TEENS COMMUNITY PROGRAMS ECUADOR - LATINAMERICA ITINERARY - DAY BY DAY - DESCRIPTION Day 1: Arrive to Quito Once students arrive in Quito International Airport, and after going through customs and immigration, an Explorandes representative and a Travel Tour Leader assigned by your Company, will be waiting to greet them. They will be carrying a sign with the name of the group on it. They will welcome you to the Ecuador, assist you with your luggage, and transfer you to your hotel. Accommodation: Hostal in Quito. Day 2: City Tour & Equatorial Monument * Service with bilingual guide After breakfast, the group will be picked up from the Hostal around 9:30 am. You will drive towards the Equatorial monument (45 min drive north of Quito). Recently renovated, the Middle of the World Village provides a variety of attractions, including a fascinating museum displaying artifacts from all of Ecuador s ethnic groups as well as a visual history of their way of life. This visit takes approximately 2 hours after which you will drive back to Quito to visit El Panecillo Hill where you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city and its surrounding mountains while having a picnic lunch.
After lunch you will descend to Colonial Quito for a guided walking city tour. You will visit the Plaza de Independencia overlooked by the Parliament Building, scene of many revolutions in Ecuador s brief but dramatic history. Included in the itinerary is a visit to the Compañia and San Francisco churches with their impressive façades and gold leaf covered interiors that have changed little since the days of the Spanish. This visit takes approximately 2 ½ hours, after which will be taken back to your hotel. Accommodation: Hostal (1 night, dinner + breakfast)
Day 3: Trip to Community - Transfer early morning around 7:30 am (time to be coordinated with tour leaders) from your hotel to the Community. You will arrive at the Community by lunch time. During the afternoon, you will be briefed by your tour leaders about the activities for the following days. Camp night starts here. Day 4 10: Community Work During these days, you will be engaged with members of the community to follow up with the projects assigned plus other activities such as helping them with milking the cows, bread making, help families in harvesting, etc. Examples of Community Work Projects: Building of sixteen Pigpen s area Steps to be follows: 1) Clean and level area 2) Mark and dig channels for foundations 3) Fill up foundations with rocks and cement (mix cement in proportions) 4) Not sure if we would need and extra day for foundation to dry if so the kids would be assigned another work within the community. 5) Build walls with brick, cement, sand, gravel (1.5 meters) 6) Layout of rock and gravel foundation for the floor
7) Refill the floor with cement. 8) Plumbing installation 9) Finish the walls with a fine cement plastering Tree nursery preparation This activity has the following steps: 1) Clean and mark the area for tree nursery 2) Prepare and mix the organic soil 3) Transplant the new baby trees to large plastic bags 4) As the nursery has different plants and trees and different stages they might also transplant them to places that need to be reforested
Day 10: Last Day at Community This is your last day with the Community, they will organize a farewell for the group. Day 11: Trip to Otavalo It s time to say good-bye to this great experience and to the Community. After breakfast, you will drive towards the small town of Cotacachi (about 1 ½ hours), which is known for its leather industry and other handicrafts, and Volcanic Crater Lake Cuicocha. Its name comes from the Kichwa indigenous language and means Lago del Cuy or Guinea Pig Laguna in English. It was named after the guinea pig shape of the largest Island in the middle of the laguna. Then you will drive for about 20 minutes to Otavalo city. Accommodation: Hostal Aya Huma in Otavalo (1 night, lunch, dinner + breakfast included) Day 12: Otavalo - Tena This day, during the morning, you will visit the Otavalo Market. Home to the hardworking and enterprising Otavalean people. In this colorful and unique market you can find ponchos, embroidered blouses, ceramics, wall hangings, leather crafts and locally produced jewelry.
After this visit, the group will be driven towards the Amazon basin for about 5 hours. Although it may seem a long drive, it is a spectacular scenic drive changing from Andean valleys to high plateaus (paramos, 4,000 mts high, in clear days Antisana Snow capped Mountain 5,800 mts- can be seen), after which you start your descent towards Papallacta Lake driving through the cloud forest to end the day at Tena city (Amazon region rain forest). Accommodation: Jungle Lodge (3 nights, all meals included) Day 13: Rafting Great white-water rafting is a major attraction for the adventure seekers in this region of Ecuador's Amazon. Splendid crystal clear rivers surrounded by a pristine and exotic natural environment make these white-water trips even more spectacular. After breakfast, drive to the headwaters of the Jatunyacu (Napo) River, which is one of the main tributaries of the great Amazon River, where you will receive safety and rafting instructions given by the certified rafting guides. We begin navigating this Class III river which is known for its spectacular landscape. The adventure takes about 4 hours.
Jatunyacu River offers easy rapids, but a guaranteed wet adventure! None of the rafting excursions requires experience. Box lunch included. Accommodation: Jungle Lodge. Day 14 - Hiking in the Rain Forest The excursion to different waterfalls is an adventurous hiking activity. The tour goes through primary Amazon rainforest and various waterfalls. An expert local guide will lead the way and take advantage of any opportunity to teach us about the wildlife and nature we encounter. We will surely come across many interesting plants with poisonous or medicinal properties. After arriving at the final waterfall, we will take a break and enjoy a boxed lunch. This is a place where you can take a dip under the waterfall. Depending on the amount of rainfall, the waterfalls can be powerful and some parts of the trail will be quite tough. Accommodation: Jungle Lodge.
Day 15: Return to Quito After breakfast, you will head back to Quito. Halfway through the drive, there is an optional visit to the Papallacta Hot Springs (entrance fee not included). From here we will continue to Quito for O/N. Accommodation: Hostal El Vagabundo (1 night, box lunch and dinner) Day 16: Flight to Galapagos You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the airport (time to be confirmed locally) in order to take your flight to Galapagos. Tame flight EQ 191 departing at 8:50 a.m., arriving at 9:20 a.m. (please note this flight stops in Guayaquil, no need to change planes). Transfer from Baltra Airport to Pto Ayora Sta Cruz. Speed boat to Isabela Island (2 hours approximately).
Day 16-21: Isabela Island. Package 6d/5n Day 1.- Transfer from Baltra Airport to Port of Puerto Ayora with Lunch included in Santa Cruz Speedboat to Isabela Transfer from Port of Puerto Villamil to the Hotel in Isabela Island Dinner in a Local Restaurant and Lodging at Hotel Insular. Day 2.- Visit to Flamingos Lagoon and Tortoise Breeding Center Lunch in a Local Restaurant Snorkeling Excursion to Concha Perla with the Equipment Dinner in a Local Restaurant and Lodging at Hotel Insular
Day 3.- Excursion to Sierra Negra & Chico Volcanoes Box Lunch Dinner in a Local Restaurant and Lodging at Hotel Insular Day 4.- Excursion to Sucre's Cave & Mango Viewpoint Lunch in a Local Restaurant Visit to the Wall of Tears Dinner in a Local Restaurant and Lodging at Hotel Insular Day 5.- Excursion to Tintoreras Island & Lobería Lunch in a Local Restaurant Free Afternoon for Surfing** (Including guide & Instructor) Dinner in a Local Restaurant and Lodging at Hotel Insular
