Contents Executive Summary 3 Market Report 4 Salary Guide 8 About Greythorn 29 Contact us 29 These survey results are recognised throughout the Australian IT industry as an accurate representation of the industry and a market leading source of quality insights and opinions. All survey responses, comments and insights have been consolidated for this Australian IT Recruitment Market Insights and Salary Guide 2016-2017. This survey was carried out during June-July 2016 and distributed via an online questionnaire. Greythorn received 2583 responses. Market Update Cloud and DevOps projects and opportunities will dominate the infrastructure market this year. Public and private sector organisations alike are embarking on major projects driving the recruitment of those skilled in cloud and DevOps (AWS, Azure & IBM softlayer). Additionally, with many organisations not sure how to best utilise the cloud, there will continue to be an increase in external consultancies and professional services companies trying to build this capability. Systems Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM) skills have also been in high demand over the past 12-24 months. Building efficiencies in a business technology makeup is an ongoing focus and SCCM has been instrumental in helping businesses develop these efficiencies and as a result, lower operating costs. The key challenge this year will be overcoming the current skills shortage. States in southern Australia are feeling the skills shortages more keenly with a loss of highly skilled and talented engineers to the east coast where these professionals can command higher rates and have more opportunities. Meanwhile, traditional network engineering and systems engineering roles remain stagnant in the market. Many businesses are opting to outsource their infrastructure environments to Managed Service Providers (MSP) and we have seen a decline in the demand for having these resources and skills onsite. Rates in areas in high demand such as cloud and DevOps will keep rising as competition for skilled candidates increases. Rates and salaries for service desk and desktop support professionals have been increasing incrementally over the past 12-18 months and will continue to do so. Many organisations understand the current situation of high demand and low supply of suitably skilled professionals and are able to move quickly. In markets such as this it is important to also understand that the best candidates are often in the market (gainfully employed) and not on the market (unemployed). Employers must consider whether they have access to these candidates, and having found them, if they have a compelling enough offer. It is equally important to sell your organisation and the opportunity in an interview as it is for a prospective candidate to sell themselves to you. Looking to job seekers, those pursuing roles in DevOps should concentrate on getting as much hands on experience as possible. We recommend taking a wider focus, rather than just looking at AWS and ensuring your roles have enough depth. When applying for a role it is important to not rely solely on your resume to sell your skills. Many of the traits employers seek are not readily available or obvious in a resume. Calling a hiring manager or recruiter and introducing yourself adds to your likelihood of securing an interview and gives you the opportunity to explain your unique skill set. Rachel Van Zyl Senior Consultant Jack George Consultant Ralph Fontelar Consultant 3

Due to increased hiring activity job seekers are far more confident of rate increases this year, with over one third expecting an increase, compared to only 15% in 2015.
