NEW CALEDONIA ATTRACTIONS 1. Tjibaou Cultural Centre At the request of Jean-Marie Tjibaou and under the Matignon Accords, was created the Agency for the Development of Kanak Culture (ADCK), whose mission is to support the archaeological and linguistic Kanak heritage, encourage the contemporary forms of Kanak culture, promote cultural exchanges, and define and conduct research programs. Designed by Renzo Piano, the Tjibaou Cultural Centre was built in Noumea, on Tina peninsula. It opened its doors to the public on June 16, 1998. It covers 8 acres. Renzo Piano nestled the buildings in the vegetation. The architect was inspired by the traditional Kanak architecture, especially by the construction of huts when he designed the ten central buildings, having structures that combine metal with wood. In the design of the huts, the techniques of the future, as the glued laminated timber, (also called glulam) are combined with traditional materials. The huts of the three villages are connected by a trail that evokes the central path specific for the Kanak traditional habitat. The centre s architecture is in harmony with the wind that is present on the site. The cultural centre is engulfed in the original vegetation that surrounds it, enriched with many species endemic to the country. The Kanak Path, meandering along the mangroves, surrounds the cultural centre and links it to Téa Kanaké, the founding hero. It takes the visitors in the discovery of numerous plant species and plants, carrying meanings and functions in Melanesian culture. Because of its original configuration, combining in one place an art centre, a museum, a hall, performance spaces and a specialized library, Tjibaou Cultural Centre offers a multitude of choices.

2. Blue River Provincial Park The Blue River Provincial Park (Parc Provincial de la Riviere Bleue) was created in 1980 and covers a surface area of 9,045 hectares. It is located just under an hour s drive from Nouméa, at Route de Yate, Yate, South Province, New Caledonia. The park has giant kaori trees and most of New Caledonia's birds. It is also home to the largest population of cagou, New Caledonia s national bird, thanks to the Southern Province's repopulation program. One of the park s famous features is a drowned kaori forest, the trunks reaching, ghostlike, out of the clear blue water. Go on a moonlit paddle to become part of it. Learn more about New Caledonian history in this unique natural environment, alternating between observing the scrub that has grown back in the mining zones and the rain forest. Both of these environments are exceptional for the abundance and diversity of the flora, and there is an especially high rate of endemic plants. The Blue River Provincial Park is a protected reserve. You are welcome to enjoy yourself here, however you are asked to follow certain rules. You can drive along the banks of Rivière Blanche to the end of the road, walk or bike along the Rivière Bleue side, or kayak up the river. Opening hours: Open every day except Monday from 7am to 5pm. Visitors are allowed to enter the park until 2pm. Spacious protected Blue River Park is a reserve for many bird species, including the cagou. The landscape is a mixture of the far south s typical scrub vegetation and dense rainforest, and includes gigantic kaori trees, at least 1000 years old with trunks up to 2.7m across. There is a visitor information centre by the entrance gate which has good displays in English and French on the park s flora and fauna. At the entrance you will also find free maps that outline the park s many walks. The park has toilet and picnic facilities. Rates: Park entrance: 400 F / person reduced rate: 200 F / person Students: 50 F / person
