Paint Cuba Image & Word is an immersive art workshop designed for adventurous artists, writers and photographers Join us for a drawing, journaling and photography trip to Havana and Trinidad, Cuba with award winning teacher and artist, Enrique Flores Galbis. Experience the people, arts and the visual poetry of Cuba while creating a treasured memento of a unique journey, a living journal. Our trip starts with a three-day expertly guided immersion into the rich history of the Architecture of Havana and vital presence of Cuban Art and Music. Then we leave the hustle and bustle of the big city for Trinidad, a beautifully restored colonial town and Unesco World Heritage Site on the southern coast of the island. We ll settle in to sketch and photograph the colorful colonial buildings, vistas of the mountains and waterfalls while getting around in vintage cars, antique railroad, and horseback. Of course there will be plenty of time to draw and write in our journals The travel journal is composed of drawings, water media, and written insights set down in real time. It will serve as a means to decipher the complex spirit of a people, record the visual poetry of the city and countryside, as well provide source material for future art work. Journals are also highly portable allowing us to travel light. This is an intensive travel workshop with the aim of refining our drawing, writing, and photography skills while creating an intimate link with the people, places and music of Cuba. There will be daily discussions on the dynamics of using images and words to capture the essence of a scene. The journal size is up to each artist and any media (except oils) is acceptable.

Itinerary December 8-16 2014 Havana Pearl of the Caribbean 12/8 After we settle in to our rooms in the beautiful Casa Vitrales in the heart of Old Havana, we ll have lunch and then set off on our rounds of the historic, restored city guided by retired Master Architect & Historian, Orestes del Castillo. Our tour of living historical sites will include: the Plaza de Armas, Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, Palacio del Segundo Cabo, Plaza de la Catedral, Catedral de San Cristobal, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de San Francisco. That evening we will dine together at the Paladar La Guarida, and then we re off to hear Latin Jazz at La Zorra y el Cuervo Club. The Arts and Artists of Havana 12/9 Our second day in Havana is devoted to the rich history and vital presence of Cuban Art in Havana. We start the day with a guided tour of the Cuban Art Collection at the National Museum of Fine Arts led by Art Historian and Curator Raquel Carrera. Raquel will focus on the evolution of Cuba s art from the colonial era to the contemporary. After lunch, Raquel will provide access to the studios and galleries of established, as well as up and coming young artists. We will have a chance to view the work and then over coffee engage these highly articulate artists in a conversation on their inspiration and means of their creations. After dinner, those that are so inclined, can join us for live music at El Gato Tuerto Club in Vedado. The People to People 12/10 Our third morning, over breakfast we ll work on the form and progress of our journals, and if so inclined, sharing entries. The rest of the morning will be devoted to drawing from the model at the Casa Vitrales, trying to record in word and images the presence of an individual. That afternoon we will visit the studio of Jose Fuster The Cuban Picasso whose exuberant mosaics spill out over a whole neighborhood in Jaimanitas, east of Havana. We will be spending a great deal of time at street level drawing, photographing, and asking questions. You might be surprised by the candid answers. Cubans, in general are a curious, friendly people, not too shy to engage and ask question themselves. The evening is left free to stroll or explore the Havana nocturne of your choice. Of course there will be suggestions on places to go from local experts. Road Trip to Trinidad 12/11 In the morning we trade the hustle and bustle of Havana for the peaceful and astoundingly beautiful countryside. On our way to Trinidad, on the Southern coast of the island we will stop at the Zapata National Park, one of the largest wetlands in the world The Zapata swamp, an unspoiled landscape teeming with a wild profusion of rare plants, birds, fish and reptiles, was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2000. With our sketchbooks and

cameras always at the ready we head for Playa Giron on the shore of the famous Bay of Pigs the site of the failed invasion by Cuban exiles. We ll visit the Bay of Pigs Museum where history enthusiasts might come away with a different perspective on the events of April 17-20 of 1961, which changed the history of two nations. We arrive in Trinidad as green night falls and just in time for an after dinner stroll. Trinidad Established in 1514, Trinidad, a Unesco World Cultural Heritage site, was once the center of sugar production and notably the port from which Hernan Cortes set off on his expedition to conquer Mexico. The adjacent Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills) was the origin of the Cuban sugar industry in the 18th century. It is home to numerous cane sugar mills, as well as cattle ranches and tobacco plantations and inspiring views of the Escambray mountain range. With Trinidad as our home base we ll take daily excursions to places of interest in the surrounding countryside. There will always be time to sketch and photograph on our tours with longer stays scheduled for more elaborate studies at selected locations. We will be staying with local families at small paladares for a real flavor of life in Cuba. Touring Trinidad 12/12 Our first day in Trinidad starts with a guided tour of this colorful, historic town led by Historian Guillermo Cantero. After lunch in a local paladar we explore the town on our own to sketch and photograph in the afternoon light. Along the Watchtower 12/13 The next day Guillermo will lead the tour of the Valle de los Ingenios and then the visit to Manaca Iznaga Estate with its famous watchtower where we can enjoy the views of the sugar plantations and the beautiful Cuban landscapes. After an al fresco box lunch we will stop at the scenic overlook and record our impression of this historic valley. Returning to Trinidad in the late afternoon we ll have enough time for another sketching and photo session in town. Horseback Sketching 12/14 On our final day in Trinidad we will pack up our sketching and photo kits for a horseback ride to the Natural Park, El Cubano, 5 km from Trinidad. Located on the banks of the Guarabo River, there are water holes as well as the ruins of one of the first sugar mills in the area to explore. In the afternoon we will we return to Trinidad to visit the Cabildo de los Congos Reales de San Antonio, a cultural and religious institution founded in 1845 to preserve the culture and traditions of two of the most important African groups, Congos and Yorubas, brought to the island as slaves. This institute is well known for its rumba sessions. In the evening we will have Dinner and music in Trinidad at the Casa de la Trova. Return to Havana 12/15 The road back to Havana will take us to the Sierra Escambray and Lago de Hanbanilla the highest mountain lake on the island and famous for it s mirror like waters. Not far from the lake are the stunning Love Waterfall and it s refreshing water hole. After lunch in Santa Clara we will visit the Che Guevarra Monument and then depart for Havana. For our last night in Havana we ll visit the Cafe La Taverna for music from the Buena Vista Social Club musicians. Depart for Miami 12/16
