To reward excellence in health research Mack Boots has established an award at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Health Sciences to acknowledge the exciting work undertaken by emerging health researchers. The Body s Foundations The human foot is an amazing piece of engineering. Unlike a building s foundation, feet are required to perform a number of opposing functions while walking, bending and squatting. After heel strike the foot is required to be a flexible adaptor to accommodate uneven terrain and absorb the body s impact forces. Later during single-leg support the foot is required to provide a stable base for the body s centre of mass to progress forward. During push-off the foot produces power and transmits the power generated from the calf muscles to the ground to propel the body forward. To achieve these goals and an efficient walking gait the foot consists of 28 bones, 20 muscles and 33 joints all with unique functions. For footwear to be comfortable the design needs to consider these requirements and the dynamic nature of foot function. Too often traditional safety footwear disregards the functional requirements of the foot and simply treats the foot as a single rigid structure. Sixty five percent (65%) of wearers of safety footwear have foot problems that are caused by their safety footwear. 1 At Mack Boots we take foot function seriously in order to reduce the number of foot complaints experienced by workers.
