Issues in our Borough for 2011, 2012, 2013 Rock Forest Saint-Élie Deauville Borough Services Changes coming for the Chemin de Saint-Élie! In the last edition of the InfoSherbrookois, we published the direction, challenges, and actions from the 2011, 2012 and 2013 action plan adopted by Borough of Rock Forest Saint- Élie Deauville council. The action plan can be consulted online at sherbrooke.ca/projetsrfsed. Two actions that are part of the Continue our commercial revitalization initiatives issue saw considerable progress in the last few months: Create, in collaboration with the comité de gestion pour la revitalisation du secteur de Saint-Élie and Commerce Sherbrooke, an action plan for the sector on Route 220. Support the comité de gestion pour la revitalisation du secteur de Saint-Élie in carrying out events and activities as well as implementing certain aspects of the action plan. Thanks to ongoing support from volunteers involved in the various committees, several projects came to fruition under the leadership of Philippe Cadieux, project manager with Commerce Sherbrooke. These include a slogan and a logo, a 5-year development plan, a new Web site, a merchants directory and newsletter, a Christmas contest, and a sticker to promote merchants on Chemin de Saint-Élie. On September 27, 2011, the Borough of Rock Forest Saint- Élie Deauville and Commerce Sherbrooke proudly launched the Chemin de Saint-Élie development project. The endeavour has proven successful thus far! Slogan and logo The new slogan is Un bien-être à partager (sharing our well-being). This positioning message refers to several themes, including family, nature, the rural aspect, and a sense of belonging. All actions that are part of the Chemin de Saint-Élie development project will feature this slogan along with the logo. These two elements fully represent the living environment for this sector. Development plan The Chemin Saint-Élie s 5-year development plan outlines many studies and discussions carried out following public consultations, data collection, and working meetings since 2009. The management committee, made up of residents, community and business representatives, Borough staff, Julien Lachance, councillor for the District of Saint-Élie, worked with experts from both the Rues principales Foundation and Commerce Sherbrooke. This planning document is a reference point for establishing priorities and implementing actions. Web site You can now follow the progress of this development project on the Chemin de Saint-Élie Web site at www.chemindesaintelie.com. The Chemin de Saint-Élie development plan, produced in cooperation with Commerce Sherbrooke, and results of work carried out in 2009 and 2010 with Rues principales Foundation, are all available on the site. This new platform makes it possible to communicate with everyone living in the Saint-Élie sector. Merchants directory The directory listing all merchants seeks to highlight businesses on Chemin de Saint-Élie and promote them to consumers in the Saint-Élie sector. You can consult the directory at www.chemindesaintelie.com. Des nouvelles à partager newsletter To maintain communication and cooperation among the business community, the Des nouvelles à partager newsletter is produced once a month for businesses on Chemin de Saint-Élie. The newsletter can also be found on the www.chemindesaintelie.com Web site. 156 INFOSHERBROOKOIS Winter 2011-2012

Issues in our Borough for 2011, 2012, 2013 (continued) Christmas Contest Un Noël à partager The Christmas contest for merchants on Chemin de Saint-Élie invites them to create a holiday atmosphere by adding outdoor decorations with the theme Un Noël à partager. For the name of the winner, check newspapers and visit www.chemindesaintelie.com. The Ici vous êtes servi par le propriétaire sticker On Chemin de Saint-Élie, most businesses are run by owners who work onsite, compared with other areas where major chains are present and service is sometimes less personal. In cooperation with Chemin de Saint-Élie merchants, the personalized service is being promoted through the creation of a sticker. This sticker, which can be found in Chemin de Saint-Élie businesses, states Ce commerce est opéré par le propriétaire (this business is managed by the owner). There s still a lot of work to be done by people in the Saint-Élie sectors involved in this mobilizing adventure that will benefit the whole community. Stay tuned! ORGANIZATIONS CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARIES This year, the following organizations will be celebrating the year they were founded. