PRESIDENTS REPORT We are already a month into 2017 I trust everyone had a pleasant festive season and are now getting back to normality and looking forward to some, hopefully, settled weather. I am pleased to report that work has started on the strengthening of the upstairs level. Original estimate was that the work would take seven/eight weeks to complete but they are possibly running a bit behind. This is the last stage to bring the building up to the required 67% of Building Code which is an excellent result as all commercial buildings must achieve this result and the longer you leave it the costlier it will get. The first floor including the Rex Mahood lounge and the stairs will get new carpet laid at the conclusion of the construction work. The Club is holding a Members Draw (see the back of this newsletter for more details) for 3 separate draws of $500.00,(we will keep drawing Membership numbers until each draw is won) on Friday 17 th February, we expect a good turnout of Members and as usual will be having raffles, both meat and money, and the draws will be followed by live entertainment from the duo Smooth Talk. Maurice Nutira, President, KWMC

Judging for the Kaiapoi Garden Competition will take place on February 1 st and the Club s garden is entered in the Commercial section of this competition. Good luck and thank you to all Members & helpers who have worked in the Club gardens, without the daily watering and care that the members take care of, the Club garden would not be as eye catching and beautiful as it is. SHOOTING SECTION The annual section Christmas shoot was held at our Ferry Road clubrooms on 11 th December. We had a good turnout of members and their families who enjoyed a great days shooting on a lovely day. A delicious spit roast was an added attraction. The Christmas shoot is renowned for having great meat prizes and this shoot was no exception. To add variety to the shoot targets of six different colours were added to the mix of the usual orange targets. They were ejected randomly and associated with each target was one of 50 prizes from a total prize pool worth $2500 donated by local businesses. The prizes linked to any missed targets were transferred to a spot prize draw at the end of the shoot. We wish to thank our sponsors and organisers for contributing to a very successful day. The refurbishment of the Clubrooms is coming along well. Five working bees have been held with a great turnout of members at each. The new roof is on, walls re-clad, rubbish removed, walls inside the veranda painted, electronic cables buried underground and a fence has been erected between the generator shed & the toilet block. Special thanks to Marie and David Hancox for their donation of the generator shed. Membership is steady with new members replacing those who have moved on due to other commitments. Contributed by Brian Smart (President) & Kathryn Gibson (Committee) TRAVEL SECTION It has been a busy few months since the last newsletter. Planning for the 8 day trip down south from 2nd to 9th April is well under way. There are still a few seats available. In October we had a day trip to Arthur s Pass. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us. A stop over in Springfield had to be bypassed because of torrential rain and a visit to Castle Hill became just a drive through. Arthur s Pass was not much better and most remained in the café and had a coffee and got entertained by a couple of keas, although a few hardy souls did wander off across the road. Lunch was at the Bealey Hotel and fortunately by the time lunch was finished the weather cleared slightly and we all managed to get a whiff of the mountain air. We then returned to Kaiapoi via the Waimak Gorge. Our Christmas function this year was a lunch at the Oxford Working Man s Club. Trudy and the staff at Oxford did us proud. The meal and the music by I Alone was excellent and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Stan Lamplugh (Travel Section President) with Trudi Marshall (Oxford Club Manager) February 22nd we are off to Hanmer for the day. It is basically a free day whereby members are responsible their own lunch and their own activities for the day. No doubt some will spend the day relaxing in the pools, while others may wish for something more strenuous. Due to the 8 day trip in April nothing is planned for March. For information on future trips check notice board next to raffle room or contact a committee member. We are also keen to get new ideas for future trips, so if you have any suggestions please jot something down and hand to a committee member.
