STUDY LEADER The faculty study leader for this program is yet to be confirmed. We intend, however, that you will be joined by a Harvard lecturer who will enhance your travel experience. You will discover that our lecturers are not only first-rate scholars and teachers but also friendly traveling companions, eager to share their insights through conversation as well as scheduled presentations. FAMILY ADVENTURE IN THE GALÁPAGOS ON SANTA CRUZ II July 19 26, 2016 TRIP OVERVIEW Sea Lion Create lasting memories for your family this summer in the Galápagos Islands! This wonderful journey will feature delightful nature walks, exotic birds on beautiful beaches, snorkeling with sea lions, kayaking, child-friendly activities, and fascinating science lectures. On these legendary islands 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, lies the rich abundance of wildlife that inspired Charles Darwin to formulate his theory of natural selection. Widely considered the world s most important center for the study of evolution, the Galápagos are home to a unique variety of flora and fauna. Among the spectacular geology of these rugged volcanic islands, we ll observe giant Galápagos Tortoises, Darwin s finches, Galápagos penguins, flocks of frigatebirds and Blue-footed Boobies, colonies of marine iguanas and sea lions, and sea turtles and other fascinating sea life. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to witness animals found nowhere else on our planet. Your home among the islands will be the newly renovated Santa Cruz II, a versatile 235-foot expedition vessel with spacious cabins and five decks. A staff of resident naturalists will be on hand to point out unusual wildlife behavior and characteristics unfolding before your eyes. Throughout the voyage, you ll enjoy abundant opportunities for hiking, snorkeling, and photography. Harvard travelers will have the option of a post-trip extension to the mysterious citadel of Machu Picchu. Hilton Colón Guayaquil (Meals Aloft) WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 Guayaquil/Baltra Island/ North Seymour Island Fly to Baltra Island in the center of the Galápagos archipelago and board the Santa Cruz II for an introductory briefing and lunch. In the afternoon, disembark on North Seymour Island for a great introduction to the Galápagos. This island is full of colonies of Blue-footed Boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, two species of frigatebirds, sea lions, and marine iguanas. In the evening, join the captain for a welcome cocktail reception and dinner. THURSDAY, JULY 21 Punta Vicente Roca (Isabela Island)/ Fernandina Island In the morning, explore Punta Vicente Roca, one of the most fascinating marine sites in the Galápagos. A dinghy ride along the coast provides the opportunity to observe Galápagos penguins, Flightless Cormorants, green sea turtles, noddy terns, Blue-footed Boobies, Magnificent Frigate birds, sea lions, and fur seals. The afternoon is dedicated to exploring Fernandina Island, the youngest and most volcanically active islands in the archipelago. The island has only indigenous mammals and is one of the few places on earth to see Flightless Cormorant nesting sites. The island is also known for its large population of marine iguanas. FRIDAY, JULY 22 Tagus Cove/Urbina Bay (Isabela Island) Anchor at Tagus Cove, once frequented by whalers and pirates. Hike to a dramatic viewpoint to see the beautifully symmetrical Darwin Crater, filled with salt water. Take a dinghy ride to spot wildlife. Conditions permitting, enjoy snorkeling along the cliffs in areas rich in marine life, especially green sea turtles. After lunch, disembark at Urbina Bay at the foot of Alcedo. The area is home to colorful Galápagos land iguanas, Darwin s finches, and occasionally to giant tortoises. SATURDAY, JULY 23 Puerto Ayora/Charles Darwin Research Station (Santa Cruz Island) Sail to the town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, staffed with international scientists conducting biological research and conservation projects. Observe and photograph the giant tortoises that are part of a breeding program to release them into the wild. In the afternoon, board a motor coach to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, home of the famous El Chato Tortoise Reserve. See these amazing creatures and look for some unique land birds, such as the rare woodpecker finch, one of the world s few tool-using species. SUNDAY, JULY 24 Post Office Bay (Floreana Island) Visit Post Office Bay where, in 1793, British navigators placed a barrel so that mail could be left for guests from other vessels to be hand-delivered to its destination. Explore the Zodiac landing north shore of Floreana Island along narrow channels teeming with life. In the afternoon, explore the underwater wonders around Champion Islet, an extinct shield volcano, regarded as one of the best snorkeling spots in the archipelago. Disembark at Cormorant Point on an olivine-crystal beach to observe many bird species such as greater flamingos, pintailed ducks, common stilts, herons, sandpipers, and others. Snorkeling is also available here just off the beach. MONDAY, JULY 25 Baltra Island/Guayaquil After breakfast, disembark at Baltra Island and transfer to the airport for a flight back to Guayaquil. At night, gather for a farewell dinner.* Hilton Colón Guayaquil (B, D) * Passengers have the option of flying home later this evening to Miami and connecting home or flying to Boston the following day (July 26). The hotel room at the Hilton Colón Guayaquil is included in the program cost for the night of July 25; passengers may choose to use it until their flight home in the evening or stay the night and depart in the morning on July 26. Other flight schedules may become available in 2016. TUESDAY, JULY 26 DEPART FOR U.S. Arrive in the U.S. to catch connecting flights back home. IMPORTANT NOTE: The itinerary and program are subject to change without prior notice, due mainly to adjustments in the policies and regulations of the Galápagos National Park.
