INFO PACK 1

INTRODUCTION Inside Dear Junior Branch world, We are glad to present you IJBC 2017 which will take place in Portugal from August 1st to August 6th. The International Junior Representatives (IJRs) and CISV Portugal are very excited for this conference and we hope you are too! Like in 2016 in Colombia, IJBC will happen on its own, before Global Conference 2018. It will be a place for all of us to share our experiences, ideas and thoughts on Junior Branch today and innovate to build our Junior Branch for tomorrow. We hope that all JBers participating and following the Conference around the world will take this great opportunity to creatively challenge and strengthen Junior Branch, CISV and will contribute to moving our organisation forward. In this year marking the end of the 2015-2017 JB Review Team mandate, it is even more important that JBers can share their voice and have an impact as CISVers. This Info Pack includes first elements of what you can expect from IJBC 2017 in terms of camp site, transportation, logistics, applications, costs and deadlines. There will be another Info Pack with more information about the content of the meeting, the team of facilitators and other final details. If you have any questions regarding logistics, feel free to contact the Home Staff Team at ijbc2017@pt.cisv.org. For other questions, please contact the IJRs at ijr@cisv.org. Looking forward to seeing you all at IJBC 2017! Gaspard & Flora IJRs 2016-2017

DESTINATION FACTS Lisboa The capital city and physically the largest city in Portugal, Lisbon consists of a central municipality that is home to just over 550 000 people. It stands today as the economic, historical and cultural nucleus of the country and is generally considered the most desirable city in which to live in Portugal. It lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The rich architecture that marks the city is a reflection of Lisbon s long and rich history, which began over 1 000 years before Roman rule. It went through periods of Germanic and Moorish influence, as well as recapture by the Crusaders, and this colorful past is mirrored by the Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Traditional Portuguese, Modern and Post-Modern constructions that can be found all over. More impressive still is the fact that some of the sites still standing today survived an earthquake that hit the city in the mid-18th century. In more recent years, Lisbon was named European Capital of Culture (1994), hosted Expo 98 and the 2004 European Football Championship and in 2007 welcomed world leaders for the historic signing of the Treaty of Lisbon forming the constitutional basis of the European Union. Today Lisbon is home to an increasingly cosmopolitan and young population who are attracted by the warm Portuguese welcome, the temperate climate and the vast array of cultural opportunities offered by this truly global city.

DESTINATION FACTS Portugal Portugal is the oldest country in Europe Portugal has had the same defined borders since 1143, making it the oldest nation-state in Europe. Afonso Henriques was proclaimed the first King of Portugal in 1139 and the country remained a kingdom for almost 800 years thereafter, until 1910. Portugal introduced the habit of drinking tea in Britain. The world-famous tea ceremony in England has emerged thanks to Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, who married the King Charles II of England and brought this mode to the court. Portuguese is the eighth most spoken language in the world. With approximately 200 million native speakers and 240 million total speakers, is usually listed as the eighth most spoken language in the world after Mandarin, English, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Russian and Bengali. Portugal is one of the world s top surf spots. In October 2011, Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara caught the biggest wave (30 m / 90 ft) ever surfed to date at Praia do Norte, near the town of Nazaré, in central Portugal. Portugal once had a dead Queen. When Pedro I was crowned King of Portugal in 1357, he proclaimed his lover, Ines de Castro, Queen despite the fact that she had died in 1355

MOSAIC CISV Portugal will organize a Mosaic Project with the ongoing IPP in Lisbon, for the participants coming to IJBC that want to participate! The theme is Bring Back a Community to Life, working with a community which struggles. The activity will happen on the 31st of July in the afternoon. More information to come on the project on the Info-Pack 2. Please note that we can not guarantee accommodation for anyone who wishes to participate. We will be more than happy to help you book any hostels but due to the high amount of camps we host during the summer, hosting families might be difficult to find.
