Statement of intent of RA CTI to organize Euro-Par 2012 in Rhodes Island, Greece Contact Christos Kaklamanis Professor, Deputy Director of RA CTI Dept. of Computer Engineering and Informatics, University of Patras University of Patras, Building B, GR26504, Rion, GREECE Email: kakl@ceid.upatras.gr, ckakl@cti.gr Tel.: +30 2610 997868, +30 2610 960331 Fax: +30 2610 960479 We propose to organize the 2012 edition of the Euro-Par Conference in Rhodes Island, Greece from August 27 to August 31. This document describes Rhodes Island, the Research Academic Computer Technology Institute (RA CTI), the organizing committee and the proposed conference setting. A preliminary budget is also provided. 1. Rhodes Island Rhodes Island lies between Crete and Asia Minor in the Aegean sea and it is the biggest of the Dodecanese islands. Named the sun island and with its subtropical climate Rhodes Island is one of the most popular holiday islands in Greece. 1
Rhodes Island offers the visitor a plethora of all-year-round leisure alternatives, covering all types of tourist activity. The natural beauty of the island, the long sandy beaches, the monuments from its long and often turbulent history, a cosmopolitan character, as well as an excellent tourist infrastructure make it a very attractive destination. The strategic location of Rhodes, as the crossroad of three continents, has endowed it with the traditions and heritage of many diverse civilisations, as the island was conquered by Phoenicians, Minoan Cretans, Dorians, Romans, and Turks, who all left their deep signs and presence. Rhodes became the capital of the Byzantine island territories and the settling point of the Order of St-John s Knights after they were 2
expelled from the Holy Land. The Knights built the Medieval City of Rhodes, a world heritage City protected by UNESCO, which remains until today in excellent condition. The modern city of Rhodes is one of the biggest municipalities in the Greek islands, with about sixty thousand permanent residents. It is the financial and cultural centre of the southeastern Aegean, and successfully combines a lively present with a rich historical past. The city has an excellent tourist infrastructure and offers a wide variety of entertainment (night-life, sports, cultural events, and day trips to the ancient town of Lindos, the Valley of Butterflies and the neighboring islands like Kos, Patmos, Karpathos, Kalymnos and Leros). Travelling to Rhodes Island: The easiest way to arrive at Rhodes Island is by airplane either through Athens or directly. There are several flights per day from Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos to Rhodes Island (their frequency increases in the summer). The duration of the flight is 50-60 minutes. Also, especially in the summer, there are several direct flights from all around Europe to Rhodes International Airport Diagoras. There are also other local flights to cities and islands of Greece. The island of Rhodes lies at a distance of 260 nautical miles southeastern to Piraeus port near Athens, with which it is connected every day by ferryboats; the trip lasts approximately 12 hours. There are also connections to nearby islands. 3

2. Research Academic Computer Technology Institute (RA CTI) The Research Academic Computer Technology Institute (RA CTI - http://www.cti.gr) is a non-profit research and development organization, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education of Greece, enjoying financial and administrative independence. It was originally established in 1985 in Patras. RA CTI main premises is located in Patras University Campus at "D. Maritsas" Building. A branch with additional offices is located in Athens. Paul Spirakis, Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, University of Patras, is the Director of RA CTI and Christos Kaklamanis, Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, University of Patras, is the Deputy Director of RA CTI. RA CTI personnel includes 270 scientists, engineers as well as personnel for administration/financial services and technical support. RA CTI constitutes an integrated research environment in Greece highly involved in conducting basic and applied research, in the design and development of products and solutions as well as in supporting of all forms of education and training in Information & Communication Technologies. Furthermore, RA CTI provides consulting, development and planning services in ICT fields to the Ministry of Education. It obtains its funding from EU R&D projects, the private sector, as well as the public sector, as it serves as official technical and scientific consultant of the Greek State. The technical consultancy projects are conducted in seven Sectors while RA CTI R&D activities are conducted in seven Research Units and span a very wide range of basic and applied areas in Computer Science & Engineering and Communications. Parallel computation and communication has always been a special focus of the research conducted in RA CTI. Several senior RA CTI researchers have a strong research record in parallel computing (including algorithms, architectures, systems, etc). Since 1985, Research Academic CTI has organized many international scientific conferences in Greece. In particular, RA CTI has successfully organized several international conferences with a special focus on parallel computing, like: the 1st and 3rd International Conference on Supercomputing (ICS 87 and 89, respectively) at Athens and Crete Island, rsp., the 6th International Conference on Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe (PARLE 94) at Athens, the 2nd Annual ACM Symposium on Parallel Algorithms and Architectures (SPAA 90) at Crete Island, the 13th ACM Symposium on Parallel Algorithms and Architectures (SPAA 01) at Crete Island, the 20th IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium 5
(IPDPS 06) at Rhodes Island and the 22nd ACM Symposium on Parallelism in Algorithms and Architectures (SPAA 10) at Santorini Island. Other international conferences RA CTI has organized include: AWOC 86 (Loutraki), AWOC 88 (Corfu Isl.), WDAG 91 (Delphi), ESA 95 (Corfu), SIROCCO 95 (Olympia), RALCOM 97 (Santorini Isl.), DISC 98 (Andros Isl.), EUSIPCO 98 (Rhodes Isl.), STOC 01 (Crete Isl.), ICALP 01 (Crete Isl.), SIROCCO 02 (Andros Isl.), WEA 05 (Santorini Isl.), WINE 06 (Patras), DCOSS 08 (Santorini Isl.), ICALP 09 (Rhodes Isl.). 3. Euro-Par 2012 Organizing Committee Christos Kaklamanis: he is Full Professor and Vice-Chair at the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics of University of Patras, and Deputy Director at the Research Academic Computer Technology Institute. His research interests include parallel computation and communication, design and analysis of algorithms, networks, parallel and distributed systems, theory of computation, fault tolerance, computational social choice, cryptography, algorithmic game theory.
