About half way through her meal, Sallie Page noticed an unwanted visitor in her salad, waving his little, green legs at her! The manager came out and apologized to her and gave her a huge, hot cookie (with ice cream) in a cast iron skillet to try to make up for her obvious discomfort! We all enjoyed sharing it with her, especially several of the ladies who decided that they didn t feel like eating the rest of their salads either. Those who attended were: Maggie Bortree, Mona Keksis, Helga Dinwiddie, Kathy McKee, Jann Blankenship, Ann Miller, Sallie Page, Candy Howard, Jackie Clark, Alana Velez and Shirley Rohr. 4R Holdings All Awards Armour Self Storage Babbitt Ford Baskin Robbins Big O Tires Burger King Cinder Hills Boarding Kennel Coconino Auto Supply Coconino County Courtyard by Marriott Express Yourself Signs, LLC Golightly Tire Graceland Portable Buildings Interiors Plus Ken s Import Service Mama Burger Mountain High Plumbing Muffler Magic Napa Auto Parts Niles Radio O Reilly Auto Parts Stage Left Deli TSB Undercar Specialist Transmission Man June Birthdays 6/2 Ed Wiebe 6/2 Juergen Burmeister 6/7 Andy Keksis 6/8 Alexandra Bakovych 6/9 Sallie Page 6/13 Melinda Auten 6/17 Ken Mannila 6/19 Claudia Haden 6/30 Michael Hernandez July Anniversaries 7/3 James & Judith Lukas 7/? PAGE 4 OH! WHAT FUN THE FUN RUN WAS Either as participants or just well wishers, a number of Club members enjoyed the launching of the ROUTE 66 FUN RUN which started in Seligman on May 2 and finished the following day at the Colorado River. And here is some Breaking News...Not one but TWO club members won awards at the finish line. Juergen Burmeister took the Best German Car award with his BMW while Joe Policastro took the Best English Car Award with his 1952 MG TD. (Too bad we don t have any French Citreon owners in the club.) 825 cars actually participated in this years Fun Run. Lots of Corvettes and Mustangs of course, but tons of special interest cars (and bikes), too many to photograph for this story. Now, about those rewards, Joe Policastro reigned supreme in the British car arena with his red 52 MG TD. Juergen Burmeister took the Best German Car award, but as he had already taken off for home when the prizes were given, he enlisted Sean Evans to pick up his plaque, however Sean was not going to be able to assist, so the Canadians graciously accepted the task and took possession of it. Later Sean received in the mail a well packaged trophy, along with an application to the Canadian Car Club for Juergen to fill out! Sean presented the trophy to Juergen at our May meeting. Here s Vern Phannenstiel, Sean Evans and Juergen Burmeister waiting for the send off in Seligman. Note Sean & Juergen s appropriate Route 66 themed shirts. Check this one out; a GMC El Camino, complete with the original swivel seats and two tone paint. No, your eyes are not failing.that is a mini car posing as a Mercury. You should have seen the gyratics it took for the driver to get in. Not sure if he ever got out.

PAGE 6 FUN RUN FOLLOW UP On the way home from seeing off the participants of the Fun Run in Seligman, Paul Wilk and Jon Wiedenheft came upon this stranded bronze colored Mustang on the side of Highway 40, a few miles west of Flagstaff. As the passenger door of the Mustang was open, and the hood not up, Paul and Jon were thinking the worse. Suddenly a head popped up from the Ford and yes, it was Sallie Page. Apparently she heard a loud pop under the hood and decided to pull over to the side of the road. A puddle of green fluid under the car and a hole in the top of the air conditioner the size of a half dollar confirmed that something evil had happened. She had called for a tow truck an hour before and expected it in 20 minutes. The hole So Paul and Jon waited with Sallie for awhile, when Ken and Candy Miller stopped to help out. Meanwhile Sallie got on her phone and was assured that the tow truck would be there in about 20 minutes. Well, needless to say the group had a very nice visit for over two hours when finally a tow truck pulled up. The driver was actually on his day off and called in to support an overly active Saturday. He was nice enough that he took their picture..so they could remember this special outing. Random thoughts as I age As submitted by Kennedy Torel for our amusement Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes; come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller! Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet! I don't trip over things, I do random gravity checks! I don't need anger management. I need people to stop pissing me off! Old age is coming at a really bad time! When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment... now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation! The biggest lie I tell myself is, "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it." Lord grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can & the friends to post my bail when I finally snap! I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights". I'm just very wise. My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance to idiots that needs work.

PAGE 7 SAM S CLUB CHARITY CAR SHOW With dark gray rain clouds threatening, the Route 66 Car Club still provided an excellent showing with 14 cars Saturday May 23 in the Sam s Club parking lot. And two trophies were won by club members. Mike and Marva Hernandez blue Ford pick-up truck took 3rd Best in Show while Jeff Bryan s 39 Ford took Best Interior.

PAGE 8 SAM S CLUB (Con t) Randy Travis posted this Memorial for Dick Gordon on the rear window of his new Nova Eric Sommers displayed not one but two cars (ctr & right) Jeff Bryan receiving his Best Interior Award Congratulations to Jeff & Mike Mike Hernandez was awarded 3rd Place Best in Show Discover Route 66 Archives! PAGE 9 SEDONA COFFEE POT RESTAURANT AND CRUISE TO JEROME The run was from ADOT down the 89 to Sedona on May 16 where a awesome breakfast was had at the Sedona Coffee Pot Restaurant. Afterwards a number of club members ventured down to Jerome to the Museum where they had a very enjoyable and informative time. Cruise members were Pat & Ed Wiebe, Ron & Helga Dinwiddie, Candy Howard, Bob & Maggie Bortree, Randy Travis, Cecil & Lela Gary, Mike & Marva Hernandez, Doug & Judy Bischoff and grand daughter, and Jon Wiedenheft.

PAGE 10 WHERE DID THIS EMBLEM COME FROM? By Bob Bortree I was not aware of the history behind our club emblem until recently. I asked questions and realized that the thought behind the design of our emblem would be of interest to our members. The official emblem for the club had previously been the standard Route 66 insignia with Car Club written across it. Around 1990-1991, our club became aware that a Route 66 Car Club in the Chicago area was using a similar emblem. A committee ( Kaye Roper, Dick Weaver, Gail Tever and Ken Starr ) was assembled and they designed the current emblem that we have today. Ken Starr worked in a Graphics business and, according to Dick Weaver, also designed the current National Street Rod Association emblem. Thoughts behind the design of the new emblem were: Copper Turquoise White Route 66 Red Arizona emblem with state color copper. Represents the stone prevalent in Northern Arizona the light Aqua color that surrounds the state of Arizona in the emblem. Standard Route 66 emblem. Defined Route 66 with stops from the Eagles song. Just a reminder...get those antique planes and classic cars ready for this big show which replaces the Valle Thunder over Coconino show. Last Page
