Scout the Big Five and get spectacular views of the Mara s resident cats who stalk the superabundance of prey. You ll have unparalleled wildlife viewing with the flexibility to schedule each day as you choose with your expert guide. Beyond the Mara, you ll explore the rare wildlife of the Rift Valley s soda lake environments. Traverse Lake Nakuru, where you ll be greeted by gigantic flocks of flamingos, two species of giraffes, and thriving rhino populations. Finally, take in the elephant herds and spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro from Amboseli National Park. Classic Safaris with Deeper Africa It s all about the wildlife. Embark on the classic safari experience: endless wilderness, great guides, spectacular wildlife, and no civilization. We ll get you to the best locations during the right seasons. Learn animal identification, tracking, and spotting skills. Accommodations are comfortable and the food is delicious. Come with us and discover the brilliance and serenity of Africa in the company of experts who can give you a closer look, a richer taste, and a deeper understanding of an astonishing landscape.

DAY 1 OLE SERENI HOTEL NAIROBI Welcome to Kenya. You will arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. A representative from Deeper Africa will be waiting for you after you clear immigration and customs. Look for him holding a sign with your name on it. From there, he will page your Deeper Africa driver who will transport you from the airport to the Ole Sereni Hotel for an evening dinner and overnight stay. Ole Sereni is located in close proximity to both the airport and Nairobi National Park. Enjoy a cocktail on the rooftop deck or a dip in the pool, and you may be treated to views of wildlife off the restaurant patio. Wifi Swimming Pool Ole Sereni Hotel

DAY 2 SATAO ELERAI CAMP AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK Satao Elerai Depart Nairobi and head south for Amboseli National Park. Today and tomorrow you ll meet and learn about the intelligent, sentient elephants that make Amboseli their home. But, Amboseli is gifted with more than just elephants, and this afternoon you ll be able to wildlife view in the plains, acacia woodland, and swamps of Enkongo Narok as soon as you enter the park. The swamps of Enkongo Narok are permanent enough to keep hippo here all year long, and there are plenty of buffalo, giraffe, as well as a profusion of bird life enjoying its waters. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is quite lush in places as the snows from the mountain flow into the park, continually feeding springs and marshes. Nothing beats the thrill of catching your first glimpse of the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro. Swimming Pool Enjoy a packed lunch in the park before arriving in the afternoon at Satao Elerai Camp. Located in the private Elerai Conservancy, the camp is secluded and in the ideal location within Amboseli. Tents are well-appointed and face Kilimanjaro for unparalleled views on clear days. The Elerai Conservancy was created as part of a communal partnership with the local Maasai, the camp, and the African Wildlife Foundation. You can rest easily knowing that proceeds from your visit go towards protecting the wildlife and the people of the conservancy.

DAY 3 SATAO ELERAI CAMP AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK Rise early, as sunrise provides the best views of towering Kilimanjaro in the distance. You will have the full day to explore Amboseli at your leisure, with particular emphasis on tracking and viewing its abundant elephant population. The elephants of Amboseli are unique in that they have led a relatively undisturbed existence in natural conditions. This rare situation is primarily due to two factors the presence of researchers and tourists in the park, and the support of the local Maasai people. In the absence of poaching and culling, the Amboseli elephant population has been increasing slowly since the late 1970 s. Amboseli is one of the few places in Africa where the elephant age structure has not been drastically skewed. Here you can watch newborn calves interacting with wrinkled grandmothers. Swimming Pool Be sure to end the day with views from Observation Hill, a conical volcanic slope rising 100 feet (30 meters) above the plain. With a pair of binoculars in hand, you ll be able to look out and see the lattice of dirt tracks left by Amboseli elephants coming and going from the watering holes. Satao Elerai

DAY 4 LION HILL LODGE LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK Wendy Stone After breakfast, begin the drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Nakuru is a small, beautiful park with ecosystems that include an acacia forest, woodlands, and a famous soda lake that draws flocks of greater and lesser flamingos and over 4oo species of other birds. Up to four million flamingos roam the Rift Valley lakes in great flocks throughout the year, searching for the best feeding and bathing conditions. Each day, a substantial number of these flamingos settle on Lake Nakuru, producing a fascinating fusion of sights and sounds. Nakuru is full of wildlife, and you ll have the opportunity for sightings of giraffe, baboons, rhino, buffalo, zebra, and many antelope species including waterbuck, eland, reedbuck, dik dik, impala, Thompson and Grant gazelles, as well as numerous warthogs. Swimming Pool Wifi Stop in Nairobi for lunch. You ll arrive at Lion Hill Lodge in the evening. As the name implies, the lodge is located on Lion Hill which overlooks Lake Nakuru itself. From the comfort of your room and the lodge s cozy common areas, you will have marvelous views of pelicans fishing and flamingos wading in the waters.

