Event Venue 2017 Being an integral part of Philadelphia s Holiday District a marketing initiative started by the the Christmas Village organizers in co-operation with Macy s Center City in 2014 Christmas Village returns to its successful home at Love Park C h r i s t m a s V i l l a g e i n P h i l a d e l p h i a 4
History Timeline Christmas Village in Philadelphia 2008 For the first time, Christmas Village in Philadelphia takes place at Dilworth Plaza, right next to the City Hall. 2009 Christmas Village gains ground in Philadelphia new partners are won and attendance numbers climb to 200,000. 2010 As a new highlight, Christmas Village is opened by the German Christkind from Nuremberg within a ceremony. The 300,000 visitors enjoy the growing variety of vendors. 2011 2012-2015 2016 Due to construction work, Christmas Village moves to LOVE Park. Initial concerns which came along with the new venue, turned into a great success over 400,000 visitors and 53 vendors love the new location. Christmas Village in Philadelphia keeps growing year by year becomes an inherent part of Philadelphian s Holiday traditions. The event also gains international recognition, from 2013 on it has been included within Fodors Top 10 list of the world s 10 best Holiday markets. Due to construction work at LOVE Park, Christmas Village finds a new temporary home in the Courtyard of City Hall and at the landmarks North-West apron. Event Overview 2016 Attendance Location 750,000 visitors With LOVE Park being under construction, City Hall was the perfect temporary location for 2016. With Christmas Village being located at the landmarks Courtyard as well as the north-west apron and the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market on the West side right next to the Rothman Ice Rink, the event was the focal point of Philadelphia s Holiday District. Impressions Christmas Village in Philadelphia
Highlights 2016 With City Hall as it s new temporary home, Christmas Village moved back to its roots. With a completely new layout and a couple added wooden booths, the event got a new look and feel in 2016. Nested into Philadelphia s historic City Hall and with a new centerpiece a historic carousel inside the Courtyard visitors and vendors loved the new venue. The carousel was open and running at all times the market was busy from dusk till dawn. Next to great highlight events, the newly introduced HoHoHappy Hour drew in a good crowd on Wednesday evenings. The event was held in co-operation with a couple of the event s vendors and featured live music and a seating area. C h r i s t m a s V i l l a g e i n P h i l a d e l p h i a 9
Atmosphere Christmas Village s booths popped up at City Hall s Courtyard as well as along the North-West apron of the landmark. Thus, the event has been nestled perfectly into its historic background. As in previous years, the event organizers set up extensive Holiday lights to light up the event, which went perfectly with City Hall as its backdrop. Most prominently, a Herrnhut Star topped every second booth. The Carousel in the middle of City Hall s Courtyard was the centerpiece of 2016 s event. The beautiful historic carousel has been loved by kids and visitors of all ages as well as by the local press. C h r i s t m a s V i l l a g e i n P h i l a d e l p h i a 10
Events and Entertainment The Christmas Village organizers brought back the crowds favorite weekend events in 2016. The event was kicked off within the traditional Grand Opening Ceremony with the original German Christkind from Nuremberg, who spoke her opening prologue from one of the windows of City Hall. Followed by crowd pulling events such as the German American Weekend, Christmas Village had busy weekends during the season 2016. To strengthen weekdays, the HoHoHappy Hour has been introduced in 2016. The Happy Hour concept, which took place every Wednesday under a different motto, included discounts at various vendors, live music and a pop-up seating area. The remaining weekdays were filled with live performances by local artists, kids days, and much more. C h r i s t m a s V i l l a g e i n P h i l a d e l p h i a 11
Gift Vendors In it s 9 th season, Christmas Village added great vendors to the shopping portfolio! New vendors included Steiff plush animals from Germany, the New York Puzzle Company, the Beef Jerky Hut and a couple more. Crowd favorites from past years like the Herrnhut Star vendor, the Christmas Tree stand and many more returned once again to Christmas Village to offer their arts and crafts, jewelry, Holiday decorations and gifts to the crowds. Käthe Wohlfahrt s Winter Wonderland inside the heated tent was located at the North side of City Hall, selling all kinds of authentic German Christmas ornaments, Schwibbogen, Incent Smokers, Pyramids and more. Food and Beverages Christmas Village is a MUST DO for all food lovers! The event featured a large variety of European inspired dishes such as Bratwurst, Schnitzel, Strudels, and Pretzels. Next to these rather traditional choices, our chefs brought back the beloved Berlin Döner as well as fresh made Belgian Fries, backed cheese from Wisconsin, and much more. With a large selection of sweet options, which included fresh waffles and crepes, various confections and hard candies as well as Gingerbread and fresh roasted almonds, visitors with a sweet tooth didn t go home hungry. Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market Running in it s 2 nd year, the Made in Philadelphia Holiday market took place at City Hall s West side. Framed by Christmas Village as well as the Rothman Ice Rink and the newly established America s Garden Capital Maze, the market fit perfectly into the Holiday festivities around City Hall. True to it s name, the event featured exclusively arts and craftsmen who are based in Philadelphia offering all kinds of Holiday decoration and gifts, fashion, handmade delicacies and much more.
