This edition of LiveLink includes the latest trends in Australian live export trade statistics and prices. Please note that all export data over the past nine months may later be revised. Feeder and slaughter cattle exports in declined 40 from the previous month, totalling 35,556. Lower availability of Australian cattle and higher cattle prices continue to provide challenges to live cattle export markets. Since the last edition of LiveLink, there has been further government policy s in Indonesia, with the most significant being the increase in the maximum average weight for feeder cattle and feeder buffalo, from 350kg to 450kg. The ruling, effective as of 21 2017, will allow Australian exporters a greater level of flexibility in sourcing stock to ship to Indonesia. The 1:5 breeder-to-feeder ratio still applies and will be implemented in a phased manner, with the first audit to be conducted in December 2018. Breeder numbers to Indonesia moved noticeably higher in, reaching 1,185. BULOG looks likely to bring in the remainder of the initial 110,000 tonne Indian buffalo meat import permit allocation in the lead up to Ramadhan which occurs in May (50,000 tonnes of permits are yet to be realised). Current wet market prices for Indian buffalo meat in the Greater Jakarta vary widely and range from IDR 57,000-105,000/kg, with fresh beef prices trading at a premium from IDR 115,000-120,000/kg. Vietnam feeder and slaughter numbers dropped in, to just 3,144 - albeit coming off a higher base following the lunar New Year which occurred at the end of January. Beef consumption in Vietnam usually drifts lower through the summer and importer demand continues to be challenged by current prices. The most recent month and, at times, second most recent month trade data comes from DAWR. This data is then updated when ABS data is released. * In October 2015, the ABS did not disclose feeder and slaughter cattle trade data to Vietnam, China and Japan. For this month, individual country shipments have been estimated by MLA. In addition, trade data by individual port was also not disclosed in October 2015 this data is aggregated under Unknown port. ** DAWR does not report on individual ports. Port data is updated when released by the ABS. All pricing data is collected by Meat and Livestock Australia from a range of sources. Sheep exports for totalled 167,782, an almost three-fold increase from the previous month. With Ramadan approaching in May, there is a move from importers to ensure product arrives in time for the religious festival. Also, improved conditions seen across most of Western Australia have seen yardings increase, as farmers look to utilise the land for cropping. Want to subscribe to the monthly LiveLink report?
