OCTOBER 21, 2016 THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2016 In a change from past years, we have decided that starting this year the Museum will now be closed to visitors on Thanksgiving Day. This practice is in line with a national trend to preserve the holiday for families to be together. We support this goal and are pleased to be able to provide the opportunity for as many staff members as possible to spend the day with their loved ones. Since this is a late change to our schedule, please be mindful to share it with others as we have members and local visitors who may have made Mystic Seaport a Thanksgiving activity. -Susan Funk PILOTS FUND AWARDEES This Fall the Pilots Fund received several applications for consideration for their awards. A SUCCESSFUL PILOTS WEEKEND Many, many thanks to all staff, volunteers and project leaders for helping to make our Fall PILOTS Weekend a grand success. From the CRC to the Shipyard, Mystic Seaport was abuzz with 102 enthusiastic and energetic PILOTS working hard and accomplishing important work. The PILOTS could not have prospered over the past four decades without the support of the talented and dedicated people of Mystic Seaport. Please accept a special thank you from the PILOTS corps for all that you do, day in and day out to ensure the success of Mystic Seaport. - EveAnne Stouch and Amanda Keenan A VERY SUCCESSFUL ADVENTURE SERIES A huge thank you to our volunteers and staff who stepped up to help at last Thursday s Adventure Series. With 265 people attending the afternoon talk, and 290 at the evening talk, it was the largest turnout in recent years. You did it all you guided people into the talk, you provided faster check in, and you hauled chairs in and out of the River Room! I could not have done it without you. Kudos to volunteers Beth Freeman, Karen Bastidas, Carmel Bourneouf, Kate Waterman, Tom and Tracy Mirsky, Anne Butler, Dane Rochelle and Mary Ann Root and staff member Erich Propfe. Thank you! -Mary Cairns TRICK OR TREAT CANDY DONATIONS Membership is accepting donations for candy again this year for Trick or Treating. 2015 was a banner year with over 600 children coming to the grounds. We are happy to accept individually wrapped candy to supplement our inventory this year. Please bring your bag of candy to Membership by October 28. Thank you in advance for your generosity. -Mary Cairns
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WELCOMES NEW STAFF MEMBER I am pleased to announce that we have hired Kate Ainsworth as a Lead Instructor for our Community Sailing Program. Kate grew up sailing, and is an alum of the Williams-Mystic Program. Her responsibilities included curriculum development, instructor training, logistical planning, maintenance, and daily instruction on and off the water. Kate was also a sailing and marine science instructor at Sail New Haven, is US Sailing Level 1 certified, and was the Captain of the Tufts University crew team. Most recently Kate spent two months sailing on the Viking longship Draken Harald Hårfagre, now docked at Mystic Seaport for the winter. Kate started Oct. 17 and will be based at the Youth Training Building. DYER DHOW DERBY A SUCCESS WITH BEAUTIFUL WEATHER Mystic Seaport hosted the 67 th annual Dyer Dhow Derby on Saturday, October 15. The Dyer Dhow Derby is an annual regatta held in honor of the yacht clubs, sailing associations, and individuals who have donated to or supported the Dyer Dhow fleet of more than 50 boats at Mystic Seaport. Beautiful weather made for a fantastic day of sailing (with some light winds in the morning picking up a bit) with no capsizes this year. A huge thank you to Hallie Payne, Ben Ellcome, and Wes Pfiffner for making it all happen. -Sarah Cahill THIS WEEK FROM THE OPERATIONS COMMITTEE Saturday October 22, 2016 America and the Sea Gala 12 pm-3pm Lantern Light Rehearsals in exhibits and ships 6pm-11pm America and the Sea Gala on the McGraw Common and Thompson Exhibition Building 6pm-11:30pm Nautical Nightmares Boat Shed, Grounds, Exhibits and Ships No Groups Treworgy Planetarium: 11am Harvest Lights" at 11:00 AM 2pm Harvest Lights" at 2:00 PM 3pm Harvest Lights" at 3:00
