Explore the Culture Vulture Route! Nelson Mandela Bay s rich cultural heritage guarantees history lovers a unique insight into the Eastern Cape s and the Municipality s diverse and remarkable past. The nomadic San were the earliest group of indigenous people known to live in the Eastern Cape. The Khoi displaced the San into the mountains and semi-desert, early in the second millennium AD. The forefathers of the Xhosa speaking people arrived on the banks of the Kei River in about 800 AD. While on his epic voyage of discovery searching for a sea route to the East, the Portuguese, Bartolomeu Dias, rounded the Cabo da Roca in February 1488 and entered Baia da Roca Cape and Bay of the Rock (now Cape Recife and Algoa Bay). Dias also gave the name Ilheus Chaos (Flat Islands) to the Bird Islands. In 1497, Vasco da Gama, successor to Dias, entered Algoa Bay and noted the Bird Islands on his voyage to India. His charts gave Cape Recife it s name Cabo do Arricife Cape of the Reef. The Bay was later named Baia de Lagoa, by navigator and cartographer Manuel de Mesquita Perestrelo in 1576, which referred to the lagoon situated at the mouth of the Baakens River. By the middle of the 18th century, the number of ships passing the Bay had increased and occasionally survivors of the shipwrecks were given hospitality by Dutch Trekboers (farmers) who had trekked from the Cape in search of good farmland. At the end of 1799 the English, fearing that the French would render military assistance to the Graaff-Reinet rebels, decided to construct Fort Frederick, overlooking the mouth of the Baakens River as a permanent military post. 4 000 British settlers arrived by sea in 1820, to become the first permanent British residents in the Albany District. On 6 June 1820, Sir Rufane Donkin, Acting Governor of the Cape Colony at the time, named the new sea port in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth. Before the up-country gold and diamond booms, PE developed as one of the major commercial cities in SA, trading in wool, mohair and ostrich feathers. As a result, the harbour became a bustling port. People traveled to the city in search of trade and labour opportunities. Early Port Elizabeth was characterized by the settlement of European, Cape Malay and immigrant communities. The diverse community lived together according to economic and social status, rather than on an ethnic basis. Some folk were already residing in New Brighton since 1903. However, when the Group Areas Act was legislated in 1960, this resulted in forced relocation under the apartheid law among the non-white population and the so-called townships came into being. Avoid carrying large sums of cash and other valuables (cameras, video cameras, etc.). Avoid leaving belongings unattended. Be alert and vigilant at all times. Take special precautions in secluded areas (including parks and gardens and walks / trails), especially at dusk and after dark. Street children and beggars may approach you for a handout Social workers counsel against giving money. Try and walk around in groups; there is safety in numbers. At night, park in a secure, well-lit area. Be aware that uniformed parking attendants will offer to safeguard one s car for a tip (small fee). Do not leave valuable belongings in your car; rather lock everything in the boot where they are out of sight. For any emergency, dial 10111 TOWNSHIP VIBE Taverns (informal drinking halls) were once illegal because they were not licensed for the sale of liquor, but have now legally become a lively cross between social clubs, a bar and a general meeting place. A Tavern tour offers an entertaining 3 4 hours through the life and soul of the Townships. Taverns come alive over weekends when hard work is replaced by beer and laughter. These venues are found on every street corner and add to the atmosphere of Township life. Amid hooting taxis and eager pedestrians, the Tavern offers an informal venue where patrons can relax. Some well-frequented Shebeens include the following: Las Vegas Tavern, KwaZakhele, tel: 041 464 0844 / 083 562 4965 Kwe Kwe s Sports Tavern, 536 Njoli Street, KwaZakhele, tel: 041 466 2336 / cell: 083 741 7602 Patido s Pub & Grub, 27 Jabavu Street, New Brighton, tel: 041 454 0663 cell: 082 968 0540 Jeya s Jazz Corner Tavern, Sheya Kulati Circle, Cnr Ferguson & Avenue A, New Brighton, tel: 041 454 7567 / cell: 072 555 2582 FG s Tavern, 216 Mkhombe Street, NU1 Motherwell, tel: 041 469 4190 / cell: 083 690 9858 Kwa Lunga-General Jazz Place, 11 Nhose Street, Zwide, tel: 041 459 1993 Billy s Tavern, 4 Peta Street, KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, cell: 073 334 7654 Emzini Restaurant, 38 Yoyo Street, Zwide, cell: 073 912 1782 Zwai s Tavern, Motherwell, tel: 041 462 1110 / cell: 076 024 3977 Mavela Tavern, 22 Qhogi Street, Zwide, tel: 041 464 2716 POLITICAL AND HISTORICAL TOWNSHIP TOURS Visitors who wish to explore South Africa s politics and history, may opt for a number of organised social, history and traditional township tours. These tours unveil how history evolved, encompassing diverse peoples and cultures and including a visit to the historical townships demonstrating the impact of the apartheid era on the city. In the townships one will see what limitations applied in the past and how people resisted and adapted. Township life first-hand may be a thought-provoking experience, but visitors are likely to experience a current spirit of optimism. For marketers and planners, this is where the future of South Africa will be shaped. Various accredited tour operators offer social history / township tours and taverns tours. The Red Location Museum of Struggle is a must-see on any visitor s itinerary. The museum, which was opened in November 2006, commemorates South Africa s turbulent apartheid history and long struggle for freedom. Several prestigious awards have been bestowed on the museum for its magnificent architecture. The museum is situated in the historical Red Location, the city s first black township, where the first urban black families settled in the 1900s. Nelson Mandela Bay offers a true ethnic mosaic as the rich cultures and traditions are captured in a unique and creative way that makes this an essential stopover. Numerous Arts and Craft Centres showcase a variety of locally produced artwork. Those