Continue to the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery, where 2,048 Canadians are buried, and the town of St. Germain La Blanche Herbe. In St. Germain, visit Ardenne Abbey, the site where 18 Canadian soldiers were held and executed on the two days after the D-Day landings under the orders of the infamous Nazi war criminal Kurt Meyer, who was later convicted of this war crime and imprisoned. Local Flavour: Stop for lunch in Corseullessur-Mer. Dinner is served at a restaurant in Honfleur s harbour. Normandy & D-Day On June 6, 1944, despite mounting challenges, a heroic formation of Allied troops achieved the largest coordinated military invasion in world history on the beaches of Normandy, triggering the beginning of the end of World War II. Allied troops faced heavy resistance and saw thousands of casualties, but they succeeded in securing the beaches and marching on to Paris to free France from German control. As both a tactical and a psychological blow to Hitler and his troops, D-Day will forever be remembered as the moment of World War II when the tide began to turn against the Nazis. DAY SEVEN B L BAYEUX CAEN Excursion: Bayeux. Treasured for both its artistic and historic value, the Bayeux Tapestry tells the story of the 1066 Battle of Hastings, which marks its 950th anniversary in 2016.
