Chapter Newsletter for Sept 2005 Est. 1990 Vol. #9-2005 Directors Report Howdy All, This past week a very good friend from Arizona who just retired from the Army after 28 years, brought his 2001 Softtail Duce out to Iowa for a few days of reminiscing, good riding, making new friends, and just to enjoy some R & R. Steve & I met in the 3 rd Grade, and lived four blocks apart. We walked to school, built models, road bikes, raced minnie bikes, road Hondas, double dated, we each others fathers as teachers, and we went into the service together. I went into the Navy and Steve went into the Army. I got out and he didn t, ha. After 45 years of friendship here we were in Iowa riding our Harley s together. In four days of touring around Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, we logged in about1000 miles. At one point we had stopped for gas and two boys road in on their bicycles. They were riding all over the place. Steve and I were sitting on a bench drinking a soda watching them ride around the station, both thinking the same thing. The station manager came out to tell the boys to stop riding. They did and joined us at the bench. I asked one of them how old they were? He replied they were both 9. So I said, we had met at age 9 some 45 years ago and we had gotten our start on a pair of Schwins too. They didn t get it. So I said, say if you let us ride your bikes around the station, you can set on our Bikes? Just don t touch anything. That was easy, we sat them on the Bikes and hopped on theirs. Steve and I went wild flying around the station. Boy did we get some looks. We were getting air, making sliding stops, and whipping in and around cars with two big smiles on our faces. You should have seen the look on their faces as we returned the bikes. I think everyone at the station looked the same! After we helped them off our bikes, they went their way and we went ours. Guess my point is, we may have to grow old, but who says we have to grow up? After 45 years Steve and I did what we did together so long ago, and for just a moment we stepped back in time and became kids again. How becoming for two old friends out for a ride on our Harleys, wind in our faces, sharing old stories and making new ones. Well now down to business: I received a e-mail from Jan Ellingson Administrator at the Makee Manor just outside Waukon. She has asked if the HOG Chapter would consider a Fund Raiser for them? Gary Landsgard mentioned we could incorporate this with his ride. At the September meeting we can discuss the details and see if everyone would be in favor of a Fund Raiser for them? Thank you, Myrna, Jim, the Jevenes, and Gary for getting in all your information and dates for our Winter Off-Site meetings. We will post the Winter Meeting schedule at the Shop, and in the Newsletter. Here are the dates and locations for Winter Off-Site HOG meetings:

Iron Butt Ride AN UNDOCUMENTED SS1K by Kay Brewster SaddleSore 1000: An Iron Butt Association sanctioned ride 1000 miles in 24 hours or less. Minimum for IBA membership. Ronnie and I left Sunday morning August 14 at 2:30 a.m. to ride to Wall South Dakota, 515 miles from our house in Spring Valley Minnesota, with the intent of returning home the same day. The best thing that can be said about an Iron Butt ride is that it was uneventful! With one exception, that was the case this day - Ronnie s CB antenna broke on the way home. I saw it bouncing around the Interstate, being run over by the motor homes and trailers. The weather for this trip was ideal. We left home with chaps and long johns, and the temperature never got much above 70. There was mist for ½ hour, but we never got wet. This particular weekend was an interesting time to go, as a LOT of folks were returning from Sturgis. The GPS stats: Total miles: 1031. Our overall average speed was 58 mph, with a moving average speed of 69.8. Time spent was 17.5 hours total with 15 of those moving, and 2.5 stopped. As the miles piled up, we made more stops to rest. We have done this trip twice before; the first time with Norb Ryan. Our time then was longer, since I was on a Sportster. The Electra Glide is an easier beast for this trip, but even with it, we generally stop about every 100 miles, especially as the hours pile up. Why leave before 3 a.m.? We like to minimize the time spent riding at night, and this puts the dark at the beginning of the ride when we are on familiar roads and not so tired. You don t want to end up in East Bumfuzzle at oh dark thirty.although this is an excellent time to tackle Chicago. Why do it at all? First for the challenge. Second, draw a 1000-mile radius circle on a US map: Be nearly anywhere in the circle this time tomorrow. This ride was undocumented since we didn t get witnesses or keep logs or gas receipts. We are already IBA members and we just did it for fun. Rules and regulations for this sanctioned ride and others are on the website: www.ironbutt.com
