2018 Deluxe Tour of Scotland Personally Conducted By Jeff Robertson, Native of Scotland and proprietor of Caledonia Fine Arts Company Friday August 24 Sunday 2 nd September Come join us for an exciting adventure Tour of Scotland featuring the the Braemar Gathering and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Our Tour starts with a flourish at Edinburgh Castle high atop the city with the performance of the famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a magnificent extravaganza of pipe bands, music, dance and drama, all ending with an exciting fireworks display lighting the night sky above the Castle. What an exciting trip! After a day of sightseeing in Edinburgh, visiting Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, we head north into the highlands exploring castles and stately homes, distillery tour and whisky sampling, viewing wonderful vistas and landscapes, searching Loch Ness for the monster,, tasting local delicacies, shopping in a special Highland Emporium, soaking up the history of Scotland at famous spots such as Culloden Battlefield, all the while staying in four and five star guest houses and hotels. Highlights of your final weekend include the colorful spectacle of the Braemar Gathering. Attended by the queen and members of the Royal Family. Experience the sound of hundreds of bagpipers and drummers playing together in a massed band and the richness of color in the kilts and uniforms. See the Heavy athletes throwing the caber and the highland dancers in competition.

2018 Deluxe Tour of Scotland Daily Itinerary Day 1 You will be personally met at Edinburgh Airport and whisked off in our deluxe mini bus and head straightway to Linlithgow twenty minutes to the west of the airport. Here we check into Bo mains 4 star guest house with sweeping views down to the river Forth. We will have time to relax in this beautiful location after your journey taking in the vistas is refreshing for both the body and the soul. In the afternoon we tour Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queens of Scots. Walkabout in the quaint village of Linlithgow, which was recently voted one of the best small towns in Scotland, and see the sights and shops. A short drive from Linlithgow we visit the Apex Park where you will see the Largest equine statues in the world one Hundred feet high. They are a memorial to the Clydesdale horses that pulled the Barges up and down the canals during the Industial Revolution in Scotland. After a brake in the afternoon we have dinner in Linlithgow and we board the train into Edinburgh to attend the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and return to Bo mains Guest House for the night.

Day 1 Continued After dinner we walk up the cobblestoned Royal Mile to the Promenade of Edinburgh Castle for the spectacular performance of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo The program will include music, action, color and a taste of the unexpected all against the dramatic backdrop of the castle. It will feature performers from all points of the compass including Europe, Far East, United States, Central and South America The finale shown above features the Massed Pipes & Drums, Military Bands, Display Teams, Dancers silently assembled on the Parade Ground. We hear the sounds of a haunting lament of the Lone Piper as he plays atop the castle battlements. Then the performance concludes with a dazzling fireworks display lighting up the night sky high above the city. We return to Bo mains Guest House

Day 2 After our breakfast we start our exciting day with a visit to Stirling Castle, ancient capital of Scotland, and the place where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned. Featured in the castle are The Great Hall, the Palace Vaults and the Regimental Museum of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. After the tour of the castle we drive a short distance and have lunch in the restaurant of the largest antique center in Scotland. You will have the opportunity to see many historic and unique items. It is a very interesting experience. We will visit the quaint village of South Queensferry where we will enjoy the view of the famous River Forth Railway Bridge. When built in 1890 it was considered to be one of the Great Wonders of the Modern World. From the same vantage point you will see the new Road Bridge just finished and opened by the Queen last year.

Day 3 Early breakfast and we hop on board a train from Linlithgow which takes us into the heart of Edinburgh and Waverly Station. Walking out of the train station we will behold the magnificent architecture of the city. On our day in Edinburgh we will visit many of the major historical attractions. Edinburgh Castle Our first stop will be the ancient and historic Edinburgh Castle where you will see the Scottish Crown Jewels, Stone of Destiny, the Royal Chapel, the Scottish War Museum and the Royal Chambers where Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI of Scotland. We will have opportunities to see museums, galleries, points of interest and shopping on the Royal Mile. After our day of touring the city we will have dinner at the famous Deacon Brodies Tavern on the Royal Mile, where we will partake of some of the best food in Edinburgh, including steak & ale pie and MacSweens Haggis. Our day in Edinburgh ends, back on the train to Linlithgow and B mains

