Camp Falling Rock 2018 Boy Scout Resident Camp Program Guide The 2018 camping season is finally among us! To help you prepare for adventure at Camp Falling Rock please use this guide, as well as the prerequisite guide, in order to be fully aware of the many amazing programs being offered to you. Some highlights include a revamped First Year Program, the return of the Cowboy Action Shoot, and the introduction of a new Mountain Biking Program. MOSTLY OPEN PROGRAM Most of our merit badge offerings are done in an open schedule format. Scouts can plan their own schedules and work at their own pace for these merit badges, creating a less stressful and deadline demanding environment. This also allows Scouts who complete merit badges mid-week to earn more as wanted or needed. A few of our classes have a more rigid schedule due to resources and safety needs (Aquatics, Climbing, Labs, and Shooting Sports). And a few have a mixture of open and set schedule due to time sensitive materials though still promoting flexibility. ADULT LEADER PROGRAMS The Scouts are not the only ones allowed to have fun! We offer many things for the adults too! Trainings include Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Climb On Safely, and other offerings. Adults are also encouraged to participate in all of our Scout programs as long as it doesn't interfere with the Scouts experience.

AQUATICS In Ohio, the temperature can jump from 100 F to 20 F in the span of a week. So it s nice to hop in the water any chance you get! Camp Falling Rock offers a wide variety of waterborne enjoyment! Our well-trained aquatics staff is here to help everyone from just learning to someone trying for their Mile Swim. Per BSA guidelines Aquatics programs will be halted or shut down in the event of severe weather. POOL SCHEDULE Lifesaving MB: 9:00 10:30 and 10:30 12:00 each day Swimming MB: 9:00 10:00, 10:00 11:00, and 2:00 3:00 each day Instructional Swim: 2:00 3:00 each day BSA Snorkel: 2:00 3:00 each day BSA Lifeguard Certification: 9:00 12:00 and 2:00 5:00 each day Open Swim: 3:00 5:00 each day, additional times may be announced Scuba: Details will be provided LAKEFRONT SCHEDULE Canoeing MB: 9:00 10:00 and 10:00 11:00 each day Kayaking MB: 9:00 10:00 and 10:00 11:00 each day Rowing MB: 11:00 12:00 each day Motorboating MB: 11:00 12:00 each day Stand-Up Paddleboarding: 3:00 4:00 each day except Thursday Open boating: 3:00 5:00 each day except Thursday Canoe Trip**: See Special Programs

CFR LABS STEM PROGRAM CFR Labs is one of our more popular areas of camp, offering many merit badges not normally associated with a camp setting. Many merit badges are offered in an open format with a few of the more challenging options kept in a more structured format. Note that badges marked with * require a current Cyber Chip and cannot be taught without one. Chess Digital Technology* Electricity Electronics Energy Game Design Inventing Movie Making Photography Salesmanship Space Exploration Scheduled Merit Badges: Robotics: 9:00 10:00 each day Chemistry: 10:00 11:00 and 3:00 4:00 each day Nuclear Science: 11:00 12:00 and 4:00 5:00 each day Programming*: 2:00 3:00 each day CLIMBING Camp Falling Rock is fortunate to have both a 40-foot climbing/rappelling tower and a 45-foot-high section of natural cliff area. The tower will be open from 9 11am and 2 4pm each day for merit badge work and open climb from 11am 12pm and 4 5pm each day except Thursday. Our cliff will be open for climbing and rappelling on Thursday during all program hours. Per BSA guidelines Climbing programs will be halted or shut down in the event of severe weather. Climbing merit badge is limited to Scouts First Class OR at least 14 years old. Open climb and rappelling at the cliffs is open to all Scouts. Scouts are NOT allowed to bring personal climbing gear, but adults may use their own pending approval by the Climbing Director. A High Adventure Waiver MUST be signed by a parent/guardian and their Scoutmaster for ALL Scouts participating in ANY climbing activity

EAGLES ROOST Finally finding itself a home with four walls, Eagle s Roost will be moving to the Krebs Lodge this year. Despite the change in scenery, it will still offer the same great program as before. Eagle s Roost is open program however scheduled times may be announced by the counselors. Citizenship in the Community Citizenship in the Nation Citizenship in the World Personal Management Communications First Aid Emergency Prep. PATHWAY PROGRAM The First Year program is getting a much needed makeover here at Falling Rock. In order to better meet the needs of today s scouts we are launching the brand new Pathway Program. This program will allow youth to attend work sessions to gain requirements they need, but free them from attending sessions of advancement they don t need. While scouts are more than welcome to come to every session, it s not required anymore. This will allow any campers to both gain rank advancement and earn merit badges. Each session is 3 hours long and will focus on individual requirement types. Be on the lookout for further information.

