the right way to go Student Rider Guide 2009-2010 Effective August 2009

Find your route to school by using the handy guide on page 3. Keep track of your routes here. My ride to school

Getting to school The Nashville MTA bus system is a great way to get to and from school. Most routes can even accommodate afterschool activities, so getting a ride home after practice is no longer a problem. And, MTA makes riding the bus safe and comfortable. Our friendly drivers are happy to help by answering whatever questions you may have. To plan your trip you will need: Bus schedules for the routes that serve your home and your school Youth Fares Youth fares (for riders ages 19 and under) are $1.05. Tell the driver you need the youth fare and pay with the exact change when you get on the bus or use an All-Day, 7-Day or 31 Day Quest Youth Pass. If you plan to transfer to another bus, you will need to pay another full fare of $1.05 or swipe your multi-ride pass. $1 coins are great...or...buy multi-ride passes! Where to BUY passes A Quest Youth Pass or bus fare ($1.05) The time you need to arrive or leave school Music City Central, 400 Charlotte Avenue By Mail: MTA, 130 Nestor Street, Nashville, TN 37210 Online: www.nashvillemta.org Cash, checks, money orders and credit/debit cards are accepted. the right way to go 1

How to plan your trip to school The best way to plan your route is to work backwards from the time you need to get to school that way, you ll never be late! Use the school listings on pages 7-11 to determine the route that serves your school. Using the bus schedule for your school route, find the timepoints for Weekdays from Downtown. (See How to Read a Bus Schedule on page 3.) On the route schedule, find the stop closest to your school and follow the column down to the time you need to arrive at school. Write the route and arrival time under My School on the inside covers. From your arrival time on the route schedule, move to the far left to find the time the bus leaves downtown in order to get to your stop. Write this departure time under My Connection on the inside covers. Use the Area Bus Routes list on page 6 to determine the routes that serve your area of town. Using the map on the bus schedule for each route, find the most convenient stop for you. Write the route number under My Home on the inside covers. Using the bus schedule for your home route, find the timepoints for Weekdays to Downtown. On the route schedule, look at the far right column and find the departure time for your connection to school. Move up the column to a time that will get you downtown in plenty of time to make your connection. Note this arrival time under My Connection on the inside covers. From your connection arrival time, follow the row to the far left to find the time the bus leaves your home bus stop. Write this departure time under My Home on the inside covers. Work backwards to get home from school. Be sure you are looking at the schedule for the buses heading in the right direction! Make your notes for your return ride on the back inside cover. 2 the right way to go

How to Read a Schedule MTA offers 37 bus routes serving the metro area. Routes are designated by a route number and destination. Maps and schedules for each route are available at MTA displays around town, online at www.nashvillemta.org or by calling Customer Care at (615) 862-5950. All bus schedules have a map of the route and a list of timepoints the bus runs along the route. Timepoints are organized by day (times are different for weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays/holidays) and direction of travel (to downtown/ from downtown). Timepoints are read in columns and rows. To find the estimated times a bus stops at a particular spot, read down the column for the location. To determine the times that a particular bus will stop at other stops, read across the row (left to right). This is how you determine the time you need to get on a bus to get to where you are going on time. Bus stops along the route Day Direction of Travel Music City Central Timepoint Read down the column to see the times the bus stops at your location Read across the row to find what time your bus stops at other locations If a symbol or letter appears next to a time, check the route schedule notes for more information the right way to go 3

Finding Your Bus and Bus Stop Blue-and-white MTA bus stop signs, bus shelters or benches identify bus stops. You must be at the bus stop on time so you won t miss the bus. The bus schedule will let you know what time to expect the bus. (Running a little late? Check your bus schedule another bus will probably be along soon.) Look for the route name and number on the bus front and side displays. Make sure you are getting on the right bus! If you have any questions about where the bus is going, ask the driver. Stand away from the road to avoid traffic. getting on the Bus Enter the bus through the door nearest the driver. Please wait for others to leave before entering the bus. Please remain behind the standing line until riders have left the bus. Find a seat promptly and place your book bag and other belongings on your lap instead of taking an extra seat. Please avoid sitting on the floor, steps, etc. and follow the direction of the driver. His or her job is to make sure you arrive safely! Please behave in a safe, courteous manner at all times. No loud noises, horseplay or inappropriate behavior is permitted. Please place trash in specified containers. Be respectful of other riders. Stay in well-lit areas. Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before lining up to climb aboard. No need to crowd to get on the bus first... I need my space, man. there s plenty of room for everyone! 4 the right way to go

Exiting the Bus It is important that you remain alert while riding the bus. It is your responsibility to get off the bus at your stop. If you are not sure where to get off, ask the driver as you get on the bus. If you know the stop you want, signal the driver about one block before the stop by either pulling the stop cord or pushing the strip located next to the window. When exiting the bus, please use the exit doors toward the middle of the bus. Please remain at the top step until the green light comes on indicating it is safe to exit. Never cross the street in front of a bus. Wait until the bus has pulled off so you can safely cross the road. Transferring from one bus to another If you plan to transfer to another bus, you will need to pay another full fare when you board that bus. If you are using a multi-ride pass, just swipe your pass at the fare box. Transfers to and from regional routes (outside Davidson County) are different and may require an additional fee. Please call (615) 862-5950 for more information. The main transfer point is located at Music City Central (400 Charlotte Avenue). Bike and ride All MTA buses are equipped with bike racks. In just a few seconds, you can securely store your bike and ride in comfort. Simply squeeze the metal handle in the center of the rack and pull down. Place your front wheel in the tray, rotate the knobbed handle around to secure the front tire in the rack, and release the knobbed handle to allow the arm to clamp down on the front tire. the right way to go 5
