A NOTE FROM CHRIS HECTOR Why should we be so excited about the next WEG? Because it is only the second World Equestrian Games to be held in a state-of-the-art purpose built equestrian centre (the other, of course, was Aachen, and we know how fantastic that was...) The Equestrian Centre at Tryon has already hosted top level dressage, showjumping and eventing (course designed by Captain Mark Phillips) and it should be the perfect venue... But! There's always a 'but' - accommodation in area is almost impossible to find. But Kerrie O'Dea from our travel partners, Organisation Unlimited, loves a challenge, and she has found the perfect resort / hotel just half an hour from the venue, and has secured every room for our tour group. Destination Overview North Carolina North Carolina is a treasure chest of historical towns, battlefields, and folksy mountain hamlets. But it s also one of the American south s most forward-thinking states, with modern cities like Charlotte and plenty of brain power in the Research Triangle towns of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The great thing about North Carolina is that it offers a taste of everything for travelers. Its east coast is lined with quiet beautiful beaches along the Outer Banks, while the western side of the state is nothing but rolling Appalachian Mountains and old-timey towns. In between, the relatively flat Piedmont region is a golfer s mecca and home to the state s main cities of note. Typically, quirkiness is regarded as intangible, but in Tryon s case it is palpable. The friendly, offbeat personality is a big part of what makes Tryon special. This is a town of unexpected nooks teeming with a cast of characters that even Garrison Keillor would have had trouble imagining. In September as the Fall commences the Parkway becomes a sea of colour with the rich Autumn tones and is one of the best months to visit the Parkway. Today, with WEG on a rest day we will explore the Parkway and stop for lunch as a very scenic location!
