South Australian aquaculture enterprise, which operates from a 40 hectare site at Arno Bay. It s core business is the propagation of environmentally friendly, commercially bred Southern Bluefin Tuna, Yellowtail Kingfish and Mulloway. The hatchery produces finfish fingerlings which are grown-out in off-shore cages. The site is a restricted site and is not open to the public. Arno Bay Sporting Association - includes grass oval, netball & tennis courts with coin operated lights, playground and two squash courts. Wharminda Aboriginal word that means weak water. In 1911-12, the railway dam at Wharminda was constructed to supply the steam trains with water for the railway which opened 1913. Memorial Hall, Country Fire Station Brigade, railway siding and Viterra silos remain at Wharminda. Wharminda Soaks This area was used by the Aborigines prior to white settlement and adjoins the Hincks Reserve. Bush walks, toilets. 4WD access. Hincks Conservation Park Area of 163,315 acres of mallee scrub with species of native plants and animals, reptiles and birds recorded. Verran The Hundred of Verran was proclaimed in 1908, named after the Hon. John Verran, Member of Parliament. The town of Verran was proclaimed in 1914 and in 1970 it was declared to cease to exist.
