Climate and clothing. How cold is it? Preferably bring three layers: 1) thermal underwear 2) sweater and trousers 3) jacket and/or wind shell. Additionally, we provide sailing suits, an overall suitable to keep you warm up on deck and during zodiac tours. Temperature ranges from 2-12 degrees Celsius, with wind and precipitation low. The average day is calm and dry, with strong sun. The weather gets more unpredictable the closer it gets to September. To get started, check out photographs from previous tours on North Sailing Flickr page and see what people are wearing.
Other recommended items? Bathing suits, rubber boots, sunscreen and a water bottle are useful belongings but nonessential. Cash is preferred to pay for the drinks on board and for purchases in the local souvenir shop: Euros, Dollars, Icelandic Krona or Danish Krona. In both cases, however, large amounts can be settled with a credit card. Will I get seasick? Seasickness is highly unlikely during the tour. The area is generally very calm and the fjords we sail in act as a natural harbor, keeping out the swell from the open ocean. Is there a cell phone signal? Scoresby Sund is off the grid. Only the airport and the town of Ittoqqortoormiit are within cell phone service. There is an emergency satellite phone and email in emergencies. Can I charge batteries on board? Camera batteries and other small chargeable can be plugged on board. The boat has European plug-ins. Guidelines for good practices Visiting what is arguably the remotest community on Earth, we appreciate that you honor these guidelines. Besides cruise ships, North Sailing is the only touring company to visit Ittoqqortoormiit and Scoresby Sund regularly. Responsible tourism is our mission.
For nature walks and hikes: There are no harbours. All landings are made on a zodiac. The guide will walk you through how to get on the zodiac from the schooner. Everyone must have a life west during these transportations. The leader for each walking/hiking group (sometimes there are more than one group) carries a rifle. Before going over a hill, the group leader goes ahead to make sure a polar bear or muskox herds do not lie ahead. This is an important safety precaution. Do not put everyone at risk by going solo. If we go about this the right way, we can minimize the odds of ever having to shoot wild mammals. During hikes, we might stumble upon muskox skulls. The skulls are collected by locals to be used for decoration, sold or used for talisman carving. If you find a muskox skull in a reasonable shape, either leave it for next hiking group s perusal or bring it to the local carving artist in Ittoqqortoormiit. Old Inuit remains are left there for a reason. Please don t remove. Caribou bones are at least one hundred years old, although they look much more recent due to the cold climate. Please don t remove. For the town of Ittoqqortoormiit: More people trek the North Pole than visit Ittoqqortoormiit. It is by no means a tourist town where locals are used to being photographed. Please ask permission before snapping someone s picture. Ittoqqortoormiit is a town of 437 people and 250 dogs. Dogs on a leash are full grown sled dogs not pets wild enough to kill each other. A dog that bites has to be put down. If the owner does not know which one is to fault, he has to put down the entire herd. That said, dogs that are not on a leash are still puppies, friendly and free to pet. Please don t give candy, money or other handouts to children. It s just not the kind of relationship we wish to promote.
