Dear Collectors Welcome to our first edition of the Australian Stamp Bulletin for 2012 after a very busy close to the previous year. I m sure you all made the most of the Christmas break, as I did. Before we take a closer look at the first stamp issues for the year I would like to revisit November 2011 and the release of the ANZUS stamp issue. This commemorative stamp was produced to recognise the very significant visit to Australia by the Honourable Barack Obama, President of the United States of America. An official state visit by the President had been planned for some time but was cancelled on two previous occasions due to issues of state. The uncertainty made plans to commemorate the visit extremely difficult given the print timelines of both the Bulletin, and more importantly, the 2011 Annual Collection of Australian Stamps. The decision for the visit to occur in mid-november was to affect the timing of both publications, which had already been printed. Philatelic would release the commemorative stamp issue without having a sample included in the Annual Collection but this historic event was too important and needed to be recognised officially. The stamp will be included with the 2012 Annual Collection of Australian Stamps. Looking ahead to the coming stamp issues there is quite a variety of themes, including our 2012 Lunar New Year stamp issue. We anticipate a high level of interest in the stamps this year as we celebrate the Year of the Dragon. This year s Australian Legends stamp issue will celebrate the achievements of sporting heroes from the different football codes in Australia. What collectors won t know until the issue is released in January is the identity of those selected for this honour. Capital City Transport, Farming, Technology Then and Now and a range of new stamp designs for use with social mail in Precious Moments offers a diverse range of subjects and design styles. There s really something for everyone. We also bring you the results of the Stamp Poll from 2011 and the opportunity to settle those debates that I m sure collectors just love to have regarding the favourite stamp and stamp issue of the year. The poll covered the gummed stamps featured in our voting entry form and the online entry page. Happy Collecting Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

10 January 2012 Lunar New Year - Year of the Dragon 60c Illustrative dragon $1.80 Chinese symbol for Dragon 1713142 Minisheet The stamps show the development of the Chinese character for the Dragon, shown fully in the $1.80 stamp, and the way it is derived from its pictorial representation, shown in the 60c stamp. Paper cut motifs are used to represent the Dragon in the 60c stamp. Paper cuts are one of the most popular forms of Chinese art and are commonly used to decorate windows, lanterns, mirrors, gates and walls during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The Dragon occupies a special place in the Chinese zodiac, being the only mythical creature among them. This is the perfect keepsake for babies born in the Year of the Dragon. Lunar New Year - Year of the Dragon 10 January 2012 1713252 First day cover (zodiac) 1713013 First day cover (minisheet) The miniature sheet tells the story (in Chinese and English) about the helpful, soft-hearted Dragon who, although expected to win the race because he could fly, only came fifth because he stopped during the race to create rain to break a severe drought and then aided the rabbit, a fellow competitor, by gently blowing him across the river on a raft. There is a special gold foil overprinting on the stamps, minisheet and zodiac sheetlet. 1713005 Blank cover Issue highlights This is the fifth Lunar New Year stamp issue in the cycle from designer Dani Poon. Legends 2012 Who will be the Australian Legends for 2012? The Australia Post Australian Legends Award stamp series has become a collection in its own right. Since 1997 Australia Post has honoured eminent Australians as part of the Australia Day celebrations. The Legends stamp issue will be released on 20 January 2012.

16 November 2011 ANZUS 60c ANZUS 1710002 First day cover (gummed) This stamp issue was released late in the 2011 program to commemorate the State Visit to Australia of the Honourable Barack Obama, President of the United States of America. During his visit from 16 17 November, President Obama visited Canberra, where he addressed Parliament, and became the first sitting US President to visit Darwin. This final gummed stamp in the Australian program was not included in the November edition of the Stamp Bulletin or the 2011 Annual Collection of Australian Stamps due to the time restraints in the production of both publications and the late notice of the announcement of the State Visit. Australia and the United States enjoy a strong partnership in many areas including trade and investment, science and technology collaboration and security cooperation. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Australia-United States Alliance under the ANZUS Treaty, which was signed by Australia, New Zealand and the United States in San Francisco in 1951 and entered into force in 1952. 1710220 Maxicard Technical details Issue date 18 November 2011 FDI withdrawal date 13 January 2012 (extended) Denomination 1 x 60c Stamp and product design Jo Muré, Australia Post Design Studio Printer RA Print Paper Tullis Russell Printing process Lithography Stamp size 37.5mm x 26mm Perforations 13.86 x 14.6 Sheet layout Sheetlet of 10 National postmark Canberra, ACT 2600 The stamp shows the military representatives of the ANZUS countries gathered in Honolulu for the first meeting in 1952: Lieutenant-General SF (Sydney) Rowell (left), Australian Chief of General Staff, is greeted on his arrival at the airfield by Admiral Arthur Radford, US Commander in Chief Pacific (right), and Major-General Gentry, New Zealand Chief of General Staff. 1710130 Stamp pack

7 February 2012 Technology Then and Now 60c Telephone 60c Refrigerator 60c Television 60c Music 60c Navigation Issue highlights This issue features a very different layout in the minisheet design. There s also a design in the gutter. The technological revolution of the 21st century has touched the daily lives of most Australians. Mobile phones have revolutionised our daily communication. Unlike fixed-line phones, today s 4G phones can provide a myriad of functions including internet, video and audio, enabling us to be connected globally. The modern refrigerator can be equipped with entertainment devices such as a high-definition LCD screen and FM radio. This is a far cry from the ice chest which kept food cool, through insulation rather than electricity, and relied on the ice man for deliveries of ice. Public television was introduced to Australia for the 1956 Olympic Games. Early units were relatively small and 1716241 Gutter 1716220 Maxicard set of five

Today s flat-screen television sets are much thinner but have enormous screens compared to early units, and increasingly, transmissions are digital rather than analogue. It is now common to have several TV sets per household and transmission is 24 hours a day. 1716002 First day cover (gummed) Not so long ago listening to music involved placing a vinyl record on a turntable.
