Hunting and Other Outdoor Pursuits Although hunting is permitted on essentially all stateowned land in the Adirondacks, knowing where and when to hunt is daunting, even if you have a grasp on the geography of the mountains. Since the mid-1800s, professional sportsmen have guided visitors through the complex landscape of the Adirondack Mountains. Today, these guides are licensed by New York State and have a passion for the outdoors. Guides can also assist you with a variety of outdoor pursuits, such as cross-country skiing and hiking. Tourists have trusted Adirondack Guides since the 19th century, as depicted in this painting by Albert Bierstadt. Bierstadt was a member of the Hudson River School, a group of artists famous for their depictions of natural landscapes in the Adirondacks and elsewhere. Consider hiring an outdoor guide whether you are planning on hunting, hiking, fishing, or exploring the magnificent Adirondack Mountains. Skiing McCauley Mountain Ski Resort Whiteface Mountain 633 ft drop for skiing, 14 trails. In summer and fall the chair lift offers spectacular views of the area. Chairlift, T-Bars, Rope Tow, Beginner Hill/Cross Country trails, lighted slope for night skiing, food court and lounge. Hickory Ski Center Located in the southeastern Adirondacks, this skiing destination boasts 107 trails with 15 total lifts. Consider taking the recently revived Gore Mountain Ski Train, operating from Saratoga Springs by the Saratoga & North Creek Railway. WILMINGTON WARRENSBURG Nestled in the scenic Adirondack Mountains just one hour from Albany is the historic Hickory Ski Center. Founded as Hickory Hill in 1945 by veterans of the famed ski troops of the American 10th Mountain Division, Hickory has stood like a sentinel on the banks of the Hudson River for almost 70 years. The spot at the confluence of the Schroon and Hudson Rivers under the dominating presence of a sheer rock massif is amongst the most beautiful in the Adirondacks. Gore Mountain NORTH CREEK Imagine skiing down the largest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountains at Whiteface. Balto's Tip: Interested in snowmobiling? Visit our companion project, NYSnowmobileWebMap.com or download the no-receptionneeded NY State Snowmobiling for an interactive map of snowmobile trails in the Adirondacks and across New York. MAPS / COMPASS / ADIRONDACK TRAILS PHONE APP Practical Information for the Adirondacks In case of any emergency: know the DEC Forest Ranger Adirondacks Emergency Phone Line: 518-891-0235 If you have cell service in the Adirondacks, dialing 911 may direct you to a 911 Dispatcher in a neighboring county or potentially even Vermont. If for any reason a 911 Dispatcher can not assist you, dial the DEC Forest Ranger Emergency Phone Line. DEC Forest Rangers are highly trained emergency responders knowledgeable of the geography and subtleties of the Adirondack Mountains. Respect and help maintain the Adirondacks. Do not litter alongside the road. When it comes to anything you bring with you, remember to pack-in, pack-out, even if the items are biodegradable If there are no privies available in your location, dispose of human waste by digging a 6 8 hole at least 150 feet from water or campsites Follow the Leave No Trace principles: 1. Plan Ahead and Prepare 2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces 3. Dispose of Waste Properly 4. 5. 6. 7. Leave What You Find Minimize Campfire Impacts Respect Wildlife Be Considerate of Other Visitors ( Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics ) Balto's Tip: Planning any outdoor activities? If so, you'll need a lot more gear than this! See our other guides at ADKTrailMap.com for more detailed information about each activity so that you're fully prepared. Page 6 of 7

Please Do Not Solely Rely on Electronic Technology. When doing anything out on the trails, we urge you take a map, a compass, and know how to use them. We offer an online interactive map that allows you to zoom in print your own map. We also offer a wealth of downloadable PDFs about hiking, fishing, camping, birding, and more. For smartphones, our Adirondack Trails app is GPS-enabled. Once downloaded to your smartphone, the app provides a happy marriage of old technology (maps and compasses) and new. It does not require cell phone service. Unlike a paper map, the app will show you exactly where you are: on or off the trail. Both maps and apps have their limitations. Use together, with common sense, and enjoy the beauty of the Adirondacks with confidence. Find more helpful tips for an enjoyable Adirondacks trip from Balto at ADKTrailMap.com.
