Pine Mountain Lake Aviation Meeting Volume 32: Issue 10 November 2017 A Publication of the Pine Mountain Lake Aviation Association HOLIDAY PARTY! Saturday, December 2 6:00 pm McGowan Hangar PARTY TIME!! The annual holiday party for Pine Mountain Lake Aviation Association is coming soon. An invitation will be coming to YOU in the U.S. mail. Please watch for it. Also included will be the renewal application for 2018. If you renew before the end of 2017, renewal cost is $20. If you wait, it goes up to $25 for the year. www.pmlaa.org 1

President s Letter by Bonnie Ritchie Big thanks to our speakers this month, Marle Hewett, Wayne Handley and Ed Peters and to all our Veterans. As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday I have a lot of PMLAA volunteers to be thankful for. First of all, I am so thankful we have been able to use the McGowen hangar all year. Thanks also to two key folks who are retiring from their positions at the end of this year: Karen Appleby who has been managing our member roster for the past five years and Ken Helling who has managed Display Day. Thanks to Phil Hickerson for his A/V support and Ed Peters for logistics. There are so many more people who help with setup and teardown each week, sell 50/50 raffle tickets, clean the tablecloths and volunteer so much time and energy to make all our events so fun. I hope to see you all at the Holiday Party in December! Party Party Party Party Party - Party PMLAA Scholarship Awarded to Joshua Skelley Josh Skelley of Groveland was awarded $500 PMLAA Scholarship toward college tuition. He is a senior at Tioga High School. Josh wants to learn everything about aviation, how to build and fly airplanes. His goal is to get a B.A. in aeronautics and get his pilot s license, then to fly commercial, cargo, or join the Air Force. Josh was sponsored by Steve and Sandy DeRodeff. He plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona and the scholarship money will be paid directly to the university. PMLAA has awarded three scholarships in 2017. T.J. Moyle of Sonora was awarded a PMLAA Scholarship in Q2 for ground school. Clint Cargile of Pacific Grove received the Q3 award for ground school. PMLAA Scholarships are awarded quarterly to qualified applicants seeking assistance with educational interests in aviation or STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Applicants must be sponsored by a PMLAA member, but do not need to be a PMLAA member. Applicants can be of any age. Preference is given to locals, but that is a guideline not a requirement. Amounts vary up to $500. See any PMLAA Board member for details. www.pmlaa.org 2

Where the Money Goes by Janet Gregory Have you ever wondered where the PMLAA money goes? First, PMLAA is a social club (501 c7 in IRS terminology) and more than half (56%) of our spending goes to support the monthly meetings (food, bar, entertainment, and meeting supplies). Next, PMLAA exists to promote aviation interests and that accounts for about a third of our spending (Airport Day, Airport Display Day, volunteer projects, and scholarships). The remainder goes for administrative support (supplies, storage, and postage). PMLAA is a not-for-profit organization, so our aim is to break even each year. Our income comes from contributions you make at our monthly meetings (60%), dues (21%), and PMLAA activities (18%). Dues have not increased in over than ten years and will be going from $20/year to $25/year in 2018. Still a bargain! Get your 2018 membership in before 12/31/2017 and it s still only $20 per family membership! Thank you for the opportunity to be the PMLAA Treasurer in 2016 and 2017. One contribution I am pleased to have made to PMLAA during my tenure as your Treasurer was to establish our tax status with the IRS and State of California without penalty. Each PMLAA Board position can only hold office for two years, so I am retiring at the end of this year, handing the role to Greg Triplett. Thanks for a Great EAA Year by Ed Gregory Our local EAA Chapter 1337 partners with PMLAA to bring aviation to life in Pine Mountain Lake (E45), Groveland, Columbia (O22), and Sonora. 2017 was a great year for all of us. Thanks to everyone for their participation and support. Young Eagles at E45 in September and O22 in April flew 72 kids and 6 adults (bald eagles) E45 Beautification got the VASIs painted (Leon L & Ed G), taxiway markings painted (Allen C, Leon L & Ed G), visitor parking Ts painted (Allen C), and the wind T painted (Wayne H) E45 Service Improvements got the oil dump cleaned (Mike G), the airport office locked and cleaned (County), and relocate tie-downs to make fuel island more accessible (County) Fly Out to McClellan Airport (MCC) Museum for the amazing DaVinci exhibit (Mike G) AOPA Rusty Pilot Seminar in May had 45 rusty and not-so-rusty pilots attend. Combined effort of PML Aero Club (Bob H s idea), PMLAA, and EAA Event Support for Columbia s Father s Day Fly-In and PML Airport Day (everyone!) We have a vibrant and active aviation community. Thank you to everyone for pitching in to keep our airport safe, well maintained, and fun. The EAA Chapter 1337 Board is Ed Gregory (Pres), Rob Compton (VP), Allen Craig (Treas), Mike Gustafson (Sec y), and Directors: Wayne Handley, Leon Liebster and Ed Sunday. Please join us as a member or a willing participant, we welcome all your support. www.pmlaa.org 3

Social Corner by Danielle Coelho Next month is our Holiday Party. Seating is limited so be sure to send in for tickets as soon as you get the party invite in the mail. There will be dancing to Homegrown, a local, favorite band. Tickets are $28 for members, $35 for guests. We will be accepting unwrapped toys or gifts for children at the party.
