Marseille: a city open to the world! Nestled between sea and hills, Marseille is an amazing city that moves with the seasons and passions. Nobody can resist its unique charms! Founded 2600 years ago, Marseille is one of the oldest city in France, that combines the richness of a unique heritage, an intense cultural life, and an exceptional location. Here, life is easy going: easy to live, easy to like, and there are lots of discoveries and activities to do Marseille is a city like nowhere else in France or even in the world! The city is as affectionate as rebellious. Its contradictions makes it very interesting to live in The town hold lots of advantages: sea, sun, nature, culture, sports etc. Despite its status as second largest city of France, Marseille stay welcoming and with an easy access to the ones who want to discover her. With over 300 days of sunshine per year, the summer starts early in Marseille. The Mistral a dry and cold wind- blows 90 days per year. The mean temperature is : Spring: 19 C Summer: 25 C Autumn: 14 C Winter: 12 C. Marseille, by its history and location, has always been the doorway to north Mediterranean space. Theres is a lot of immigration and multiculturalism, especially from French former African colonies. This caused the city to make some space for foreign cultures, but communities get along well with each others. 3
As a port city open to the world, Marseille is multicultural. Each year it welcomes people who wants to live, study or visit. In 2013, Marseille was designed as the European Capital of Culture, but even before that date it already hold lots of cultural events, festivals (musical, dance ), sports events etc. There is also lots of museums with exhibitions about arts, society, culture, history from Prehistoric to Contemporary. And do not forget the architecture from traditional to modern (Notre-Dame de la Garde, Saint-Jean and Saint-Nicolas forts in the Old Port, the Panier district, the Cité radieuse du Corbusier ), Les Calanques, a natural treasure to Marseille and the Provencal traditions (from the food tapenades, pastis to the dances passing by the Santons, or a traditional game: la pétanque! Last but not least: you ll see sunset lights like this! 4
How to reach Marseille By Airport: The nearest airport is Aéroport Marseille-Provence (MRS), which is directly connected to St-Charles central train station by an airport shuttle service. The shuttle website: http://www.marseille-airport.com/access-car-parks/access/shuttle-buses/marseille Every day, up to every 15 min - Duration: 25 min By Train: The St-Charles central train station is the main train station of Marseille. Pick-Up Place and Time: The volunteers will be picked up from the main train station (Gare St. Charles) and bus station. We will confirm the exact meeting point and time once we have the travel data. 5
Eurocircle Created in 1993 in Berlin, Eurocircle is an European NGO since 2006. It developped and realized transnational projects, especially in international mobility for young people. The aim is to foster the emergence of an intercultural European citizenship, based on values of tolerance, equality, peace, ecology and solidarity. 6
Your Hosting Organisation LES PETITS DEBROUILLARDS Les petits débrouillards is network of organizations implanted in 21 countries which aims to promote scientific culture for youngsters. Les petits débrouillards PACA is the French branch, founded in 1999, and operates in south east of France. They organize scientific and technical activities for youngsters and bring their expertise and experience for public debates on education and culture. Their goal is to form active citizens, able to take active participation in building our future world. Their actions towards youth is guided by values in principles such as popular education, free access to culture and knowledge, and aim to: - Introduce youngster to science through recreational activities - Stimulate their desire for comprehension - Initiate them to scientific method, truth-seeking process, curiosity and initiative - Developing sense of solidarity, respect and sharing They also organize workshops on scientific mediation, conception of pedagogic tools dedicated to specific audiences, festivals, seminars, They have good experience in hosting European volunteers, organizing their arrival and stay, supporting and integrating them. They also work with Eurocircle, another organization specialized in European and international mobility. Accomodation During your stay, you ll be in a shared appartment with up to four others volunteers and/or students. The flat is located in the city center of Marseille near the main train station (99, rue de Crimée, 13003 Marseille). You will have your own bedroom with a bed (plus bed linen, a pillow and a blanket), bedside table, lamp, a table and a chair. Kitchen is also fully equipped (microwave, oven, gaz, fridge, pans, glasses, plates ). 8
Informations Weather Weather in Marseille is quite pleasant, winter is soft, mid season last long but summer can be hot as hell!!! The Mistral will blow so think especially about bringing wind stopper clothes and if you feel like taking a bath in the Mediterranean Sea, eventually a swimsuit! Shops In France, shops (with some exception for example: Les Terrasses du Port in Marseille) are close on Sundays and during bank holidays. The opening and closing times is habitually from 9am to 7pm. Public transportation In Marseille, you will find subways, trams, buses and renting bikes (the four of them from the same service). If you want to travel outside of Marseille, there are also buses and train who serves well the others towns. Your local transport as well as the transport inherent to the missions will be paid. Indeed, the volunteer will get a RTM ticket (public transports). Food The monthly allowance will be divided as following: he will get 210 a month for the food (to buy and cook himself). He will also get 150 a month as pocket money. Note that we ask 150 as a caution for the flat (that he will get back at his departure). 9