DAY 5 LION HILL LODGE LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK Sarova Hotels Explore the park via Land Cruiser, stopping for a picnic lunch in the bush. Today is an ideal opportunity to catch a glimpse of several endangered species that thrive around Lake Nakuru. Since the 1990 s, a number of species have been introduced into this park by Kenyan Wildlife Service including black and white rhino, and their populations continue to grow steadily. The iconic Rothschild s giraffe herd numbers between 60 and 70 members. There is a limited number of predators in Nakuru, with only a few lions and leopards to check plains game populations. This means that antelope herds here are large and habituated. Don t be surprised if you encounter an antelope roadblock while driving along. Swimming Pool Wifi Nakuru has been challenged in recent years by development and urban sprawl, which has brought many people to live on the outskirts of this once remote park. Because of this, human and wildlife conflicts became a problem. As a solution, Kenya Wildlife Service has built an electric fence around this small park. Funds for the fence were provided by the World Wide Fund for Nature for the purpose of maintaining a large population of rhino in one well-protected zone, secure from poachers.

DAY 6 BASECAMP MAASAI MARA MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE Basecamp Explorer Embark on a drive into one of Africa s great, classic safari lands: the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. This northern region of the Serengeti ecosystem is famous for the great migration of wildebeest that follow seasonal rains across the endless plains that straddle the border between Kenya and Tanzania. As you head west, you will see the landscape begin to change to drier savanna grasslands. Note the many herds of cattle tended by young Maasai herdsmen. You ll stop for a picnic lunch on the way and begin wildlife viewing as soon as you enter the Mara. A wide array of habitats is represented in the Mara, each with a unique complement of flora and fauna. Acacia woodlands attract giraffes, while hippos occupy the deeper river pools. The eastern and western Mara, as well as the Mara River, are all accessible to you by Land Cruiser. You ll arrive in the late afternoon at Basecamp Mara, just in time for sundowners (drinks at sundown) under the fiery evening sky.

DAY 7 BASECAMP MAASAI MARA MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE Basecamp Explorer During the right time of year, you will be able to witness what makes the Mara famous: the annual migration. The herds gather in the hundreds of thousands on the plains of the Mara from July into late October. The herds are drawn into the northern region by areas of greater rainfall which causes the grasses to grow taller and stay greener longer. The migration includes vast herds of wildebeest, but also zebra and Thomson s gazelle. During these months you can see them chomping and trampling the grass, grunting, and stampeding across the Mara. Basecamp Maasai Mara will put you front and center for the action. Situated on the banks of the Talek River a crossing point for countless wildebeests you will be a short distance away from watching the herds cross through the treacherous waters in search of fresh grass for grazing. Not far from the camp, you will also find the thriving village of Talek, whose community has been a close partner of Basecamp Maasai Mara since its creation. In and around Talek you can see authentic rural life, with all its mesmerizing vibrancy and cultural components. In the surrounding areas, Basecamp has initiated several community programs with the aim of empowering local people through capacity building and vocational training.

DAY 8 BASECAMP MAASAI MARA MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE Head out to savor one last full day of wildlife viewing. These Mara savannas with their open country, short grasses, and superabundance of prey support a healthy cheetah population. As you drive along, look for these predators standing on termite mounds or raised outcrops, surveying the landscape for their next meal. Cheetahs face increasing pressure from humans and land encroachment across Africa, but the Serengeti/Maasai Mara ecosystem is one of their last strongholds. Lions, leopards, and other smaller cats are also in large volume here. At last count, there were 22 lion prides in the Mara. Basecamp Explorer

DAY 9 INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT Basecamp Explorer After breakfast, begin your drive back to bustling Nairobi where a day room at Macshula House will be waiting. At Macshula you can rest up, re-pack, and get ready for your international departure. Afterwards, a driver will pick you up and transfer you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home.
