From the Prez March 1, 2014 The Flakey Huntsville Ski Club Newsletter March 2014 Most Skiing for HSC has been completed. Only one CSC trip remains and is only a couple of weeks away. I m sure someone is already thinking about next ski season already. If you are interested in going to a specific ski resort or if you are willing to coordinate your own trip, please contact Gene Hartsfield, our ski trips director. You can reach him on his cell phone at 256-497-0474. At the HSC February meeting we all enjoyed a Chocolate Feast. Thanks to our Social Director, Diana Faust and the event organizer, Ina Jenkins, and all the wonderful cooks who volunteered their time and expertise to make it a huge success. If you were not a chocoholic before this event, you may have since become one. It was a delicious and beautiful display of sweets to satisfy even the greatest sweet-tooth among our number. Annual BOD Election. At our March meeting our new HSC Board of Directors will be elected. Please be present to cast your vote for our new leaders. There are still a few positions for which we still need someone to volunteer. Of course, all the positions are open for nominations until the March meeting. But, the positions of secretary, treasurer and social director are still vacant. Please contact George Cass to submit a name for nomination. Looking for something to do??? Check out the latest information and pictures on our Face book group page at https://www.facebook.com/ groups/huntsvilleskiclub/. Also, check out our website at www.huntsvilleskiclub.org. Become a Crescent Ski Council Representative HSC has been a member club of the Crescent Ski Council (CSC) for several years, along with 20 other southeastern ski clubs. CSC s purpose is to promote winter recreational sports and activities such as, but not limited to, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding and racing for its Members. CSC also promotes and coordinates year-round social and recreational activities for Members. The main forum for providing these benefits to its Members is through conferences and special events. The council functions through the efforts of a dedicated board of directors and club representatives. All the benefits provided by the CSC are the result of collaboration of club representatives which individually represent their own local ski club. The CSC cannot function without individuals. CSC representatives are responsible for supporting their local club s desires at the CSC conferences held in the spring and fall of each year. The last few years these conferences have been held in Myrtle Beach, SC in the spring and Gatlinburg, TN in the fall. Since the beginning of the HSC s relationship with CSC, Gene Hartsfield, our current Ski Trips Director, and I, current President, have been the unofficial HSC representatives to the CSC. We have enjoyed this responsibility because we love our club and the opportunities provided to travel to fun places and participate in the strategic planning and other fun related activities offered at the conventions. Many of our members have also attended these conventions and shared in the fun. But it is time that this responsibility is passed on to someone else who shares our devotion to HSC. We have two votes at the CSC business meetings conducted at the end of each conference. In addition to paying for our annual CSC membership, our club has authorized some financial support for our representatives who attend. We need you to consider taking on this important responsibility for our club. If you are interested and would like to take a trial run, attend the upcoming CSC Spring Convention at Myrtle Beach, SC on Apr 24-27. Call me if you are interested. Huntsville Ski Club Hosts the 8th Annual TN Ridge Ride, Hike & Picnic April 12, 2013 It s time to get those bicycles oiled up and your bodies In shape because the Annual TN Ridge Ride is just around the corner. This year we have decided to add a hike to the day s activities. In addition to our bike tour which runs the ridges and hollers through Lynchburg, TN, a hike is offered at Tims Ford State Park. This hiking trail is relatively new and extends from the visitor s center through the beautiful forest with fantastic photo ops of the lake along the way. The dogwoods will be in bloom and the sweet smell honeysuckle will greet you all along the route. For our bikers we will visit the BBQ Caboose in downtown Lynchburg, TN, only 9 miles from the start. We relax a few minutes while entertained by a Country/Bluegrass band during a live Radio broadcast, drink a cool glass of lemonade, and dance in the aisles if you are in the mood. Bikers are free to tour the historic town, the home of Jack Daniels Distillery, at their leisure. Souvenir shops, leather shops, ice cream shops, a hardware store, a museum, and several restaurants surround the Lynchburg square. The distillery, only a short walk away, is also conducting tours as they do every day except on major holidays. After our stop in Lynchburg, bikers have a choice of several return routes ranging from 20 to 26 miles for the round trip. Maps will be provided. Also, we will all share a potluck picnic lunch from 1 3 pm at the Breeden s home. When: April 12, 9 am until. Where: The Home of Bob & Debbie Breeden, 173 Beech Hill Dr, Winchester, TN 37398 What to Bring: Bicycle, appropriate clothing for weather conditions, and a dish to share at the picnic. You may also BYOB if you are so inclined. Put this date on your calendar now and be sure to let Bob know if you are coming so they can provide the proper number of sandwiches and soft drinks for everyone. Call Bob at (256) 665-1800 or email at rbreeden@monsterboadband.com. TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Hiking March 9 hike in Monte Sano State Park. Hikers will meet in the hiker s parking lot in the park. There is a fee to enter the Park: $3 for age 61 and under, $1 for 62 and over. Unless otherwise announced, all Sunday hikes will leave from this same location at the same time.
