December 26, Sunday NO MEETING January 8, 2005, Saturday, 10:00 am - Meet at Nayak. We will visit M7 Aerospace LP at San Antonio International Airport. M7 Aerospace carries forward the legacy of innovation and quality begun by Sherman Fairchild nearly a century ago. The website states: Our decades of experience in Fairchild fundamentals such as aviation maintenance and repair, government logistic support, and aerospace manufacturing cultivate the quality that our customers rely on. Our ongoing innovations in digital aerial orthophotography are extending the M7 Aerospace spirit of innovation both into new realms and back to our roots. M7 Aerospace LP is continuing a proud tradition begun 83 years ago when the forerunners of Fairchild Aircraft began operation. In 2003, M7 Aerospace acquired the assets of Fairchild Aircraft and Dornier Aviation (North America). M7 continues to build on the rich traditions of both names and develop new products and services for the modern aerospace industry. The M7 Aerospace team (250 employees) is committed to providing its customers with the highest quality services, on time delivery, and unsurpassed product support. Decades of experience in aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul, manufacturing and government logistics management makes M7 a frequent choice of government and private sector operators. M7 Aerospace has five core operating units: * M7 Aircraft Parts * M7 Repair Station * M7 Government Logistic Support * M7 Aerospace Manufacturing * M7 Visual Intelligence M7 Aerospace is a privately held company with its headquarters at the San Antonio International Airport (SAT). M7 Aerospace continues a long tradition of aviation service. The five business units provide the following products and services: Aircraft Parts - M7 Aerospace is the world's premier supplier of parts for the Fairchild Metro and Merlin series aircraft. As the holder of the type certificate for the Metro and Merlin series, M7 is uniquely equipped to provide parts and support for these aircraft. M7 also supports other aircraft such as the Dornier 328 and M7 is always looking to become a supplier for other equipment as customer needs grow. Repair Station - M7's repair station at the San Antonio International Airport provides MRO
(Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) services for Fairchild Merlin and Metro series airplanes, the Dornier 328 line of turboprops and jets, and Embraer ERJ-145 and ERJ-135 regional jets. M7 is also continuously expanding into new product lines. The repair station is certified to FAA Part 145 standards, and specializes in servicing regional airline equipment. It is a full service facility, with an avionics shop, upholstery shop, extensive back shops, and other capabilities not always found in all repair stations. Government Logistic Support - M7 Aerospace holds a Contractor Logistics Support (CLS) contract with the U.S. Air Force to support aircraft operated by the Army National Guard and Air National Guard. Aerospace Manufacturing - M7 Aerospace has extensive manufacturing and assembling capabilities as well as engineering support to service the aviation industry. The company's more than 426,000 sq. ft. of facilities have the capacity to produce parts and a range of assemblies from the smallest components to complete aircraft. Aerial Imaging - M7 Visual Intelligence is a leading provider and developer of digital aerial orthophotography and proprietary aerial-based digital imaging hardware, software and processing technologies. Sherman Mills Fairchild got his start in the aviation industry by designing his own aerial cameras. In 1925, Huff-Daland failed to honor a contract with Sherman Fairchild acting as an independent aircraft salesman prompting the creation of Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing Corp. in 1926. The U.S. Army's first dedicated photo- reconnaissance aircraft, the F-1 of 1929, was a Fairchild product. 1925 - Sherman Fairchild forms Fairchild Aviation 1939 - Fairchild introduces the PT-19 1956 - Fairchild acquires rights to Fokker F-27 1964 - Fairchild acquires Hiller Helicopter 1971 - Fairchild acquires Republic Aviation and Swearingen 1998 - Fairchild acquires Do328 from Daimler-Benz 2003 - M7 Aerospace acquires US assets of Fairchild Aviation (Information obtained from www.faidor.com and www.shanaberger.com/fairchild.htm ) January 23, 2005, Sunday, 7:00 pm - Meet at Nayak. Andrew Smith will share his recent visit to Embry-Riddle Aviation and Aerospace University in Florida. The mission of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is to teach the science, practice, and business of the world of aviation and aerospace. Since it was founded just 22 years after the Wright brothers' first flight, the University and its graduates have built an enviable record of achievement in every aspect of aviation and aerospace.
The curriculum at Embry-Riddle covers the operation, engineering, research, manufacturing, marketing, and management of modern aircraft and the systems that support them. The University engages in extensive research, consulting, and related activities that address the unique needs of aviation, aerospace, and related industries. Residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona, provide education in a traditional setting, while an extensive network of more than 130 centers throughout the United States and Europe and a web-based distance learning program serve civilian and military working adults. Our second guest speaker will be Captain Willard (Bill) Haines (who currently lives in Ft. Worth). Capt Haines interest in aviation began as an Air Explorer. In the Air Force, he was the squadron commander of a group of Lear Jets based in Colorado Springs. Bill retired from the USAF and flew for Delta Airlines for almost 15 years. He became a Captain last year, but recently took early retirement. Bill looks forward to visiting an Aviation Exploring Post where it all began for him. The Learjet 45. Over 2000 Learjets have been built and are in operation as corporate jets worldwide.