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them and thank them for their involvement in improving our community s quality of life year after year. 10 th anniversary of the Centre culturel Pierre-Gobeil, managed by the Comité Arts et culture de Rock Forest Saint-Élie Deauville 10 th anniversary of the Centre communautaire Richard-Gingras 20 th anniversary of the Club FADOQ Rock Forest 25 th anniversary of the Corporation de développement économique, social et communautaire (CDESC), which manages the Centre récréatif de Rock Forest 30 th anniversary of the Chevaliers de Colomb de Saint-Élie, conseil 8053 35 th anniversary of the Club Optimiste de Rock Forest 35 th anniversary of the Loisirs Le Boisjoli 95 th anniversary of the Cercle de Fermières Rock Forest Neighbourhood Watch Committee What s new for the Neighbourhood Watch Committee This year, committee meetings will include discussions on topics of interest to everyone. CERCLE DE FERMIÈRES ROCK FOREST 95 YEARS OF JOY, SHARING AND CAMARADERIE Borough Services Rock Forest Saint-Élie Deauville The Cercles de Fermières began in Europe, more precisely in Belgium, but didn t arrive in Quebec until 1915. At the time, the association was non-profit and, under the auspices of the government and encouraged by the church, promoted the concept of women farmers. The Cercles set up in parishes where they could not hide from church authority and were sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture who took control of distributing hives, eggs, fruit trees, and books on agriculture. The Cercle de Fermières de Rock Forest was founded on March 25, 1917, under the auspices of Father Napoléon Favreau. The movement included 42 young girls and women who elected Mrs. Georges Pelletier as their first president. Meetings were held at the vestry about six times per year. To respect the Cercles de Fermières slogan Pour la terre et le foyer, classes were offered on a variety of topics around the theme: hygiene, darning, re-using old clothes, sewing, cutting, cheese, butter, and preserve making, etc. In the years that followed its foundation, members of the Cercle de Rock Forest evolved with the changes of the times, which included farm work, the education of their many children, war, and the invention of the automobile, telephone, television, and computer. There was also an evolution in the artisans tools consider the modernization of the iron, weaving loom, and sewing machine. Members of the Cercle de Rock Forest worked hard to learn the new techniques that followed, and then had the pleasure of sharing it with young people interested in discovering them. The Cercle purchased its first weaving loom in January 1935 and lent it to each member for three weeks at a time. In December 1971, the Cercle s monthly meeting was held in a new location the basement of Saint-Roch church. In 1982, the Cercle moved to a new location at the Centre communautaire Optimiste. Today, this location has 10 weaving looms that are used daily to create rugs, household linens, and blankets. Several classes and workshops are also regularly offered on a variety of techniques including knitting, tatting, and Hardanger embroidery. In 2012, our Cercle includes not only women farmers but women of all types. We work together to preserve arts and craft heritage and improve the living conditions of women and families. If you re interested in being part of a dynamic group, you re welcome to join us! Cercle members also enjoy taking part in various community projects. For the past several years, we help fund the Fondation OLO (for œuf, lait, orange eggs, milk and oranges). This foundation supports young pregnant women by providing them with foods vital to the development of healthy children. To help the MIRA organization, we collect ink cartridges to helps cover some of the costs associated with training guide dogs. We also take part in local community projects, such as making polar fleece blankies for the Petits cœurs au chaud, a group founded by Dr. Caroline Gauthier, which are distributed to children in foster homes. Last year, with the cooperation of the Cercle de Fermières Beaulieu, we made hats, scarves and mittens for the organizations Famille-Espoir and Service d aide aux Néo- Canadiens. We expect to repeat the experience this year. Finally, each spring for the past five years, we ve had the pleasure of exhibiting our handiwork at the Centre culturel Pierre-Gobeil along with three other organizations from the Borough. This year, with our sisters from the Cercle de Fermières Beaulieu, we will have the pleasure of introducing you to the history of weaving. The exhibit opens on April 14, the same day as our annual exhibit, and will continue for a month until May 13. We look forward to meeting you and having the pleasure of sharing our arts and craft knowledge. You may even have the urge to join us!
