Australian Technology Recruitment Market Insights & Salary Guide 2016-2017 Digital & Mobile 1

Contents Executive Summary 3 Market Report 5 Salary Guide 9 About Greythorn 33 Contact us 33 These survey results are recognised throughout the Australian IT industry as an accurate representation of the industry and a market leading source of quality insights and opinions. All survey responses, comments and insights have been consolidated for this Australian IT Recruitment Market Insights and Salary Guide 2016-2017. This survey was carried out during June-July 2016 and distributed via an online questionnaire. Greythorn received 2583 responses. Market Update Growth is the buzzword when it comes to the digital and mobile sector. This area of the IT market has been driving employment growth for the past year, and with a plethora of new projects and technologies opening up there are no signs of this slowing any time soon. The continued emphasis on companies becoming cloud enabled is shifting the focus of projects towards application development and modernisation with new software delivery models, programming languages and development methodologies. Meanwhile, the continuing explosion of the IoT and multi-device platforms is driving a strong trend in mobile development, open source software and cloud technologies. Cost is a major factor across all of this, as is agility, flexibility and the speed at which new applications are able to be deployed. As companies look to move further into the digital age we re seeing a move from PMO style structures to customer-centric product driven teams. This is likely continue for new digital and technology teams and will ensure growth in all areas surrounding product, technology, design and DevOps. Key skills in demand are set to include: Customer Experience (CX) Digital Strategy Responsive Web Development Conversion Rate Optimisation Display, Mobile, Digital, Content and Social Media Marketing Mobile Development (ios and Android) Ecommerce Paid Search (Google Adwords) SEO/SEM There is ongoing demand for talented professionals in the design sector, across UX Design and Research and UI and Visual Design. There also has been an increase in roles available for React.js Developers with the popularity of this framework growing considerably over the last quarter. As the technology stack for companies continues to widen, so does their need for candidates with broader skillsets of varying technologies. Often these are skills and technologies that candidates historically would not have paired together. The need for Service Designers is also becoming apparent in the corporate sector. Across all these roles there is an increasing need for candidates to have strong digital literacy skills as well the flexibility to adapt in rapidly changing environments, however above all cultural fit is key. Generally speaking, salaries will continue to rise within this sector as there is high demand and an increasing skills shortage. Candidates working within the digital and mobile sector increasingly desire work-life balance, with flexible working the most sought after benefit according to Greythorn s survey. Employers seeking to compete in this market would do well to market such opportunities. There is potential for a plateau in rates in the UX and Design community as more candidates upskill from other parts of the industry with Graphic & Visual Designers as well as Business Analysts moving into UX. Meanwhile, development salaries look to remain steady. With such growth candidates are in high demand and skilled candidates are receiving multiple offers, affording them the opportunity to pick and choose the type of role they want in an unprecedented way. Continued over... 3

Market Update On the employer side there is a raised awareness and significant increase in speed of turnaround in the interview process as employers realise they need to move much faster to secure their candidates in such a competitive market. Those who are slow to react to this changing marketplace will lose out on candidates. Employers looking to compete in such a candidate driven market need to ensure they develop an employer value proposition outside of remuneration. HR departments need to develop strong marketing strategies to attract and retain employees. This includes promoting workplace culture, training, career development and flexible working opportunities. For design and technical professionals, an updated portfolio of work or a GitHub account is a musthave these days. Employers are increasingly looking for candidates with a demonstrated passion for technology, who are going to embrace and keep up with the fast-paced evolution of the technology landscape. Demonstrating that you keep up to date with new technologies is imperative. If you are attending meet-ups, writing code on github, have built an app or a website, have a portfolio or have been building/learning/tinkering/playing with new technologies on the side then showcase this on your CV. In this sector it s incredibly important to highlight your passion for digital as that is what will help you stand out from the crowd. Michael Boyd Principal Consultant Britt McGill Managing Consultant 4
