The city of Arequipa lies on a fertile valley at the base of the Misti Volcano and is known as the White City for the sillar stone with which most of its colonial mansions and churches are built. The mixture of history, colonial architecture and natural landscapes convert the city into a unique destination. The city excursion will take you to the Main Square or Plaza de Armas, the Town Hall and the Cathedral. You will then proceed to visit Santa Catalina Monastery, the most important and impressive religious monument in Peru. It was built in 1579. Afterwards transfer to the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries to see the mummified remains of Juanita, the ice princess of Ampato, discovered in September of 1995 by anthropologist John Reinhardt at the skirts of Ampato Volcano (20,932 ft.). This girl was sacrificed as an offering for the Apus (the Gods of the mountains) more than 500 years ago. For being so well preserved the mummy astonished scientists. Spend the night at your hotel at Arequipa. Private sightseeing through the city of Arequipa. (Alternatives available: City, Juanita mummy & Santa Teresa Convent; Santa Catalina Convent & Molino de Sabandia; City, Recoleta & Casa del Moral ; City & Santa Catalina Convent, City & Juanita mummy or Campiña, Molino de Sabandia & Founders Mansion.

Southern Peru 7 DAY 02 AREQUIPA/COLCA VALLEY (11800 ft. - 3600 m.a.s.l.) After your breakfast at the hotel your guide will pick you up. At departure from Arequipa as altitude gradually increases, you will see the landscape and vegetation transforming from an arid scrubland covered by abundant cactus to the barren Puna highlands. You will drive through the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca where you will see herds of vicuñas grazing on the plains. Here you will have the best chance to get a closer view of these animals and a unique opportunity to take pictures. A bit further you will have the chance to see birds like flamingoes, ibis, Andean goose, ducks, Andean eagle "Cara Cara" and witness views such as the volcanoes and snow covered mountains in Patapampa (15,000ft.). See the Ampato, Sabancaya and Walca Walca mountains. You will arrive in the town of Chivay (Approximate time of travel: 4 hours) and be transported to your hotel. Enjoy the hotel s natural outdoor hot springs after lunch. Dinner at the hotel. Spend the night at your hotel in Colca Valley.

Southern Peru 8 DAY 03 COLCA VALLEY Early wake up and after breakfast visit to the "Condor Cross" lookout point, a unique place to observe condors from such a close distance soaring on their incredible wingspans above the depths of the canyon below. It stands at 3,000 ft (910 meters) above the river and 7,896 ft.(2400 meters) below the top of the cliff faces. Although the condor is present throughout all the Andes, at the Colca Canyon the rising winds are strong and condors take advantage of these winds to soar gracefully into the sky. The white plumage of its wingspans and flanks can be fully appreciated with this view. For many years, there was a raging controversy over whether or not this was the world s deepest canyon at about 10,470 ft (3180 meters), but it has recently drawn in as a close second to the neighboring Cotahuasi Canyon which is 535 ft. (163 meters) deeper. Continue the excursion to visit the town of Cabanoconde and its corn fields. On your way back visit the picturesque towns of Pinchollo, Achoma, and Yanque, and the lookout at Antahuilque. Lunch and dinner at the hotel. Spend the night at your hotel at Colca Valley.

Southern Peru 9 DAY 04 COLCA VALLEY/LAKE TITICACA (12502 ft 3800 m.a.s.l.) After breakfast begin your private journey to the city of Puno. (Approximately 6 hours). Enjoy the trip along the right margin of the canyon and visit the picturesque town of Coporaque. Have an early lunch at Chivay, a small town at the end of the Valley, and begin your journey to Puno city. Then you will be transported to Titilaka Hotel. (Approximate time: 1 hour). The city of Puno, an important commercial port, is located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, rich in flora and fauna. It is considered the cradle of the legendary Aymara people and the pre-columbian culture of Tiahuanaco. It has more than 250 typical colorful dances which represent characters of their local legends. You will be welcomed by our Guest Services Representative and assisted during check in. We recommend you to have a siesta, take it easy and drink plenty of liquids in order to get used to the altitude. Dinner is served in the main dining room. Then you may enjoy appointed suite or join other guests and interpreters to talk about your highlands experience. Dinner and overnight at Titilaka.

(Alternatives include: Uros floating islands, Sillustani, Mountain biking or 7 activities near the Hotel). Upon your arrival to the hotel enjoy the intense dusk. Later this idyllic sunset is rivaled by a pristine starry night. Enjoy cocktails, dinner and overnight at your lakeview room at Titilaka. Taquile Island is considered the most interesting island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. The Taquile people are of Quechua origin, as opposed to the majority of the region s locals who are of Aymara origin. You will visit the home and greet the family of Juan, one of the prominent weavers on the island. They will share with you the rich traditions and social structure of Taquile and show you their textiles. You may also visit some archaeological remains of the Inca empire. Here you can also view the impressive panorama of Lake Titicaca and the snow covered mountains of Cordillera Real. Rowing through the Reeds Take a paddle boat excursion through the totora reeds near the hotel. You will learn about the totora reeds, aquatic plants and how they are used by the locals for different purposes ranging from construction to food. Similar to landownership, the reed marshes are divided among the villagers, who every so often harvest them for various uses. The reeds offer a unique ecosystem for birds such as wrens, grebes, moorhens and egrets.

