2014 WORLDWIDE TRAVEL PROGRAM 2015 THE PRIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA, NAMIBIA, BOTSWANA AND ZIMBABWE Chobe River Safari aboard Zambezi Queen WITH Ethnomusicologist Kay Kaufman Shelemay March 12 25, 2015

THE PRIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA, NAMIBIA, BOTSWANA AND ZIMBABWE March 12 25, 2015 (11 nights / 14 days) VICTORIA FALLS PRIVATE GAME RESERVE POST-PROGRAM OPTION TABLE MOUNTAIN, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA TRAVEL ON AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY AND EXPERIENCE THE WONDERS OF FOUR NATIONS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA, WHERE NATURE S SPECTACLE IS AT ITS MOST DRAMATIC, history is rich, the culture is diverse and the Big Five game-viewing in pristine natural habitats is extraordinary. Few experiences can match this exclusive, in-depth itinerary and once in a-lifetime opportunity to travel the breadth of southern Africa. A highlight of your journey is a three-night river safari aboard the Five Star m.s. Zambezi Queen. On the legendary Chobe River in Namibia, enjoy naturalist guided excursions by small watercraft, a unique alternative to traditional land safaris and an exceptional perspective from which to observe the magnificent wildlife. Enjoy superb game-viewing aboard four wheel-drive safari vehicles in seldom visited Botswana, a haven for nearly all of the southern African mammal species, and in MalaMala Private Game Reserve. Follow Mandela s long road to freedom from Soweto to Robben Island and on to Johannesburg as the President of South Africa, the rainbow nation. Savor glorious Cape Town, dramatically situated between Table Mountain and its stunning harbor. Visit three UNESCO World Heritage sites, including one of the world s Seven Natural Wonders, Zimbabwe s incomparable Victoria Falls. FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/HAA/TRAVEL

HARVARD STUDY LEADER Kay Kaufman Shelemay Ethnomusicologist Kay Kaufman Shelemay has carried out fieldwork in Africa (Ethiopia and Ghana), the Middle East (Israel) and in multiple locales in the United States. Shelemay s writing and lectures focus on musical traditions that cross boundaries as seen in her prize winning book Music, Ritual, and Falasha History and her W. W. Norton textbook Soundscapes: Exploring Music in a Changing World, which includes case studies on music traditions throughout the world. She has offered courses at Harvard on the music and culture of Africa and looks forward to sharing the sights and sounds of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe with Harvard alumni during travels in spring, 2015. The G. Gordon Watts Professor of Music and Professor of African and African American studies, Shelemay is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and past President of the Society for Ethnomusicology. She has authored and edited numerous monographs and is currently writing two books about musicians in the new global diaspora emerging from Africa s Horn. Her books and articles, which have been supported by fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council for Learned Societies, the Radcliffe Institute and other agencies, have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian and Hebrew. Before joining the Harvard faculty in 1992, Shelemay taught at Columbia University, where she received an award for distinguished teaching (1982), at New York University, and at Wesleyan University. In 2006, she received both Harvard s Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Prize and the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize, and, in 2014, the GSAS Everett L. Mendelsohn Excellence in Mentoring Award. Shelemay was named the national Phi Beta Kappa/Frank M. Updike Memorial Scholar for the 2010-2011 academic year and was from 1999 2013 a Congressional appointee to and chair of the Board of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
