Construction of the ropeway began in September 1999, was inaugurated in November 2000, and has been in operation since November 2000. The departing station is located at Parque Almirante Reis in central Funchal. The length of the cable car line is 3,718 m and the height difference 560 m; the trip takes approx. 15 minutes. Sight description based on wikipedia B) Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built as a follow-up to the open-air mass held by Pope Pio IX in 1904 to celebrate the anniversary of the Monte region. The chapel is built in a neo-classical design, characteristic of those times, and boasts a collection of four mosaic glass windows by Ricardo Leone. From the entrance, the path descends past koi fish ponds, down a series of steps into the ravine. One path is lined with decorative modern azulejos panels, each showing key moments of Portugal s history, which is followed by a series showing the rebuilding of the capital. The church is also the final resting place of Emperor Karl I of Austria and King of Hungary, the last Hapsburg monarch, who was deposed in 1918 at the end of World War I after just two years in power. It serves light meals, hot and cold drinks, including a fine range of milkshakes. There s a roof terrace, though the best tables are outside where you can admire the view of the city. The variety of souvenirs available here are at reasonable prices. The gardens spill down seventeen acres of a verdant ravine, toward an eighteenth century building that is home to the park s owner, José Rodrigues Berardo, a local tobacco magnate. You ll see the dapper-looking drivers lined up on the street beneath the church. The toboggans are basically giant wicker baskets, attached to wooden runners, which are oiled using a greasy rag.
