UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING SCHOOL OF BUILT ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT OF REALESTATE AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT BACHELOR OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT BCM413: INTEGRATTED DESIGN STUDIO IKENYE ANNE NYAMBURA B76/3605/2011 CLIENT UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 1
DESIGN BRIEF FOR A HOTEL IN THE ALUMNI CENTRE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI INTRODUCTION The alumni centre is to be situated at a serene location where the University of Nairobi s UNES and Arziki Café today stands. The University of Nairobi donated this 2 acre piece of land to facilitate the construction of the Alumni centre. It faces the state house road from which the site is accessed and other views include apartment building on the lower side, residential houses to its left and right and from a higher point one is able to the city centre and the fields of the University. It is at a walking distance from the University. One can also walk to the arboretum park for an afternoon of relaxing. This area is quite a prominent area as it is near the State House. The area is near to quite a number of amenities such as schools, clinic and parks and not to mention the easy access to the city centre where one can get virtually anything they would need. The current structures on site will be demolished as they would not blend in well with the modern structure to be put up on that site. However the site already has water, sewerage, electricity and data connections hence making it easier and cheaper to incorporate these services into the new structure. REQUIREMENTS I am required to design a four star hotel with dining facilities for buffet, ala carte, vegetarian, vegan and light meals and drinks. Attached to the restaurant will be an Alumni Pub for afternoon, weekend drinks and parties. Regular and deluxe guest rooms to accommodate out of town guests and alumni. They should be 50 in number and a presidential suite is inevitable. A banqueting area should also be included. The Alumni centre hotel will be a modern design that will cater for the alumni of the prestigious University of Nairobi and the area community. It will feature top notch facilities, personalized hospitality and a variety of restaurant services to cater for all. KEY DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS The way that the building design elements are brought together will provide the outward expression of the building to the area. The finesse and skill used in balancing the appearance of the architectural design will be critical to its success, how well it is regarded and its fit into the area. Composition should seek to marry the interplay of the functionality of the building, sustainability issues, the quality of internal space and the fit into the townscape. Composition should reflect the role of the 2
building in the town. This should be achieved with quality. The alumni centre will aim to perform a more landmark role. Larger openings into the elevations to create a more light and airy internal environment and increase passive solar gain will be incorporated into the design. CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS KEY CONSIDERATIONS Materials for the construction and finishes of the building should ideally be sourced locally from sustainable sources. Local stone will be used as well as lots of glass. Hi spec finishes will be incorporated. Externally, wall cladding panels will be used together with structural glass. Color to be agreed as part of the overall design composition. Pebble finishes may as well be incorporated externally on landscaping and internally around the fire places and wellness centre. After demolition where possible, useable materials from the site should be reused. Use of Structural glass Use of external wall cladding 3
