SANORD Conference 2017 The Role of Universities In Research & Knowledge Transfer To Improve The Livelihoods In Southern Africa 28 November - 1 December 2017 Elephant Hills, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe Information for Conference Delegates This Information Sheet includes general details and instructions relating to the delegates total experience whilst visiting the Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe for the SANORD Conference 2017. Registration Location and Hours The Registration Desk at the Conference will open in the Secretariat Rooms at the Elephant Hills Hotel on Monday, 27 November 2017 at 0800hours. All delegates arriving must register and collect their registration packs and badges from the Registration Desk to be able to attend the SANORD Conference. The desk will be open till Thursday, 30 November 2017 till 12 noon. Conference Registration Fees The Conference registration fee of US$ 575.00- Early bird (Early bird closes 15 October 2017) or US$625.00 -Late Registration (Late registration closes 15 November 2017) which should be paid in advance before the conference, shall cover Conference attendance, morning and afternoon teas and lunch. It will also include attendance of the 10 years Celebration as well as the Gala Dinner. Other events and activities are available at an additional cost as stipulated in the Registration Form. Conference Program and Duration The conference will be held over four days (Tuesday, 28 November to Friday, 1December 2017) and will incorporate a range of plenary sessions, concurrent sessions and paper presentations in conjunction with exciting social functions. Full programmes will be available after 1 September 2017 on the SANORD 2017 webpage. Speakers are requested to load their presentation in advance in the room where they will be presenting. A technician will be available in the room to assist with any AV queries and to load your
presentation to the main computer. Presenters should check-in at least 4 hours before your presentation, or wherever possible, the day prior, especially if speaking in a morning session. Dietary Requirements If you have any special dietary requirements, please indicate your preferences at the Registration Desk upon arrival. Conference Badges Your Conference badge, with your name on it, is your entry to all sessions, lunches, morning and afternoon teas and social functions, and should be worn at all times. Accommodation: It is recommended that delegates book accommodation at the Elephant Hills Hotel, which is the Conference venue. Transport Victoria Falls transport mainly consists of metered taxis and car hire services. We advise delegates to consult the Hotels reception personnel for advice on the use of metered taxis found at each hotel. Various tour operators offer car hire services at an agreed cost. For the Airport Shuttle, delegates are advised to use taxis that are readily available at the airport. These charge rates ranging from $25 +. It would be advisable to have cash at hand for this service. Email and Internet access Internet access will be available for all registered delegates for the duration of the Conference. Wi-Fi Internet in the hotel rooms is available upon request for a password from the Hotel Reservations Desk. Currency and Exchange Zimbabwe uses a multi-currency system where service providers accept the United State dollars, the Euro, The British Pound, the South African Rand and the Botswana Pula. The country has introduced the Bond note which has a 1:1 ratio with the US Dollar. Most service providers in Victoria Falls will accept MasterCard and Visa Cards issued in the US and Europe. Be prepared to pay with cash at smaller outlets with transactions below $50. We advise delegates to be wary of ATM and credit card fraud. WEATHER Summer (Mid August to end April) in Victoria Falls is generally hot to very hot and wet during the rainy season (Mid November to April). Average highs between 32-34 C (90-93 F) and average lows between 15-19 C (59-66 F). For the duration of the Conference, the average temperatures are expected to be at 34 Degrees Celsius which is generally hot. Electricity in Zimbabwe is 220 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. 4
Power Plugs and Sockets In Zimbabwe the power sockets used are of type D and G. Type D: Type G: In the event of a power cut, hotels generally have a back-up generator which automatically switches on. However, contact..if you experience Health and related issues Visitors are advised to contact their family physicians regarding health related matters. Visitors to Victoria Falls should consider prophylactic medication for malaria. You may wish to carry a mosquito repellent cream. Water Tap Water in the hotel and dinner venues is safe to drink. Bottled water is available at retail outlets, with up to five brands that have been officially certified as safe. Tourist Information All major hotels provide tourist information on points of interest in and around Victoria Falls and the various excursions, cultural and sporting events, and other activities that one may find interesting. These include bunjee jumping, white water rafting, helicopter rides, game viewing drives, lion walks, elephant rides, Zambezi River boat cruise, etc. Please consult the Reservations Desk to arrange for such activities at the delegate s own expense.