seeking retail therapy will find several shopping facilities, ranging from upmarket boutiques, small suburban complexes, craft markets and massive all-encompassing city malls. Speciality stores are conveniently scattered throughout the city and include specialist foods and wine; jewellery shops, gifts and clothing, antique, spice, coffee, attractive momentoes and souvenirs. Children will find much to occupy them and keep them entertained while on holiday. Nelson Mandela Bay is a destination for children as well as their parents and family as there are a wide variety of fun activities and entertainment options to experience. A RICH HERITAGE Under fun historical explorations, the 1820 Settler history and architectural delights of the historical city centre can be explored at leisure on a self-guided walking tour, namely the Donkin Heritage Trail. One of the highly recommended stops along the route would include a visit to the quant No. 7 Castle Hill Museum. This little jewel is one of the oldest surviving Settler cottages in Port Elizabeth. The interior presents a picture of domestic life as enjoyed by an English middle class family in mid-19th Century Port Elizabeth. This picturesque family dwelling located in Castle Hill Road, Central has Yellowwood floors and beams, and a restored slate roof. The doll s house, lace displays and kitchen is particularly impressive and will guarantee a few enlightening and delightful hours of enjoyment. Another firm family favourite is a visit to the main museum of Bayworld. Children can embark on an exciting journey through time and through the fascinating world around us. Marvel at the diversity of museum displays, from prehistoric dinosaurs to ethnic beadwork as well as a variety of historical treasures that will keep one intrigued for hours. Noteworthy exhibits include the 15m skeleton of the last southern right whale harpooned in Algoa Bay, a life-sized reconstruction of the giant prehistoric dinosaur known as Algoasaurus, a replica of the Dias Cross and 5m bronze cannon dated 1640 recovered from a Portuguese galleon wrecked near Port Elizabeth. Their Behind the Scene Tours at the museum are particularly impressive and caters for guests with a special interest in the environment. These tours include animal husbandry such as breeding programmes in the Snake Park, a visit to the Otolith Collection with an explanation on how fish bones help in identifying different species, to a visit to the Dolphin Centre where experts on dolphins, whales and marine mammals will present informative discussions on these topics. Other museum experts are also available to present tours and address visitors on topics such as shipwrecks off the coast, historical costumes, dinosaurs and porcelain. Another must to include on the family itinerary is a visit to the AutoPavilion in Uitenhage. This high-tech interactive expo and heritage centre takes one on a full-throttle journey from concept to classic, laser to legend, with the cars that defined the past and inspire the future. ALIVE WITH ENTERTAINMENT The usual commercial entertainment and activities are also available, one of which is The Magic Company - the pioneer of family entertainment centres in South Africa, which operates the amusement park at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World. A Go-Kart racetrack, Putt-Putt Mini-Golf Adventure Course, fairground rides and bumper boats offer hours of entertainment for children and parents alike. Furthermore, a dynamite package of children s and family entertainment is offered from the Boardwalk s Amphitheatre on a regular basis. Cinema lovers have some fine air-conditioned venues from which to choose in Nelson Mandela Bay. WALK ON THE WILD SIDE The great outdoors provides one of the most wonderful playgrounds for children to learn more about nature and the natural environment. Nelson Mandela Bay is situated in nature-lovers paradise, offering wonderful African bush adventures for the young, and young at heart. Within the city limits of Nelson Mandela Bay itself, an unbeatable variety of walks and hiking trails are available. The surrounding area supports the most diverse array of vegetation types in South Africa as five of the country s seven terrestrial biomes (bio geographic areas) are represented in the Eastern Cape. From special kiddies programs available at a selection of private game reserves which include mini-game drives, educational nature walks where children learn more about the animals and plants in the area, spoor tracking to animal touch farms, the focus is on learning, adventure and having fun. Not forgetting Bayworld s very own Snake Park as well as their educational seal and penguin presentations at the Oceanarium or the reptile demonstrations at the Boma Reptile World. A holiday to Nelson Mandela Bay would not be complete without experiencing a journey aboard the famous historic Apple Express narrow-gauge steam train which operates from Port Elizabeth to Thornhill Village or Loerie on a regular basis. One of the stops is the Van Stadens River Bridge, where children may disembark and photograph the oncoming train as it slowly steams over the highest narrow-gauge bridge in the world. A miniature version of the train can be viewed on the first Sunday of each month when the Port Elizabeth Model Locomotive Society offers miniature train excursions at Stella Londt Drive in Fernglen for the young at heart. Another unusual family fun activity is to experience a Haunted Walk - it is alleged that Port Elizabeth has an over-abundance of ghosts lurking in Central Hill, the city s oldest suburb and historical heartland. Join a Ghostly Group Tour led by well-known historian Rose Trehaevan, who will take groups on a haunted night walk though the old city and tell stories of ghosts. The ghosts of Port Elizabeth are of all kinds, some are heard but not seen, some are seen but not heard and manifest themselves as apparitions. MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES Other family outdoor activities available for the adventurous and adrenalin junkies include sandboarding, horse riding, canoeing and quad biking. Beautiful scenic drives and excursions into the heart of Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas are exciting self-drive options available for the intrepid family adventurer.
