castle combe The Gates is set in the very heart of the idyllic village of Castle Combe; little has changed since the 15th Century with no street lights or TV aerials to detract from its ancient beauty. Voted England s prettiest village, Castle Combe is the perfect destination should you wish to relax, walk and enjoy the slow pace of country life - yet it is only a short drive from the cosmopolitan cities of Bath and Bristol, each offering a fantastic array of shops, restaurants, theatres and bars. The Gates Staying at The Gates is a unique experience; beautifully refurbished but retaining all its character, the three bedroom cottage sleeps six in total luxury and comfort. The position of The Gates could not be better; opposite the centrepiece of the village - the Medieval Market Cross, the house is on the edge of the village churchyard. Indeed, the gable wall features a Gothic window originally from the church. Some parts of the house date back to Medieval times and most of the roof timbers are over 400 years old. In 2003 the house was sadly devastated by fire but the building has been beautifully restored retaining all the character of the original structure yet enhanced by many luxury facilities and decoration. Film set for Stardust So beautiful is the village that it is regularly used as a film location. Many TV programmes have been shot there, including Miss Marples, Poirot and the 1960 s Hollywood classic film Dr Dolittle. The latest blockbuster to be shot in Castle Combe is the fantasy adventure movie Stardust, starring Robert De Niro, Sienna Miller, Peter O Toole and Claudia Schiffer. The Gates itself features as a Victorian shop, its exterior dressed immaculately for the period and the lounge transformed to be the shop interior. Come and stay in the house Sienna Miller was served by her sweetheart Tristram in the movie Stardust!
