ITINERARY DAY 1: CAIRO Arrival in Cairo and transfer to your hotel. DAY 2: CAIRO To the south-east of Cairo extends a line some 70km long with over 80 pyramids built on it. Today you head out to see the most famous and the most spectacular at Giza and Saqqara. DAY 3: CAIRO The centre of Cairo is a chaotic and noisy area, the medieval city was begun by Saladin and here you will visit the Citadel, enclosed by medieval walls and the busy market of Khan el Khalili. Visit also Old Cairo, with its Roman fortifications, Coptic churches and the Hanging Church. (B) DAY 4: CAIRO - MINYA Today drive 250km south of Cairo to the town of Minya lying on the West bank of the Nile. Nearby is Beni Hassan, here you find a necropolis of 39 rock tombs dating from around 1800-2100BC decorated with exceptional paintings. (B) DAY 5: MINYA - ASSIUT Visit historic sites including Hermopolis, set in palm groves and home to a 5th century Christian basilica before visiting the ancient capital of Amarna, a large plateau with the remains of the temples, houses and palaces sketched out on it and a necropolis in the cliffs. (B) DAY 6: ASSIUT - LUXOR The temple of Abydos was once one of the most sacred places in Egypt, visit the temple here where the head of Osiris was once buried before continuing on to the Ptolemaic Temple of Dendera and finally on to Luxor. DAY 7: LUXOR Today a leisurely day sees you visit Karnak, the largest temple in Egypt and the Luxor Temple itself which is right in the heart of the busy east bank town. The rest of the day is free for you to stroll the town and visit the bazaar. (B) DAY 8: LUXOR Head off very early this morning over to the west bank of the Nile to explore the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Hatshepsut's Temple and the Colossi of Memnon. Around noon return to your Hotel and the rest of day is at leisure. This evening there is an optional excursion to the Sound and Light Show at Karnak Temple. (B) DAY 9: LUXOR - ASWAN Drive from Luxor to Aswan, stopping on the way at Horus Temple at Edfu, one of the best preserved in the country and the Temple of Kom Ombo; dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, it stands imposingly on the banks of the Nile. (B) DAY 10: ASWAN Today drive out to the granite quarries and see the huge unfinished obelisk, the Aswan High Dam and beautiful Philae temple, set on an island in the Nile. In the evening there is an optional excursion to the Sound and Light Show at Philae Temple. (B) DAY 11: ASWAN This morning there is an optional excursion to Abu Simbel, either by bus or by flight. In Abu Simbel see the fantastic temple of Rameses II with its huge colossi and the Temple of Nefertari, moved to protect it from the waters of Lake Nasser. This afternoon sail by felucca to the Botanical Gardens on Lord Kitchener's island. (B) DAY 12: ASWAN Transfer to the Airport for your return. (B)