Day 4 One of the highlights of our tour is Rosslyn Chapel connected to the order of the Knights Templar and featured in the movie the Da Vinci Code. The tour guide gives us a very in depth talk about the history of the Chapel. You have all seen the beautiful kilts worn by proud Scotsmen. Well today we are going to visit Lochcarron Mills, the largest producer of tartan in Scotland. Here we will take a tour of the mill to see how tartan is woven and also visit their splendid showroom. Heading south into the borders our next stop is Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott. He was the first author to write books that we now refer to as historical novels. He rose to great fame throughout Europe for his immense body of work which included the Waverley Novels. Dinner in the small village of Roslin and back to Bomains for the night

Day 5 Heading north we visit Falkland Palace which was built for King James V for falconry and hunting. This was Mary queen of Scots favorate place and she came here many times. She had a tennis court built for her in the palace and was very fond of the game. St. Andrews, the ancient city and home of golf. While here we will see the Royal and Ancient Club House, and Old Course, which is the mecca for golfers from all over the world. We will also visit the famous Saint Andrews Cathedral founded in 1162 and completed in 1318 to house the relics of Saint Andrew. The cathederal became a major religious center for pilgrims worldwide. Our last port of call for today is The City of Dundee and a visit to the Royal Research Ship Discovery specially built in Dundee for Captain Robert Falcon Scott s Antarctic expedition in 1901. The ship is moored alongside its beautiful new visitors center. We stay the night at the Woodlands Hotel in Broughty Ferry.

Day 6 Continuing on we drive up the coast of the North Sea to Arbroath and see its famous Abbey. The Declaration of Arbroath, which declared Scottish independence from England, was signed by the Lords and Noblemen of Scotland and sent to the Pope in Rome for his approval in 1320. Then we will walk down to the fishing harbor and sample the local delicacy called Arbroath Smokies. They are fresh haddock smoked to perfection in little sheds by the harbor. Continuing on our circular Tour of the County of Angus, we come to Glamis Castle, considered to be the finest example of Baronial architecture in all of Scotland. We take a guided tour of the castle and see the room where Princess Margaret, the present Queens sister, was born. We are spending the rest of the day in Aberfeldy deep in highland Perthshire. The famous Black Watch Regiment was formed here in 1734 and a monument was created to honor them in 1887. We have dinner and stay the night at the Townhouse hotel in Aberfeldy

Day 7 After breakfast we visit Pitlochry which is the quintessential Scottish Victorian town. We will have the opportunity to walk up and down it s beautiful main street which is full of unusual and quaint shops. This a chance to purchase Items that you probable would not find anywhere else! House of Bruar, a wonderful emporium of Scottish foods and wares, sometimes known as The Harrods of the North. Heading further north deep into the highlands we come to the Dalwhinnie distillery where we take their guided tour and sample some of the finest Scotch Whisky available. This distillery is the highest in Scotland at 1000 feet above sea level. Continuing on we visit the famous battlefield of Culloden, where Bonnie Prince Charles fateful campaign came to an end. Their new impressive Visitor Center is extremely well designed and brings us back historically to the time of the battle and in its splendid 4- screen cinema room you feel as if you are in the midst of the battle. During our visit we learn of the historic and political conditions that existed in 1746 that precipitated this famous battle, the last major battle on British soil. Dinner at the Culloden Inn and stay the night at the Daviot Lodge

Day 8 Journeying south we travel through the famous Glencoe, one of the most dramatic landscapes in Scotland. The glen is a magnet for avid hill climbers throughout the year. Our journey then takes us to the West Coast and Eilean Donan Castle,the most photographed castle in all of Scotland. The castle was the Ancestral home of the Clan Macrae. On a promontory jutting out into Loch Ness Urquhart Castle occupies a magnificent view of the loch. The castle was a large structure in it s heyday and held an important strategic position over the loch. Most of the sighting of the monster have occurred close by. Second Night at the Daviot Lodge

Day 9 Today will be a wonderful day out, full of color and music. The massed pipe bands play for the opening ceremony at the famed Royal Braemar Gathering. These games will celebrate their two hundred and three years in existence and promises to be a great experience. The Queen and other members of the royal family attend The Braemar Gathering every year while she is on holiday in Scotland each August. The hammer throw is one of many events entered into by the heavy athletes. This photo shows the tremendous energy required to perform in the Hammer Throw plus Caber tossing of course! Highland dancing has always been a favorite part at the Games. And here you see some bonnie Lasses strutting their stuff. We return to Linlithgow for dinner and spend our last night at Bomains Guest House

Day 10 After a good night s sleep and our full Scottish breakfast we transport you to Edinburgh Airport for your flight home. It s time to bid a fond farewell to Bonnie Scotland and we hope that you have enjoyed every moment and have had the experience of a lifetime. Haste ye back!