HANDICRAFT Whether you ve got the artistic style of Michelangelo or Jackson Pollock, Handicraft is the place to be. It s an entirely open schedule here allowing any scout to start and finish their artistic process as inspiration takes them. Art Basketry Indian Lore Leatherwork Painting Pottery Textiles Woodcarving There will be opportunities to tie-dye so be sure to bring a white T-shirt to dye. Absolutely no underwear, socks or swimwear is allowed to be dyed at camp. Plain white T- shirts are usually available in the trading post. NATURE Just as nature is all around us, our merit badges here help scouts learn about occurrences and topics that surround them everyday. Boasting the widest variety of merit badges offered at camp, Nature is a completely open program. Astronomy Bird Study Dog Care Environmental Science Fish & Wildlife Management Fishing Fly Fishing Forestry Gardening Geology Insect Study Mammal Study Nature Pets Plant Science Pulp & Paper Reptile & Amphibian Study Scholarship Soil & Water Conservation Weather

SCOUTCRAFT Outdoor skills are the heart of the Scouting Program. Scoutcraft teaches you these core values through its merit badges. All Scoutcraft programs are done in an open format. Backpacking Camping Geocaching Hiking Pioneering First Aid Emergency Preparedness SHOOTING SPORTS One of the most popular areas on camp, Shooting Sports, offers a chance to hone in your archery, rifle, and shotgun skills. Program for merit badges is offered in a scheduled program format with additional open times. Open times may be limited later in the week if weather delays or extensive make-up time for merit badges is needed. Adult campers, on Monday night be sure not to miss our special Scoutmaster Black Powder Rifle Shoot! A special treat for those 18 and older, the shoot is a fun time for everyone. Various rifles from Flintlocks to modern In-lines are usually available. No experience? No problem! Staff takes care of the loading and cleaning so all you have to do is point and shoot. ARCHERY RANGE SCHEDULE: Archery MB: 9:00 10:00, 10:00 11:00, 11:00 12:00, 2:00 3:00 each day Open Archery: 3:00 5:00 each day RIFLE RANGE SCHEDULE: Rifle MB: 9:00 10:00, 10:00 11:00, 11:00 12:00 each day Open Rifle: 2:00 4:00 each day Shotgun merit badge: 4:00 5:00 each day

WOODSMAN PROGRAM This exciting program is more than just wilderness survival, it is wilderness LIVING! Based upon Appalachian living skills and ways of a simpler lifestyle, the Woodsman program prepares Scouts for longer stays in the woodlands and to be more comfortable doing it. New this year, Woodsman will be offering a second level program that will include some overnights in the program area. Wilderness Survival merit badge will be offered during the hours of 11:00 am to Noon and 4:00 to 5:00 pm each day. SPECIAL PROGRAMS Rock Hops Canoe Trip - Back again this year the canoe trip is a fun 4 mile trip starting at Ohio 668. This then continues to Blackhand Gorge ending at Toboso Road. The trip will be Thursday after lunch and will last about 3 hours. It will be $10 to sign up and there are only 10 spaces available. This will be a first come first serve basis, to sign up you MUST be at least 14 years of age, MUST be a swimmer, have a high adventure waiver signed, and a Scoutmaster must be present at the time of purchase at the Trading Post. Cowboy Action Shoot - Grab your spurs, Stetsons, and best pair of chaps. The Cowboy Action Shoot is making its return this year to Camp Falling Rock. On Thursday evenings scouts will have the opportunity to shoot a.22-caliber revolver, lever action.22-caliber rifle and 12-gauge double barrel shotgun. Due to BSA regulations scouts must have a signed permission slip before participating. This permission slip and a scoutmaster must be present to buy the $15 ticket. Mountain Biking - New to Falling Rock this year is the addition of a biking program. This will take place during scheduled times through the week and focus on bike safety, etiquette, maintenance, and there will be group trail rides.
