Executive Summary This report provides the second performance indicators from the Moffat Centre in provision of the Scottish Accommodation Occupancy survey. The process of transition of systems and data from previous suppliers continues and we have worked extensively to build relationships with accommodation providers in urban, rural, highland and island destinations. The primary target for the Moffat Centre remains to increase response rate and survey buy in from commercial serviced accommodation stock in the urban centres of Edinburgh, Glasgow. The level of representation outside of the major cities is strong with good samples evident in rural, coastal, island and highland regions. In terms of tourism performance to date (April to June 2017), the results shows improving performance as a direct result of the improved value proposition of Scottish tourism as pressure on UK Sterling provides a 'good value' proposition to key European, US and other International markets. Furthermore, domestic visitation appears strong as 'staycation' appeal is extended by the weaker buying power of UK Sterling overseas. The urban centres of Edinburgh and Glasgow have enjoyed buoyant occupancy and strong rates achieved. Beyond the major cities; the rural, highland, island and coastal sectors, also evidence growth with businesses benefiting from Easter falling in April. The increased presence of South East Asian and South Asian tourists has been commented on with increases in tour groups and independent tourists from these important generating markets. This coupled with positive European and US levels of visitation has helped drive demand for Scottish accommodation across many sectors. Edinburgh, Inverness and Skye all have shown very healthy levels of demand and prospects for the next quarter (July - September), which remain positive as macro-economic conditions and the uncertainty of Brexit continues to keep pressure on UK currency. Prof J John Lennon Director of Moffat Centre Director of Research Development and Management Glasgow Caledonian University 3

Overview As part of the ongoing Scottish Accommodation Occupancy Survey (SAOS) contract, The Moffat Centre, commissioned by VisitScotland, is continuing to produce monthly and quarterly outputs. This second quarterly report for 2017 forms part of the agreed outputs. Promotion of the Scottish Accommodation Occupancy Survey Promotion of the SAOS continued into the second quarter of 2017, with the support of the Client, VisitScotland. Formal presentations to the Greater Glasgow Hotels Association, Perthshire Tourism Partnership as well as a number of industry groups have been undertaken by the Moffat Centre team. In addition the Survey has been promoted informally through the Moffat Centre s consultancy work and at a number of tourism networking events, which have proved useful in increasing participation in the research. Further presentations to Regional VisitScotland offices and City Marketing Groups will follow in subsequent months. VisitScotland continue to supply the Moffat Centre will industry contacts as a means of increasing awareness of the SAOS. In addition the Client continues to promote the Survey both formally and informally to industry. Participation in the SAOS continues to increase. Full details of participation in the second quarter of 2017 can be found in the following section of this report. 4
