Paiewonsky Library, University of the Virgin Islands Wednesday, 10 August 2011 The Information and Technology Services (ITS) Department of the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas Campus, will host a tour of its newly upgraded and reorganized Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library facility. The tour will be followed by a brief presentation and panel discussion on the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funded collaborative funeral booklets digitization project between UVI and the Government of the Virgin Islands Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums (DLAM) of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. Roundtrip transportation will be provided from and to Windward Passage Hotel and the Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library. The walk includes many stairs and some uneven surfaces so be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes! The study tour will include guided visits through four historical homes each unique in structure and history: Villa Notman, Britannia House, Haagensen House and at the bottom of the famous 99 Steps Hotel 1829. Transportation will be provided from Windward Passage to Blackbeard s Hill at the start of your tour. At the end of your tour you are free to make your way back to your hotel on your own (an easy10-minute walk) or take some time to explore downtown Charlotte Amalie shops and the waterfront along the way. OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS Optional Excursion A (half-day) Friday, August 12, 2011 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM Fee: US$45.00 An Historical Walking Tour of Cruz Bay Town, St. John For those who would like to see more of the U.S. Virgin Islands after the Satellite Meeting ends on Friday, you will be hosted by the St. John Historical Society for an historic walking tour of Cruz Bay, St. John. A taxi will transport you from the Windward Passage Hotel at 1:00 PM to the Red Hook Ferry Terminal on the East of St. Thomas. During the 30-minute drive to and from Red Hook, you will enjoy amazing views of the St. Thomas south-east and north-east coasts from high atop Skyline Drive. Upon arrival in Red Hook you will board the St. John passenger ferry for the 20-minute ride across the waters of Drake s Passage to lovely Cruz Bay on the island of St. John. On the way you will pass many of the cays that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands, and you will get a closer look at the ultra-blue and green waters and white sand beaches of the USVI and the British Virgin Islands nearby. In Cruz Bay, you will be greeted by your guide, noted Virgin Islands Historian and author, David W. Knight, and other members of the St. John Historical Society. Your walking tour will begin and end at the ferry dock but the rich narrative and colourful history of St. John will transport you back in time. Today, over two-thirds of St. John is protected under the National Park Service and is home to less than 5,000 residents, offering tourists some of the USVI s best restaurants and shops. At the end of your tour you will board the ferry in Cruz Bay for your return passage across the waters to Red Hook. The St. Croix Landmarks Society and the Virgin Islands Ancestry Discovery Group are teaming up to provide you with an excursion that will transport you from one side of the island with your seaplane landing in Christiansted Harbor, to the other side in historically quaint Frederiksted. You ll experience vistas from former sugar plantations and the damp, leafy growth of a tropical rain forest. You ll visit the Whim Plantation Museum, and its adjacent St. Croix Landmarks Society Research Library and Archives where you will get to see researchers using the St. Croix African Roots Project database. Other historical destinations may include Fort Christianvaern, Fort Frederick, the Lawaetz Museum and more. Lunch will be provided and there can even be some free time for shopping before you return to St. Thomas on the seaplane, or continue on by plane directly to San Juan, Puerto Rico to attend the IFLA World Library and Information Congress. Or, you can decide to stay the night and attend a World Music Under the Stars Concert Saturday evening hosted by the St. Croix Landmarks Society at Whim Museum. After a brief presentation and orientation by CGL scholars on Caribbean family history, tour the library and spend the morning doing your own research using local resources.
