RAPS Newsletter AUTUMN 2011 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: COORDINATORS UPDATE Hi everyone! We are only at the beginning of 2011, but there has already been lots of exciting things happening at RAPS! Firstly, a big welcome to Alex, our new Activity Support Officer. As I mentioned last newsletter, she will be taking over my role leading the activities, allowing me more time in the office to help grow and improve RAPS. Alex has been doing a great job since she started, and I m sure everyone will enjoy attending the activities with Alex in charge! The other exciting development to start off the year is that RAPS will now be running activities every weekend! This will mean even more opportunities for everyone to get out and enjoy RAPS outings. And as you ll see from the report on the next page, we will also be providing free bus transport to and from each weekend activity, making it even easier to attend our activities! This quarter s calendar has a range of new activities, as well as a few old RAPS favourites. We ve also brought back the Men s Group, and moved the daytrips to the weekend in the hope that it will allow more people to attend. So there is certainly plenty happening at RAPS over the next three months, and we hope that everyone is looking forward to the activities that are coming up! Lastly, I want to encourage anyone with any ideas about future activities, or feedback about the current calendar, to get in touch with me in the office and let me know. Whether the ideas are big or small, we want to hear them and make sure everyone is enjoying the activities on offer! RAPS Activities 4 RAPS Calendar 10 Booking Form 14 Phone numbers With Alex now running the activities, there will be a change to the phone number to contact during activities, or for any last minute questions or cancellations related to the activities. If you need to contact RAPS during an activity, or just prior to it, you will need to ring Alex directly on 0450 049 115. This might be to confirm where the meeting point is, or let RAPS know if you have to cancel at the last minute. For all other enquiries, Alistair will be available during business hours on the existing numbers (9518 8277 or 0421 078 710). P AGE 2 AUTUMN 2011 INTRODUCING ALEX RAPS NEW ACTIVITY SUPPORT OFFICER Hi all, I m very excited to join you at RAPS and have thoroughly enjoyed myself so far as your new Activity Support Officer. I will soon be taking over from Alistair in leading the activities at RAPS, although Alistair will be sure to pop in frequently to say hello! Many of you will have met me already, however here s a little about my background to introduce myself properly: I am currently completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Social Health at Macquarie University, which is a mixture between a counselling and social work degree, in which I will specialise in disabilities. As well as my work with RAPS, I also play as a guest orchestral clarinettist with the Sydney Symphony, and teach music to young students. I also have a great interest in Indigenous welfare and have recently initiated a program with the Sydney Symphony and the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence where I lead an outing with Indigenous young people to several concerts at the Opera House throughout the year. I currently live in Glebe right near the RAPS office with my partner Max and my kitten Simba, and I really enjoy socialising with friends. I look forward to meeting all of you and enjoying future activities together. Alex BITS & PIECES Joining the Dots Joining the Dots is an exhibition of disability service providers from throughout the Inner West of Sydney. People with a disability, their family and carers, will be able to meet with a range of over 60 service providers, and find out what services are available to people with a disability, and their carers, in our area. Joining the Dots is on Wednesday 6th April, from 1pm 4pm at Burwood RSL. We would encourage as many people as possible to attend, it is a unique opportunity to get an overview of all services available in the area! Please contact the office for more information. Bus Transport for weekend activities RAPS is really pleased to be able to offer free bus pick up and drop home for all of our weekend activities in this calendar! With RAPS now offering an activity every weekend, we are hoping that this will make it much easier, and more affordable, for everyone to attend RAPS outings. Just look out for the bus symbol in the outing descriptions!
