BRESCIA Easily accessible by plane from the airports of Verona, Milan and Bergamo, Brescia offers all the style you would expect from a country with such a rich history. Its narrow streets give way to large squares flanked by porticoes packed with restaurants, cafés, bars and shops, making it a pleasure to walk around, peeking through intricate large wrought iron gates that shield courtyards peppered by fountains and statues. The town was founded by the Romans, and later occupied by the Lombards and Venetians, all of whom have left behind magnificent buildings including the Roman Forum and Capitoline Temple, Brescia Castle, and the Santa Giulia City Museum, packed with treasures from Brescia s past. Of its numerous churches, the Duomo Vecchio, on the Piazza Paolo VI, built in the 11th century, is remarkable for its circular shape that was unusual in medieval times. The nearby Piazza della Loggia was constructed by the Venetians in the 15th century and houses the Torre dell Orologio clock tower with its gleaming astronomical clock flanked by moving statues that ring the hours. Brescia is also popular for cultural events, the most famous being the Mille Miglia classic car historic race held in May.
LAKE GARDA Garda is the largest Italian lake, situated at the foot of the Alps, at a short distance from Brescia, Verona, Milan, Venice and Mantua. Lake Garda offers splendid natural scenery, full of colours, surrounded by the Dolomites of Brenta in the north and the gentle slopes of the morainic hills in the south. Rich vegetation flourishes thanks to the Mediterranean climate: lemon trees, oleanders, magnolias and bougainvillea. The cultivation of vineyards and olive groves produces good wines and olive oil. Lake Garda is ideally situated for excursions. Almost every sport can be practiced and it is also an ideal place for fun, relax and shopping.
Franciacorta: the Italian Sparkling Wine region Franciacorta is a small region, just below Lake Iseo and near the cities of Brescia and Bergamo, which for many years has been successful in spreading its fame worldwide for the quality of its precious sparkling wine called Franciacorta. Today the noble bubbles of Franciacorta belong to the small group of excellent wines of the world, a remarkable success achieved thanks to tenacity and professionalism in less than 40 years. The best wineries are run by friendly producers and are located in charming historic buildings. Cultivation technique and a great passion for the production of high quality wines have evolved.
LAKE ISEO Lake Iseo is the fourth largest lake in Lombardy, fed by the River Oglio. Almost equally divided between the Provinces of Bergamo and Brescia, the lake is quite close to Milan, Verona, Mantua and Venice. Although this is a heavily industrialised part of the world, the area remains one of outstanding natural beauty. In the middle of the lake there is Monte Isola (or Montisola), the largest island of any lake in southern Europe. Most of the lakeside towns have a picturesque promenade, a few interesting buildings and some winding historic lanes. Some of the local churches are very old and contain art that is well worth seeing. There are interesting tourist attractions on Lake Iseo, including some rather unusual sights: Marone with its pyramids, the valley at the head of the lake, Valle Camonica, dotted with remarkable rock-carvings covering thousands of years, Capo di Ponte famous for its archaeological park.