Southern Peru 11 DAY 06 LAKE TITICACA/CUSCO/SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS (9000 ft. 2735 m.a.s.l.) After breakfast you will be transported to Juliaca airport where you will be assisted by our Guest Services Representative prior to your flight to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco Airport you will be welcomed by our Guest Services Representative and transferred to a restaurant, located near the Main Square; it offers its guests a wide variety of Italian, pasta and grill dishes. After lunch, you will be transferred to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The Sacred Valley is an excellent place to begin your visit to Cusco. The Sacred Valley has a moderate altitude, pleasant climate, and picturesque villages. It offers a great opportunity to explore Inca sites, local artisan markets and to do some adventure hiking or rafting. Excursion to Pisac Ruins and its Traditional Market. The small Main Square is filled wall-to-wall with stalls selling the full range of Peruvian handicrafts: alpaca sweaters and mittens, carved gourds, ceramics, felt hats, musical instruments, paintings, antiques, trinkets, jewelry and most of all weavings. Visit the mountaintop complex including overlooks, terraces and the main temple, next to the town of Pisac. It is known for its small, polished stones that fit perfectly together. It is on a vantage point over the flat plains of Urubamba, above a hill. In order to visit these ruins you have to walk through a path which snakes its way along the hillsides east of the Sacred Valley. Among the most important buildings in the area are Pisaca, which is a fine curving wall, the Intihuatana group of temples and the military area, called Q Allaqasa. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Southern Peru 12 DAY 07 SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS Excursion to Chinchero, Nilda and Maras & Moray(Alternatives available: Chinchero and Nilda, Pisac Ruins, Pisac Market, Pisac Ruins & Market, Ollantaytambo, Maras & Moray, Pisac Market & Ollantaytambo, Pisac Ruins & Ollantaytambo, Chinchero & Ollantaytambo, Pisac Ruins & Market & Ollantaytambo, Full day River Rafting or Half Day Mountain Bike). After breakfast visit Chinchero, a small Andean village, located high up on the windswept plains of Anta (12,340 ft. 3750 m.a.s.l.), about 18 miles (30 km) from Cusco. (Approximate time of travel: 45 minutes). Surrounded by dramatic views, you will find the village of Chincheros which overlooks the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Cordillera Vilcabamba and the snow-capped peak of Salcantay. Chinchero means the birthplace of the rainbow in Quechua. Visit Inca ruins, a typical Andean village and a colonial church. The keen photographer should be on the lookout for dramatic mountain landscapes and bright colors from the traditional markets. Afterwards, you visit Nilda Callañaupa Textile Center famous for the handmade textiles. Witness a live demonstration in the ancient art of weaving. Enjoy a gourmet outdoor picnic lunch. Continue your excursion through the sites of Maras and Moray. First, stop at the ancient salt mines, nearby the town of Maras, which may be glanced from an old chapel just above it. Later, visit the huge circular agricultural terraces at Moray. It has been suggested that they have a cosmological meaning. The Incas however are thought to have used them as a kind of crop laboratory to determine the optimal conditions of planting each species. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Sacred Valley.

Southern Peru 13 DAY 08 SACRED VALLEY /MACHUPICCHU (8000 ft. 2430 m.a.s.l.) After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to Ollantaytambo Train Station (Approximate time of travel: 30 minutes). En route you will visit Ollantaytambo (8800 ft. 2675 m.a.s.l.), the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the Americas. It demonstrates the best surviving example of Inca city planning. This Inca fortress with its extremely well built walls was also a temple. The temple area is at the top of steep terracing, which helped to provide excellent defenses. The stones for Ollantaytambo were taken from a nearby quarry on the mountainside on the opposite bank of the river - an incredible feat involving the efforts of thousands of workers. For guests staying at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo: You have the evening at leisure to relax or enjoy some of the hotel s most charming attractions. This includes the reading room, scores of pre-columbian artefacts in the main dining room and the lounge s crackling fireplaces. If you wish to pamper yourself, unwind in the Andean sauna, an igloo made from indigenous bamboo and fresh eucalyptus leaves. Additionally, you may want to take part in one of the many suggested excursions. This includes a birdwatching walk, a nature trail, a twilight walk, an orchid tour, organic tea processing and evening nature shows. Dinner a la carte at the Main Restaurant. Overnight at your hotel in Machu Picchu. Located nearby the gates to the fortress, CATCCO Museum and Cultural Center of Ollantaytambo promotes traditional culture and technology within the district of Ollantaytambo. It has a Museum Shop with textile and ceramic products from the surrounding communities. Board the train to Machu Picchu. The Vistadome service includes carriages with panoramic windows which enhance the scenic view. During the journey a light snack is provided. (Approximate time of travel by train: 1 hour, 30 minutes). Southern Peru 16 DAY 11 CUSCO / AMAZON RAINFOREST (2000 ft 600 m.a.s.l.)
