From the Directors Desk OK, Space Coast Harley Owners Group, let's show Central Florida we know how to conduct a "Fund Raiser" that will not be soon be forgotten. August is here and a lot of work and planning is still to be done before our event scheduled for September 22nd. Our Committee Chairman and his "CREW" have spent many hours of planning to ensure our Key Note will be the best yet! Any Chapter Member can assist by selling tickets, placing flyers in various locations within the county (and surrounding), by asking business's for donations for basket's, basket items, or any item that can be auctioned. August is going to be an exciting month for our Chapter. Some great rides are scheduled, plus our Dealer has scheduled a couple of events to take place at the Dealership. The first one is scheduled for Saturday, August 4, taking place from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., which will be "Customer Appreciation Day". On Saturday, August 25, from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., our Dealer will be hosting the first annual "Dealership Anniversary Celebration". No rides are scheduled for both events, so let's show up in force and show our appreciation to the Dealership, as he has shown his 100% support for our Chapter. Several members have returned from their journey of exciting adventures. Hopefully, we will be reading about them in the Newsletter. We would appreciate articles from any member concerning rides, whether it is a group, solo, lunch/dinner ride or any adventure. Quote from James Garfield --"If wrinkles must be written upon our brows, let them not be written upon the heart. The spirit should never grow old". Also just a quick reminder, that all local HOG members must present their HOG membership card when making a purchase to receive their 10% discount. We have a new policy that all HOG rides will begin at Space Coast Harley Davidson Dealership. Remember our troops, and God Bless the USA Onnie

The Black Sunglasses Tour As some of you may know I took the opportunity to return from the Rolling Thunder/Ground Zero ride by way of a Diners, Drive Ins, & Dives tour. Since that name belongs to Food Network I m calling mine the Black Sunglasses Tour. For this, the first installment, I d like to tell you about a person, not a place. On the ride from Tucker, GA. (Matthews Diner) to Valdosta, Ga. (The Smokin Pig) I rode in a deluge. My rain gear was excellent but I still got a collar drip and was simply worn out as I approached Macon, GA. The prospect of coffee, a dry shirt and a Harley lounge sounded good so I made for Harley of Macon. I was looking for a shirt when I heard a voice ask what part of Florida I was from. (I was wearing our chapter shirt, a great out of town conversation starter). I turned to be greeted by a broad smile and a STRONG handshake. He introduced himself as Grover Sassaman, the owner. He then went on to tell stories about his life with Harley, during which he dropped in that he is over 90 years old, and the oldest living continuous Harley dealer in the country. He started Lakeland HD (selling Harleys and Schwinn bicycles) at the request of Arthur Davidson, one of the founders. He worked with Charles Lindburgh, getting aircraft ready for war and is a decorated Marine, wounded at Luzon in the Pacific theater. As a boy in Michigan he rode all year. Since there was no foul weather gear he stuffed his suit with newspaper and pulled an oil cloth over his head. One day he pulled into a gas station and the alarm was raised because they thought they were being robbed by the masked man. He was factory trained in 39 and raced on the beaches of Daytona. His stories are many, his photos decorate the walls of the dealership, and his charm and warmth cannot be conveyed in a short article. I hope and plan to return for more time with him. I strongly suggest going to You Tube and typing in Grover-The Video to spend a short time with this wealth of knowledge and history.
The Safety Corner Should I join that group of riders? The group of motorcyclists you are considering to join have more in common than that they happen to be riding together at the moment. Their history as a group may be no more than an hour old, but it exists. They could, for example, have just met each other for the first time at a dealership and are participating in a dealer sponsored ride of some kind. They could all be members of an organization such as HOG - or the Hells Angels. Whatever their history, and for however long it has existed, they have more in common than that they happen to be riding together. As an 'outsider' you might be welcome to join them or NOT. Besides the obvious facts that the group is riding together, that it has a destination, and that there is some (however brief) history that they share with each other, there remain some other realities that you should realize at this point: The group may have one or more members in it who is (are) drunk or drugged. The group may be out looking for trouble. The group may just have experienced trouble with someone else trying to join them, uninvited or otherwise. The group, despite appearances, may have no idea whatever how to ride safely as a group. Thus, it makes very little sense to join an unfamiliar group, even if you do manage to make contact with them. But if that is what you would like to do, consider doing it as follows: Try to make radio contact with them if you can and ask where they are going. If it becomes clear that you would be welcome to join them, next find out where they plan to make their next stop. Using the radio, tell your contact that you would like to join them at that stop and will follow along until you all get there. Tag along behind the group, but NOT in formation. Stay behind their last bike with a distance at least THREE TIMES what the group is using. This, because most groups place special significance to the drag bike position and that rider has unique responsibilities (such as securing lanes.) In other words, follow the group to their next stop without actually joining them. If you are unable to make radio contact with the group then you have no alternative but to attempt to join them at their next stop, wherever that happens to be. Do NOT join the group uninvited!!!!! Since the group has not yet made it clear that they are willing to have you join them you should not tag along as closely as described above. In this case you must not appear to the group or to others as if you are part of the group and just lagging a bit. Ride in a different lane if you can. Let a car or two get between you and the group. If there is only the group and you on the road, follow with at least FIVE TIMES the gap that is being used by the group between its members. At the first stop is when you introduce yourself to the group. Park your motorcycle somewhere in sight of the others, but NOT as if you are already a part of the group. Make your approach to the first member of the group that appears willing to engage you. If there is a pecking order in the group and someone else decides whether or not someone can join them (almost always true), you will be told about it. In conversation find out about the group, its 'rules of the ride', and keep a careful eye out for signs of drugs or alcohol. Then, have a good time, don't press your skill level to 'keep up', accept your prime directive ('NEVER HIT THE BIKE IN FRONT OF YOU'), and make some good friends.
Spacecoast Harley Davidson Service Hours Monday through Friday 8 AM 7 AM Saturday: 8 AM - 6 PM Sunday: 10 AM - 4 PM? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS????? Do I have to make an appointment for service? A. Yes, we utilize an appointment system to ensure the allotted time available for your service.? How much time in advance should I schedule my service? A. Normally 3-4 days, but there are exceptions.? How often should I service my Harley-Davidson /Buell motorcycle? A. We recommend every 2,500 miles (engine oil and filter) and a major service every 5,000 miles.? What is that scraping and rubbing noise I hear when I ride? A. That is a normal sound! The noise is your brake pads in contact with the rotors and the high metal content in the pads.? Are light bulbs covered under warrantee? A. Yes, but some items such as oil, filters, battery maintenance, tune-ups, fuel system and cleaning, are not covered. See Service Writer for details.? How long will I be without my bike? A. For most services, our goal is to have your bike done on the same day as your appointment. In some instances, it may take a little longer if we have to special order parts.? Do you perform collision repairs? A. Yes, we perform collision repairs from minor items to major repairs, such as replacing frames.? What can I do to give better information about my bike's symptoms? A. Be a good detective. Does the problem occur when you start it, or when it is warmed up? Does it get better or worse as time goes on? How long has it been happening? Does this coincide with any other problems, parts change, or maintenance?
